Sorry, but I'm not persuaded. Why some signs are not mentioned? It is possible that a few significations were simply missing from the text, or weren't in the manuscript tradition that Pingree edited for this chapter of Hephaistio. Enough of them are preserved that there is a pretty clear pattern th... Thanks for the quote <3 Anyway Gemini is MASCULINE in Hephaistio (page 7) According the hemisphere's logic it should be feminine too. Margherita Not if sect and gender are being treated as separate concepts within the context of that approach. That Hephaistio seems to be treating them as separate s... Ptolemy says the same. Don't blame him :) "The system of houses is of the following nature. Since of the twelve signs the most northern, which are closer than the others to our zenith and therefore most productive of heat and of warmth are Cancer and Leo, they assigned these to the greatest an... About Hephaistio, about whom Schmidt says it is a paraphrase of Tetrabiblos with excerpts from Dorotheus (page viii of Hephaistio first book, Hindsight edition) it would be nice to have the quote. It is in book 1, chapter 1 of Hephaistio, where he outlines the significations of the signs of the zod... The confusion probably arises because there was some sort of debate in the early Hellenistic tradition about how to assign some of the sect-related rejoicing conditions to the signs. Everyone agreed about the basic distinction between day charts and night charts and the two teams, and they also seem... Yeah, that is probably the most we can say really either way. I know sometimes in the past that I've overlooked important textual issues that could push the interpretation in one way or another, so I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something glaring that I was overlooking here. Thanks for... Forum: Traditional (& Ancient) Techniques Topic: Date of a Balbillus nativity Replies: 4 Views: 4594 Sat Oct 28, 2017 7:16 pm Jump to post
This is only tangentially related to this thread, but I was having a discussion with someone the other day that involved the two Balbilus charts, and I was wondering what your thoughts are about the dating issue on the second chart, Martin? The issue is basically that in what Neugebauer and van Hoes... The key texts are basically Medieval-era Sanskrit astronomical and philosophical works that have been influenced by Greco-Roman astronomy essentially, right? That would be the main counterpoint to the textual argument? To me that seemed like the strongest counterargument that one could make at least... Just about all of the Hellenistic astrologers switched to quadrant houses when trying to find the predominator for the length of life technique, I think because this is how it was done in the Petosiris text that originally outlined the technique. So, if you are following Valens' system for finding t... The distinction is that the predominator becomes the apheta when you want to "release" it from its fixed position and allow it to move through the chart using primary directions. So it is like describing the action of what you do with the predominator once you've found it. I'm not completely familiar with it, but it seems that "whole sign houses" implies slight changes to the chart's graphics. For instance, House 1 is not the Ascendant, and the Asc/MC are new objects than need to be "inserted" in the chart. However, I may try to implement it! I've...
