Hello Rory,

A Solar Return is normally tied to Primary Directions, Profections and Planetary Ages.

But more specifically as it relates to Solar Return, you can use several techniques.

1) Symbolic direction of the Moon > 1 month = 1 degree
See what aspects the Moon will perfect during the year
I have seen some astrologers apply it from the position of the Moon at sunset (nocturnal chart) or sunrise (diurnal chart). I have not personnaly tested this direction.
2) Sun transits over the SR and Natal chart
3) Lunar returns
4) NM and FM especially what becomes Angular
I would even extend it to the Quarter Moons
5) SR ASC diurnal
This one you progress the SR ASC like a diurnal chart.
In Planetdance, right-click > Edit
In the section UT, choose Other and enter the Time Zone difference with Greenwich. Normally, you should have a number already greyed out in the box.
After that you just need to save the chart and progress it for any date of the year you want to check.
By choosing Other in UT section, no need to worry about the Time Changes during the year.

Although I think that your question has been answered, I wish to add that when the Return planet is in a Cadent house the last third of the return period may be more active, in Angular the 1st part of the return period and in a Succedent the middle part.

We mostly use a combination of the methods mentioned above. I use the Solar/any planet Return chart with current transits and I also check Lunar returns for the one suggesting similar issues. Whether the return planet is in a Cadent/Succedent/Angular house is important too.
I've been wondering what I'm on this planet for ever since I was born. I have found my answer using Astrology.

One can progress a solar return chart just like a nativity, with Secondary progressions. One should use Standard Quotidian to progress the angles, or use the Sun/MC phase angle from the solar return to advance the Midheaven by the transiting Sun.
The Moon will move about 13 degrees or so, and the MC will move 360 degrees in the year. Some aspects, either between SR planets, or between the radix and the SR, may perfect.
The chart should be progressed using a Sidereal day instead of a Solar day, regardless of what Zodiac one uses.

i have to ask... do you want someone to read a solar return chart as a stand alone chart with no knowledge of the natal chart? it can't work my man!!! you need a root chart to be able to offer a view on the solar return.... but regardless - what happened? i'm curious! you're still alive right??

Actual transits are said to trigger something which is shown in the natal chart, the profection, the direction and/or the Solar return. If the transiting significator is retrograde and it is a slow one, it normally passes three times over a great period of time. I’ve heard of the observation that the third time is the relevant one, but just experienced a case where passing in the retrograde motion was the effective one. The first and third passing were without events. You have to know that the transiting planet is retrograde in the natal chart also. Has someone made similar observations and can confirm this?

Actually, this is a very old post of mine! I am sorry, I have been absent for too long!

I cannot recall in which book I have read this. I think it is from Noel Tyl's book, but I cannot find it right now. However, you can find it easily as a concept. I looked it up and I have found it in this article. Go down to the heading "Solar Rays". It's in the 3rd paragraph.

However, now I "progress the Solar Return/any planet Return". It is easy to do in Astroseek. You make up the chart, for example the Solar Return and above the chart there is an option called "monthly/Daily Revolutions". If there is a planet close to an angle, look for when it becomes exactly conjunct an angle; it is then that the energy is manifested. Look for both transits to Solar Return and Natal chart. To narrow down the Daily option.

I see I misunderstood your hint. I thought you are referring to cases where the transiting planet becomes retrograde after first transit, makes a second one and then a third. I just had experienced the case that the second transit in retrograde motion was the relevant one…
