How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 1 by Dima Gur Hi everyone, I've became used to considering a planet which is up to 3 deg. distant from a house cusp to be in the next house. Example: Venus is in the 26th degree of Libra in the 11th house, while the 12th house cusp is on the 29th degree of Libra. Would you treat Venus as if placed in the 11th or the 12th? I would treat it as a 12th house Venus probably. I even sometimes extend that ruler to 4 degrees, or 5 degrees max. How about you? And if you do it, do you do it in both natal and horary? --- I don't have it in front of me now, but I'm fairly certain that Lilly and other traditional sources did the same. https://www.gurastro.com Quote Fri Sep 08, 2023 10:14 pm
Re: How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 2 by carriere.francois Hello Dima, I have learned to use orbs a different way when planets are near the cusp of the next house. I suppose you use traditional planets orbs (al-Biruni, Lilly, etc.). So, the minute the cusp touches the half-orb of the planet, I consider it working in both houses until it is effectively in the next house. Sometimes, in mundo positions are helpful. So, for instance, if the moiety of the Sun et 8°, then the Sun becomes active in the next house with a 8° orb from the cusp of that house, and is still active in the one it is actually located. Re: How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 3 by Dima Gur Francois Carriere, That's interesting. Wouldn't such an approach contribute to very large "carries its influence to the next house" orbs? Especially for the Sun and Moon, First time I hear about such a thing. Is such an approach common amongst French speaking astrologers or French traditionalists? https://www.gurastro.com Quote Mon Sep 11, 2023 8:22 pm
Re: How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 4 by carriere.francois Dima, Hard to give a clear answer. Reading texts from Denis Labouré, a French astrologer practicing traditional astrology currents, I learned that from him. Yes this rises questions for the luminaries. I suppose adjustments should be made for them, but I never experimented them (how important in degrees is a specific House?). I know the other rule is attributed to Ptolamemae with the 5° orb. However the rule is given in the context on how to find a hyleg for a given chart. This might be a reason why Labouré's school prefer using planetary moieties... Re: How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 5 by Deb Hi Dima I use (and recommend the use of) the 5° orb for house cusps in horary and all forms of astrology. My experience is that the strongest symbolism comes when a planet is near to the cusp, and often it is just a few degrees before the cusp when it is most expressive. I think of it like an application that is being made, and the planet is very resonant to the affairs of that house when 'sitting upon it'. So if I see a planet 'on a cusp', within a few degrees of either side of it, I pay special attention to that planet in regard to the affairs of that house - much more than when a planet is within the house yet far away from the csup of it. Re: How do you treat a planet which is 3 degrees from a cusp 6 by Dima Gur Deb hi, Thanks for replying! Great logic, John Frawley also uses the same logic in his Horary Textbook. He says that a planet just outside the house (5/3 degrees or less) is like a person who weighs on the option to venture into something. This, he contrasts with planets already inside a house, where the person is already invested in something, and can't go back (or it would be costly to do so).
