AJ, I don't think it's about a specific event. It's more about the quality of energy or 'feeling', if that makes any sense.

In terms of waning energy one could liken it to a sandhi, the transition point between signs and houses; a short period of transition, the changing of energies. Notably considered a weak and unfortunate position.

The transiting Sun is in effect in applying orb to its natal place at solar return, so why not apply the same logic. Using a tight orb of 3-5 degrees, the few days before a return as the Sun is applying it grows stronger until exactitude; to take on/initiate the new energy.

That would explain why the time around a birthday can seem unsettled.

Hey Therese: Thanks for clarifying. I was getting off track to your response but still think a good research project would be to examine difficult events before and after the birthday to help settle this idea. I'll put it on my already way too long 'to-do' long list. LOL

Probably not for a long time yet, but I expect it'll keep. I can snatch a few minutes to check the forum most days, but not enough time for extended back-and-forths or public academic wrangles. (It's responsibilities in the private sphere that are making demands on my time right now, not work, and they take priority.)

Aimer- I am not sure if this is related to what you were asking about, but back when I was first reading about (modern Western) astrology, there was a popular book about Solar Returns by Mary Fortier Shea. I think in that book she stated that, in her experience, a solar return's influence began to have its effect about three months before the official date of that year's solar return. She was also a great fan of having her clients relocate for the solar return's date if it looked like it would make the year more advantageous (or less stressful).
