Forum upgrade planned: 11th -14th August

1
We are planning to upgrade this forum between Friday 11th and Monday 14th August. All being well, there will be minimum downtime and everything should be in place by early next week – but allow for the prospect of some inconvenience and potential server lag during this period.
This is a significant upgrade which requires a server swap, and great effort has been made to ensure that the user experience remains familiar, with all old posts retained. But the upgrade will bring a much better user experience, including better navigation, improved search facilities and the easy ability to insert charts and diagrams into posts.
One necessary change to navigation is that the whole section “Sidereal Systems & World Traditions??? is going to be merged into one forum branch headed “Sidereal Systems & World Traditions??? and this will be included within the main forum section (instead of a different section to it). I think everyone will agree that this makes more sense anyway.
The current difficulty of including charts and images has been a big barrier to me posting lately, so I am looking forward to being more active on the forum after this change.
Fingers crossed that all goes well!
Deb

Just an update: the attempted upgrade identified a couple of database problems that need to be fixed before the update goes live. That task should get completed tomorrow (Wednesday, 16 Aug), so be aware that server issues are still ongoing for the rest of this week, although mostly unlikely to affect your user experience.

Thanks! There are still a few problems to fix and a few design issues to take care of, but it's a big relief to get the main upgrade installed without breaking the rest of the site :) I think it will be another week before everything is just as it ought to be - but we are getting there.
And I can start posting chart images and diagrams easily now ... which is great!

Deb, very nice design for the renovated site. Along with many others I would guess, I'll be happy to contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the site if there is a PayPal link we can use. Skyscript is the only on-line location I know of where we can carry on polite and intelligent discussion with other astrologers.

I've run into a "404" when clicking on a link or two, but am waiting to see if these links are fixed.

Do we post charts and diagrams exactly like we did before using postimage.org?

Hi Therese,
Thanks for the encouraging note. With regard to images, I'm including an image of a screenshot which will help me explain:

At the bottom of the dialogue box (where you create a post or reply to someone else's) you get an option to link to an image hosted or created on the web. Using this, you can post charts and diagrams exactly like you did before using postimage.org. This is the option highlighted with the yellow box in the image below.

However, below that, there is an option to add a file as an attachment - shown by the green highlight box in the image. Using this, you can upload an image directly from your own computer, cutting out the need to use postimage.org or such if you already have an image that you want to share. This will automatically display at the bottom of your post, or you can position it at any particular place by attaching the image and selecting "Place inline" at the point you want to show it.
If you see any more 404 errors will you add the link here? At this point, we shouldn't be having 404 errors which indicates missing content.

There's still some integration issues in the navigation to be resolved (a few navigation links will take you to the wrong place, but most are working now).

Anything else will be resolved as it is noticed. I have also received a massive amount of notifications of new forum registrations, which seems very unnatural. so I'm trying to get to the bottom of that. If any longstanding member experiences any problem logging in and posting, please let me know, (I'm of the belief that all member accounts are working as they should be.)

With regard to donations Therese - these are very welcomed right now as this year and next I need to fund raise to ensure the site is changed into something that is easy to develop and improve in the future. We do have a PayPal donation link here. Over the next year I plan to migrate the Patreon scheme so that there are membership options that are fully housed on-site, but I need a month or two before I can fully develop the plan and activate any of that.

Hope this helps!

You might need to check or reset the setting in your user control panel. Access that at any time from the avatar image showing in the top right of the screen - if you haven't uploaded an image it will show as a grey circle with your initial in it. You can see what I mean from this screenshot, where I click on my user image to get to the user control panel.

(I'm not sure, but I think this link will take anyone to their own private User Control Panel too: https://www.skyscript.co.uk/forums/ucp.php)

Then choose BOARD PREFERENCES then EDIT NOTIFICATION OPTIONS and check you have the option selected to have notifications delivered by email, rather than a notification that alerts you when you visit the site.
