Louis Armstrong Event: December 1, 1918 - Married Daisy Parker

97
On December 1, 1918 Louis married Daisy Parker, a prostitute he met in a dance hall; he was 17 years old. The profection was in the 6th sign, Virgo, which puts the profected Asc at 19 Virgo 19 and makes Mercury lord of the year.

Mercury is in the profected 11th and rules the profected 10th which could indicate friends (11th) that will be supportive (11th) with regards to his work (10th), women partners in particular as Mercury is in Cancer disposited by the Moon in the profected 7th however the Moon and Mars (ruler of the radix Asc in the profected 1st) are in a partile opposition indicating difficulties with partners and women in general while and Mercury (LoY) and the Moon are square, another indication of difficulties with women, especially women partners (7th) or friends (11th).

Given Mercury (LoY) rules one of the lots of marriage and that the profected 7th of marriage is ruled by Jupiter, general significator of marriage, and the Moon, general significator of the wife, is in the 7th of marriage, it is possible that, in the year, Louis will marry; however, Jupiter being square both the Moon in the 7th and Mars in the 1st and those two being in such a strong opposition the marriage is not likely to be a happy or lasting one. And, in fact, Louis left Daisy in 1922.

The Age Arc for the time was 17º 20'.

1. Directed Jupiter, the natural significator of marriage ruling the profected 7th (marriage), is critical at 0 CP and involved in multiple aspects, the strongest being the opposition to radix Neptune (illusion), the mitigated inconjunct (opposition) to Al-biruni's radix lot of Marriage, the square to Valens lot of Marriage. Directed Jupiter is also square to the lot of Liberty (his freedom will be curtailed in some fashion) , inconjunct directed Fortune (the marriage is averse to his Fortune) while Uranus (unexpected) is semi-sextile radix Jupiter. This may well be a case of Jupiter acting an accidental malefic again, all the oppositions and squares do not indicate a happy match as pointed out earlier, Louis did leave Daisy in 1922.

2. The directed 11th (profected 6th) is inconjunct directed Venus (ruler of the radix 7th) and in opposition to the directed Sun, ruler of the radix 5th (romance) but profected 12th. It's possible Louis met Daisy (Venus) while working (6th); the connections to the profected 6th and 12th could be indicating her status, given that she was a prostitute.

3. Directed Mars, ruler of the radix Asc, trine directed Pluto, sextile the directed lot of Marriage which is also sextile Pluto indicates drastic action, compulsion or coercion played a part in the match. Pluto is in the profected 9th which usually indicates a legal marriage.

4. It is interesting that Mars, Pluto, and directed Saturn, who is square the lot of Danger of Violence, are active given that Louis eventually left Daisy because she used to beat him.

Louis Armstrong Event: April 5, 1923 - 1st Recording with a Band

98
April 5, 1923 – First recording with a band

Louis made his first recording with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band at Gennett Records.

The profection was in the 10th place, Capricorn, which put the profected Asc at 19 CP and made Saturn Lord of the Year. The 10th rules the career (his first recording work) with Saturn in domicile in the 9th of long journeys (he had to travel from New Orleans to Chicago for the job) but marred by being in the profected 12th (envy) and ruling the profected 2nd (he will not be paid well).

The Age Arc was 21º 40'.

1. Uranus, in the profected 11th (associates) and Neptune in the profected 6th (work) are both critical. The directed 11th (associates) is on the profected 2nd (money) and is conjunct his SAN which Valens says is related to how well a person does in life; here perhaps, he needs work (6th) with the band (11th) to support (2nd) himself.

2. His directed 6th (work) is conjunct his radix Sun in the 5th of entertainment while his directed Sun opposes the lot of Praise & Acceptance and directed Venus is inconjunct Praise & Acceptance. The Sun is the general significator of authorities, bosses, while Venus rules the profected 10th, employers. The opposition and inconjunct indicate there would be problems in connection with work and the boss and as it turns out, Louis, who was playing 2nd cornet to the band leader King Oliver's 1st coronet, was found to be playing too loud so he was made to go stand and play in the farthest corner from the recording equipment so he would not drown out Oliver's, playing.

