can someone tell me where to find an horary course. I am unsure as to whether I should do a distance learning or be attending physically bthe course. The only issue is that I have full care of my boys and work full time....

I have studied previously, so as regards to being committed, i am but i need some flexibility and shared knowledge with the group

I take it you have completed the free online course here on skyscript? If you haven't do give it a go its very good.

Ok where to start! Well you expressed an interest in a face to face class. You might be interested to know John Frawley is running a weekend introductory course in Horary astrology in Oxford on August 19th and 2oth. Its part of the Faculty of Astrological Studies Summer School. I don't know if there are places left. Anyway try their website link:

Lots of astrologers run excellent Horary courses by correspondence/email etc. Here in the UK John Frawley is probably the best known. His course is considerably more expensive than most others..but John would no doubt claim thats because it is so much better! Nevertheless, there are several other very good Horary teachers who are UK based. I suggest you google their names for web details. These include Sue Ward and our very own Deb Houlding! Deb is so incredibly modest you would never guess she teaches horary from her own website! Deb runs occassional one day horary introductions. She does sometimes take students but she will need to update you on her current availability.

In the USA Christopher Warnock (details here on skyscript) and Lee Lehman run highly respected correspondence courses on horary.

I'm sure there are loads of other people teaching horary I have omitted but these names popped into my head first.

I should probably point out (before someone else does) that I?m not really modest. I don?t advertise widely because I can only offer limited places on a limited number of courses, which tend to get filled by word of mouth. There?s no point in advertising for more students than I can actually deal with.

I don?t offer a correspondence course but about twice a year I run a certificate level horary course as a 5-day intensive residential workshop. I recently returned from running one of these courses in Norway and I?ll be running another in the UK in August. All the places are filled I?m afraid but I can send you the details and the syllabus so that if you are interested you can be one of the first to receive notice of the next set of courses. I?ll contact you privately about that.

Another British correspondence course that often gets overlooked is that offered by the Company of Astrologers. See http://companyofastrologers.com/katarche.htm.

In terms of which is best it would be very difficult to pick out one course above another. Most well known horary teachers are very committed to both their students and the material that they teach; the differences are mainly that of style. There are no large schools of horary and the courses tend to be characterised by the individual who put the course together. It?s a good idea to read a few articles written by the person running the course to get a sense of their approach and whether you comfortably relate to their personal philosophy. For example, if you read the articles ?The Modern art of horary by Dennis Elwell - http://www.skyscript.co.uk/elwell1.html - and ?Horary Astrology? by John Frawley - http://www.skyscript.co.uk/Frawley.html - you can see that these two authors take a very different approach but both are excellent advocates for their approach. Also look at what the proprietor of the course is doing with their horary and consider whether that?s the way that you want to be using it too, because that?s inevitably the style that you?ll be taught to adopt.

Also, as Mark said, don?t underestimate how much you can learn for yourself by reading books on horary and studying horary texts and traditional chart judgements privately. There are some very good horary astrologers who are self-taught and the internet has made access to the necessary material far easier. Besides the introductory lessons that Mark mentioned (at http://www.skyscript.co.uk/horary_intro.html ), some of the horary articles on this site are prepared in such a way that you can test your knowledge and practice on the charts before reading the author?s own judgement. See for example the section on relationship charts at http://www.skyscript.co.uk/relationships.html and the one on missing objects at http://www.skyscript.co.uk/wit.html - both of these are good for giving beginners a chance to learn more and experiment with the techniques.
