Help a newbie?

Hi. I know a fair amount of natal/evolutionary astrology and recently had a major source of confusion enter my life. Someone suggested I do a horary chart instead. I'm a bit shaky on how to read them though.

The basic situation is this. Virgo/Aries rising/Pisces moon. in november I rekindled a friendship with a friend from college. We were never that close, but in recent months we bagan talking every night for hours. He came to visit me (Capricorn, aquarius moon and rising 12th house sun and merc). Everything went wonderfully, he was affectionate, romantic, cuddly (pisces venus). We survived an avalanche. All was great. Friday I took him to the airport and I told him I'd be sad if this came to an end. He said we could try and make it work. But since then our contact is much more sporadic. I'm worried (stellium virgo). I'd like to know if this is working. So I asked "what is going on with he and I."

I know I'm mercury and I think he's jupiter. If anyone wants to help me walk through this, I'd appreciate it. I don't want a freebie reading...it's better for me if I understand the "why's" so perhaps some coaching and prompting?

Since you asked so nice. What I sense that you are asking is if this relationship is going anywhere. Questions like "What's going on with he and I" are probably answerable, but we already know you're apart and you want to see if this can work. So, "Will you get together again" seems to be the more logical question.

You are the querent, so you are Mercury and the Moon. You are inquiring about a lover and so he is the 7th house ruler. Sagittarius is on the cusp so he is Jupiter.

For the record, and this is not required by any means, most horary astrologers use Regiomontanus house cusps. You used Placidus, so I did. Deb will tell you that it is more important that you choose a house system and use it consistently than it is to follow the pack.

Next, and this bit of advice is purely personal opinion and may be worth only what you paid for it. I suggest casting a chart without the clutter, and by clutter I mean aspect lines, asteroids, Chiron etc. The best way to learn, in my often less than humble opinion, is to set your computer to cast a chart that has the 7 classical planets, the part of fortune and the nodes, with no aspect lines at all. It makes things easier to see. Once you get used to horary, add the outer planets if you wish, but the rest of the stuff has no real use in horary. I know this chart came from an online resource and you may have no choice in the matter, but if you do, try to dispense with the extras.

OK off the soapbox. If you want to know if you are going to reunite, you look for an applying aspect between Mercury and Jupiter. Failing that, look to see if the Moon and Jupiter are about to make an aspect BEFORE any other planet makes an aspect to either planet. Then note the type of aspect. Roughly it runs this way:

Conjunction: you'll get together
Sextile or trine: you'll get together easily
square: you'll get together but with delay or difficulty

Opposition: you'll get together but maybe you'll wish you hadn't.

Now some people will argue that this chart isn't radical, i.e. cannot be judged as more than 27 degrees of a sign are rising. I'm not one of those, but even if I were, you said you wanted to walk through this. Those who would not judge would argue that the late degrees rising indicate it is too late to effect the outcome.

So is there an applying aspect between Mercury and Jupiter?

No. There is an aspect but it is mutually separating. Jupiter is retrograde in Scorpio and Mercury is direct in Pisces. Will this change before one planet or another leaves its sign? No, Mercury recently just turned direct. Since the aspect is separating, it shows something that has happened. and you told us he recently left. This coupled with the late degrees rising indicate a reunion isn't too promising.

William Lilly, in matters such as this, used to give the woman Venus, and the Man, the Sun in addition to the usual significators. Venus represents the woman as woman or feminine being and the Sun the masculine counterpart. Venus' next aspect will be a trine to Jupiter. They are mutually applying since Jupiter is retrograde.

However, the Moon will oppose the Sun first, and although it indicates a rekindling of the relationship, it may not be what you hope for. Try to put this together in a context that makes sense to you. WIll there be a disagreement first (Moon opposite Sun), then a reunion (Venus trine Jupiter)? Are there potential plans you haven't mentioned in your post?

These are the general principles, there is probably more in the chart. Mars so close to the ASC is interesting. Mars rules 11, so I wonder if there is a friend involved in this somehow or perhaps Mars indicates something else? If so Mars is about to change signs, indicating a change in Mars' attitude. Is Mars a different boyfriend?

You can see that the idea is to bring the appropriate planets together. If they cannot be brought together, the thing inquired about will not happen If they can the thing will happen. Work with the chart a bit, and if you have any questions, ask. If anyone else wants to pounce on what I may have missed, feel free.

Thank you, this is all quite interesting. He did call me last night, but only briefly. He seemed very distracted...lots of deadlines with his writing. I did leave out a few things...with my career, this, if it works at all, will always be a distance relationship. the closest we'll ever be is 2 hours apart. I'm planning on visiting him in mid may if possible.

The mars issue is interesting...it also rules the sixth house. I wonder, part of what's keeping up apart is our careers. work, duty, responsibility, all sixth house issues. I'm already aware that we are both incredibly career driven and will not be giving that up. Perhaps that's the importance of mars? I'm trying not to read "wishful thinking" into this. I care for him a great deal. Do natal placements have any bearing on a horary chart? I notice mercury (my personal planet as a virgo) is trining saturn (his as a capricorn). Does this matter at all? or does natal not come into play at all?

The stuff with juno I find very interesting. Also, my progressed moon is exactly conjunct his natal moon. It's funny how we have so much more rapport and connection now than we did while in school together where we were amicable acquaintences at best. And his progressed jupiter is coming into closer conjunction with my natal sun.

Many, but not all traditional astrologers, place all work in the 10th. The traditional meaning of the 6th is servants. In contemporary society we think only rich people have servants, but we hire mechanics, and plumbers, and others to do work for us, and they would fit the 6th house. If we go back to the Greeks, the 6th is slavery, but it is the slaves (or servants) that we own (or pay). Our work, or "action" as Morinus put it, is the 10th house.

The fact that you are career driven is shown by your significator being in the 10th.
Do natal placements have any bearing on a horary chart?
Not really, although from time to time, we may see things that appear to be meaningful coincidence.

I'm still interested in Mars, all the more because it disposits Jupiter, the quesited. Anything that close to the ASC must have some significance.

I know tenth is usually "career" but sixth in modern interpretations can also involve duty, responsibility, and work in the physical sense, while the tenth is career which is work in a more abstract sense. In that sense, work is definately going to be an issue, as we both have a lot of it.

I agree mars is interesting. I am in the military and a virgo with aries rising. I'm not sure if that adds anything to the equation.