3. The directed Ascendant is trine the North Node, an indication that the move is good for him in some manner, but it is also square Pluto who is in the radix 2nd (money) and profected 5th (entertainment) indicating there were obstacles (square) that needed to be overcome. Pluto always acts through groups, either by cooperation or coercion; the aspect reinforces the radix 11th, profected 2nd indications of money through work with associates.

4. There are a number of aspects involving the Marriage lots, one of which is conjunct the lot of Work. Louis had been trying to get away from Daisy and the work in Chicago allowed him the opportunity to leave her in New Orleans. They divorced later in the year, on December 13th. The travel to leave his wife may also be shown by the directed Moon (wife and ruler of the profected 7th) conjunct the radix 12th (confinement) on the profected 3rd (short journeys). The Moon also has significations for travel.

The profection was in the 11th whole sign, Aquarius, with the profected Asc at 19 AQ and Saturn as Lord of the year. Saturn rules the radix 10th (career), profected 12th (enmity), the radix 11th (associates) , profected 1st (life) and is in the radix 9th (long journeys, courts), profected 11th (associates). 1. The directed lot of Marriage of Men is critical at 0 Leo (with Leo on the radix 5th of romance) while its radix counterpart is involved in a mitigated sextile (with the power of a trine) with directed Mercury, ruler of the profected 5th (romance) while he is semi-sextile his radix self. Uranus, the modern co-ruler of Aquarius, and the profected Asc, is also critical but it is not involved in any aspects nor is it changing degree; its critical state may be indicating a rash decision on Louis' part.

2. The directed 11th (profected Asc) is in opposition to the directed Sun, ruler of the profected 7th (marriage) while the directed Sun is in a mitigated semi-sextile (with the power of a conjunction) with the radix lot of Work, which is ruled by the Sun; an indication he met Lil Harden through his work (not a big step given she was a jazz singer). The radix Sun is in, and rules, the radix 5th (romance). Interestingly, the directed 11th is in an unmitigated inconjunct with the radix lot of Work; so the emphasis is on the Sun as ruler of the 7th rather than work itself.

3. The directed Asc is not directly involved in an aspect but it is changing degrees, an indication of an event directly affecting Louis' personal life; it is also conjunct the SAN, another indication the event will have a direct impact on how his life goes on.

4. Directed Jupiter, the natural significator of marriage, being sextile the N. Node (critical time in the life) and in a mitigated inconjunct (with the power of an opposition) with Fortune point to an event (sextile) that will directly effect the life (Node) but which will eventually lose importance (inconjunct) i.e. a marriage (Jupiter) that will fall apart (inconjunct).

5. That Lil Harden was met through work is further emphasized by directed Venus (natural significator of the wife) conjunct the radix lot of Work; Venus is in the profected 7th (marriage). The Moon, also a significator of the wife, opposes Venus and the directed 11th (profected Asc) is also in an unmitigated inconjunct with Venus, it's possible Louis was more interested in romance than marriage. At any event, the oppositions and inconjuncts do not point to a lasting relationship and the pair divorced on September 30, 1938.

3. The directed 2nd/8th and directed nodal axis are now conjunct while the directed MC is trine the lot of Death. Death has been activated in earlier events; I'm beginning to think the activations relate to either debts or theft; with theft of his wages being the more likely scenario given his managers were said to have mob connections.

1. The directed MC (status) is changing degrees while it is in opposition to Mercury, ruler of the radix 6th (work), profected 5th of romance, and in a mitigated inconjunct with the lots of Marriage and Work.

2. The directed 2nd (the profection is in the 2nd) is sextile Mercury, ruler of the 5th of romance and semi-sextile the lot of Marriage.

3. The directed Sun (in the radix 5th) is semi-sextile directed Venus (LoY).

I've noticed these Cancer-Leo semi-sextiles show up quite often, I have been handling them as straight aversions but in re-reading my texts for more information on mitigated signs I found that Ibn-Ezra says “Even though the Moon has [only] one domicile and the Sun has [only] one domicile, as they are both rulers, their domiciles are considered as belonging to one ruler.” (The Beginning of Wisdom, trans. By Meira B. Epstein, ARHAT, p.83) and while I couldn't find anything in Abu'Mashar's Abbreviation, Dykes Introduction to Astrology gives the following as being in Abu'Mashar's Greater Introduction: “But Cancer and Leo are the domiciles of the luminaries, [and are] in one journey, because each of them is the [sole] domicile of its Lord.” Both statements imply that the semi-sextile between Cancer and Leo should be treated the same as the semi-sextile between like-engirding signs i.e. as a conjunction.

4. The Moon (general significator of the wife) in the profected 11th is square the North Node (turning point in the life) and trine Pluto in the profected 1st while directed Pluto is trine radix Venus, ruler of the radix 7th (marriage).

5. Directed Saturn, ruler of the profected 9th (courts) is trine the radix Ascendant. While directed Jupiter, the ruler of the radix 9th (courts) and general significator of marriage, is sextile the N. Node and semi-sextile radix Saturn.

The directions indicate a romance (5th, Venus) and a legal (9th) marriage (7th, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Marriage lot) but the squares, oppositions, and inconjuncts indicate it will probably not last and the two divorced on October 2, 1942. The instability of the marriage is also indicated by most of the active planets being in cardinal and mutable signs; the only direction in fixed signs is the square between the Moon and the N. Node while the Moon trines Pluto in the profected 1st in Gemini (mutable-change).

2. The directed lot of Marriage is conjunct the radix Ascendant while the directed Moon (wife) is trine Mars, ruler of the radix Asc. Louis and Lucille were married until Louis' death in 1971. While there are some incojuncts, oppositions and squares, unlike the times of his earlier marriages, this time there were also a number of conjunctions, trines and sextiles and, unlike his first marriage, which also took place under a 6th sign profection, this time Jupiter, the general significator of marriage, was in charge. The marriage probably had its ups and downs but it appears the more favourable start helped them overcome the negatives, in particular, the trines and sextiles involved fixed signs, giving the relationship some stability.

Louis Armstrong appeared on the February 21, 1949 cover of Time Magazine.

The profection is in the 12th sign, Pisces, putting the profected Asc at 19 Pisces and making Jupiter Lord of the Year. This is a completely different event than the one that landed him in jail when he was eleven years old. At that time directed Jupiter was inactive and the directions involving his radix Asc and Asc ruler were harsher. The directions here, with an Age Arc of 47º 11', are more plentiful and those relating to the Asc and rulers are more promising.

1. The directed Moon (sect light) is conjunct the MC while the profection is in the 10th while inconjunct directed Mars, ruler of the radix Asc and directed Mars is conjunct the radix Sun. The Sun is the ruler of the profected 8th house, Mars is the ruler of the radix 8th. All the old texts warn of the possibility of death if a light crosses an angle.

2. Initially I was surprised to see the only aspect to the lot of Death was an inconjunct from Jupiter, so, no help from a benefic? But after being through so many of Worsdale charts I'd expected to see something a little more dramatic. I've been using the Dorotheus lot of Death as calculated by Janus which, when I double checked, I realized does not reverse the lot. This is a night chart, the Sun is in the 4th, well under the earth.

The lot is from the Moon to the 8th projected from Saturn, when I reverse it I get 1 Gemini 09, conjunct the directed Sun! Which is more in line with what I expected to see. That doesn't make it right of course but I do generally find reversed lots for night births are more revealing; it might also explain why the lot of Death I was using kept coming up but seemed mostly irrelevant or more connected to other 8th house concerns.

3. Lastly, directed Pluto (symbolically, death) in the radix 2nd (with an analogy to death by its opposition to the 8th) was square radix Neptune in the radix 3rd (signifying sleep, dreams by its opposition to the 9th) while directed Neptune was inconjunct the directed N. Node which was conjunct directed Saturn.

Louis Armstrong: Reading the Chart

106
Reading the Chart
Usually the chart is read first and then an attempt is made to time the expected events. For the purpose of study I've gone at this in the reverse. After knowing the what and when of the life, where in the chart do we find the indications?

Multiple Marriages
Marriage is generally said to be signified by the 7th, Venus in a man's chart, and the Lot(s) of Marriage, of which there are a few.

Here, the 7th is in Libra, a cardinal sign, which promises “new” events, supported by Venus (L7) in Virgo, a mutable sign, indicating “change” indicating there will most likely be more than one marriage (there were 4). At the time of each marriage either the ruler of the profected 7th or the radix 7th was active by direction and the same can be said for the 9th (legal marriage). Venus is in her Fall in Virgo which would indicate sudden or abrupt marriages that would not last; also, marriage to women who were “fallen” in some manner.

Venus is in the 5th of romance, entertainment conjunct the 6th (0º50'), an indication his wives will likely be met through his work (and all four of them were, with three being directly involved in the entertainment industry, and one, Alpha, a fan who made it a point to sit front row, centre at his gigs).

At the time of each marriage Valens lot of Marriage (from Jupiter to Venus) was active:
1. Daisy Parker – Asc ruler was sextile the lot
2. Lil Harden - the ruler of the profected 7th was semi-sextile the lot
3. Alpha Smith – the IC was conjunct the lot
4. Lucille Wilson – the MC was inconjunct the lot

Unfortunately, when I was double checking the lot aspects, I realized that Al-Biurni's lot (from Venus to the 7th) was, like the lot of Death, not being reversed in Janus, so the aspects that I thought existed at the time of Louis' marriage to Daisy Parker and Lucille Wilson, were not accurate.

Firmicus' lot of the Marriage of Men (from Saturn to Venus) was only active for Lil Harden's marriage and was connected with the 5th of romance rather than the 7th.

Triplicity Rulers
Dorotheus says we should check the triplicity lords of Venus. Venus a nocturnal planet at 7 Virgo whose triplicity rulers are, 1st, by night, the Moon; 2nd, Venus, participating, Mars. The Moon is in the 12th, cadent which Dorotheus says indicates there will be no marriage or a marriage to women who are whores or disgraced or young. Mars, the participating triplicity ruler is, also cadent and so indicates the same and his first wife was a prostitute. Venus, ruling the 2nd half of his life, is in the 5th, succedent, indicating a middling marriage and, being trine Jupiter, an “agreeable wife”. While his last wife appears to have been the most agreeable both Lucille, and his third wife, Alpha, were quite a bit younger than him.

12th Part
The calculated 12th part of Venus is at 10 SA 29 which falls in the 8th House, not a great indication, it indicates his marriages, partners, business contracts cost him money, possibly put him in debt. The ruler, Jupiter, falls in the 2nd from the 8th so he will have the resources to support himself but, as it is with Saturn, possibly always with the threat of loss or poverty. The 12th part by division is also in Sagittarius which is on the 9th, a better indication, as the 9th is a good place, it would also point to legal marriages.

Life and Death
Armstrong's chart has the Fixed Star Vega conjunct the MC (1º36') which is of the nature of Venus and Mercury, it promises “high success” when on the MC along with wealth, good fortune, and artistic talent. Louis also has Saturn in Capricorn elevated, conjunct the MC, and conjunct Jupiter in a good house (9th). Saturn, usually called the greater malefic, is in domicile here and of good quality, and, being with Jupiter, the greater benefic, he is improved. He will still present the native with problems but overall he promises continuous (in domicile) good in the life in connection with the career.

Jupiter, ruler of the 12th House, in the 9th and with the ruler of the MC promises that Armstrong's education (9th) and career (Saturn ruling 10th) will benefit, in some fashion, from things connected with prison, captivity and suffering. Louis learned how to play the horn while in a reform school. The 12th is also the house of crime and in his early years, Louis most likely got his start playing in clubs that were owned by the mob; by all accounts, his managers had mob connections.

His lot of Fortune, well placed in the 5th House of entertainment and conjunct it's ruler, the Sun, who promises fame but, as they are averse to the 10th, his real fame, as the founding father of jazz, came about only after his death (5th things said of the person after their death). This is further supported by Uranus in the 8th (death) trine the Sun (fame) and lot of Fortune (career).

The Ascendant ruler, Mars, is in detriment in the 6th House. This is an indication of the circumstances surrounding his early life (he grew up in poverty in the seedier areas of New Orleans). Mars is square the MC and it's ruler, Saturn, with Saturn receiving him by domicile and into his (Mars) exaltation; another indication he could rise in life through his work (6th) and career (MC).

Mars is in partile opposition to the Moon, general significator of music which is also signified by Libra. This would give him musical ability while Mars in Libra would indicate a musical (Libra) instrument (Mars). The Moon is in the 12th, an indication the musical ability was developed in the confines of or in connection with a prison, crime, or through charitable institutions. The opposition is relieved by Uranus' partile trine to the Moon and sextile to Mars; giving an individualistic and inventive character to the man and his work.

Uranus is in Sagittarius, it's Fall (following Zain's attributions for the outer planets), and rules the 11th House of income from work; an indication he may not have been paid what he was worth or that what he earned went into his partners pockets (8th). This is further supported by Venus, ruler of the 2nd House of money, also in Fall in Virgo. Given the times and the situation in the US during the first half of the 20th Century it would not be unusual to discover a black artist was being underpaid and having his money controlled by a manager.

The Moon rules the 4th House of the home, family and father. The ruler of the 4th in the 12th often indicates an absent father and in Armstrong's case this held true, his father deserted the family when he was an infant.

Triplicity Rulers
This is a nocturnal chart with the Moon (sect light) at 13 Aries; her triplicity rulers are 1st, Jupiter, 2nd, Sun, and the participating ruler is Saturn. Jupiter is cadent, an indication the beginning of his life was “unsteady and anxious”, subject to poverty, possibly “afflicted with criminal charges” with the native being “base and unfortunate” as well as “needy and miserable”; however, he is in the 9th conjunct (6º47') the participating triplicity ruler, Saturn, who is in domicile, conjunct the MC and so can help to raise Louis up.

The 2nd triplicity ruler is the Sun in domicile in Leo, a fixed sign, in the 5th, a succedent (middling) house; it promises lasting (fixed) fame (Sun) through 5th house matters: pleasures, entertainments and certainly the second half of Louis' life was much better than the first.

12th Part
The calculated 12th part of the Moon is 24 VI 25 in the 6th house of work and his life was one of poverty and work for a long time. Its ruler, Mercury, falls in the radix 4th, the 11th (good place) from the 6th, so he benefits from his work. By division, the part also falls in Virgo.

General Overview of the Chart
Louis has six planets below the horizon, and indication a good part of his life was not in the public sphere. He has seven planets in the western hemisphere of the chart, an indication his life was shaped by the circumstances he found himself in rather than solely by his own inner being. His planets are well balanced with 3 in Fire, 3 in Earth, 2 in Air, and 2 in Water and indication he was capable of zeal, enthusiasm, practicality, social graces as well as sympathy and kindness.

His planets are evenly distributed in the qualities, giving a balanced approach to life. With four planets in the cardinal signs he was a self-starter; three in fixed allows him to pay attention to details and gives him a sense of determination in seeing things through while three in the mutable signs makes him adaptable to change.

With four planets in the companionship houses (4 thru 7) a good chunk of his energies are taken up by the concerns of others however he has 3 in the personal houses (12 thru 3) and three in the public houses (8 thru 11) so he spreads his energy fairly evenly in all areas of his life.

He has four planets in the Life houses (1,5,9) so he is primarily concerned with having a good life, he gives the least attention to his associations with others (1 planet in the 3, 7, 11) being more concerned with private, behind the scenes matters (1 planet in each of 4, 8, and 12) and his financial arrangements (1 planet each in the 2nd and 8th).

He has a very close (all aspects less than 1º 30' apart) grand trine between Moon-Uranus-Sun in the fire signs (creativity) connecting his 12th (secrets, anxieties)-5th (pleasures)-8th (debts, expenditures). According to Bil Tierney in Dynamics of Aspect Analysis people with grand trines in Fire “[strive] to remain independent and autonomous” and with Uranus and the Sun in the mix this may be even more true in Louis' case.

Astrodatabank source notes give the time as coming from the Birth Certificate:
“On 22 May 2015 Sy Scholfield found birth records online [2] including original baptismal/birth record from the Braunau rectory stating birth on 20 April 1889 "6½ Abends" (6:30 in the evening) and baptism on 22 April at "3¼" (3:15pm), and birth announcement.”
I've changed my spreadsheet, it now uses the data from the Janus 6 Speculum (which I haven't bothered to reformat for easy posting) with the exception of the planet poles which I still calculate separately (Morinus will also produce the same poles).
Sun 46.6833
Moon 16.1528
Mercury 47.4901
Venus 39.1686
Mars 40.3733

Saturn 5.7607
Uranus 44.4462
Neptune 34.3692
Pluto 34.5246

Event: December 21, 1907 Mother dies
Hitler's mother died on December 21, 1907 when he was 18 years old. The profection was in the 7th whole sign, Aries, making Mars Lord of the Year. The profected Asc is in Aries in the same degree as the radix Asc, 26 AR 40. Mars is in the profected 1st with the Sun (ruler of the radix 10th of the mother) conjunct Venus (ruler of the radix Asc). The Age Arc is 18º 40'.

1. Directed Moon (general significator of the mother) square directed Saturn (in the radix 10th, mother) who is square Jupiter, ruler of the radix 5th (8th from the 10th of the mother) while the directed Moon is square radix Jupiter.

2. The directed Asc (person) is square Jupiter, and Venus, ruler of the radix Asc, is trine the radix lot of the the Mother's Death.

The symbolism is pretty straightforward. The lot of the Mother's Death is given by Bonatti as “from Venus to Saturn” projected from the Ascendant. Note that Venus (ruler of the radix Asc), Mars (ruler of the profected Asc), Jupiter (ruler of the 8th from the 10th) and Fortune are all changing degrees during the period of the death and that the North Node is critical, indicating a critical time in the life. As well, the directed 3rd, which holds the nodal axis, is sextile the Moon (mother) and in a mitigated inconjunct (opposition) with Saturn, ruler the profected 10th.

It's possible the death was unexpected or unusual in some manner as the directed 11th is in Leo (which is the radix 10th) is now on the 8th from the profected 10th and the cusp is sextile radix Uranus while directed Uranus is conjunct the radix 12th (sorrow, loss).

Re: Investigating Directions, Profections, and Lots

108
"I've noticed these Cancer-Leo semi-sextiles show up quite often, I have been handling them as straight aversions but in re-reading my texts for more information on mitigated signs I found that Ibn-Ezra says “Even though the Moon has [only] one domicile and the Sun has [only] one domicile, as they are both rulers, their domiciles are considered as belonging to one ruler.”
------------------
May I suggest when looking at the domicile of the Luminaries to consider:

1) The term and its ruler.

For Cancer, you have Mars and Venus (nocturnal) for the first 2 terms.
Then Mercury (nocturnal if occidental to the Sun, diurnal if oriental to the Sun)
Then Jupiter and Saturn (diurnal) for the last 2 terms.

For Leo, you have Jupiter (diurnal) for the first term, Venus (nocturnal) for the 2nd, Saturn (diurnal) for the 3rd, Mercury (same as above) and Mars (nocturnal) for the last term.

2) The sign and its ruler where you find the Sun or the Moon.
--------------
Does it occupy the same sect as the Sun or the Moon?
Does it apply to a diurnal or a nocturnal planet?
Does this planet send a ray to the Sun or the Moon?
For this reason, the ruler of the term or sign of the Moon or the Sun becomes a prime factor in the consideration of your judgment.
Look at Cancer or Leo rising in birth charts and you will find that they manifest more strongly the nature of the term or the sign where you find the Sun or the Moon.
How many times do you hear Cancer or Leo rising people not behaving like Cancer or Leo? But more like the sign where you find the Sun or the Moon.

Hairesis does not act on the power of the planet but on its quality. Angularity is power and supercedes dignities.

I like your analysis grid.
