Singapore Flight Turbulence

1
I've been looking at Weather charts lately and decided to take a closer look at an incident that happened on May 21, 2024 when a flight from Singapore to London encountered extreme turbulence near Bangkok where they were forced to land at 3:45pm LMT approximately 10 minutes after suddenly dropping almost 700 feet. Thirty passengers were injured, 7 critically, and one elderly man died. The flight had departed Singapore at 10:38pm London time, 5:38pm ET.

The method is based on Zain's approach to weather prediction; a brief summary can be found in the Skyscript article on Astro-Meterology by Kim Farnell.

Temperature Chart
Turbulence-20240521-Temp.png Turbulence-20240521-Temp.png Viewed 1799 times 172.21 KiB
  • 4th (1/2) - Leo (hot,still,dry), Sun in Aries (hot, windy, dry)
  • 1st (1/4) - Gemini (cold, windy, dry), Mercury in Aries (hot, windy, dry) [Gemini is the windiest sign]
  • Sun in Aries (1/8) - Mars in Aquarius (cold, crisp, dry) [in violent charts, AQ can have driving winds]
  • Angles (1/8)- Mars (some wind), Venus (mild winds), Saturn (still, destructive winds if violence indicated)
  • Aspects - Pluto trine Asc (0°55'), Mars partile semi-sextile Neptune
  • Transits May 21: Venus || Asc
The chart looks to be fairly windy, the Mercury Ingress chart is used for timing air movement.

Air Movement
Turbulence-20240521-Air.png Turbulence-20240521-Air.png Viewed 1799 times 171.41 KiB
  • 4th (1/2) - Taurus (calm), Venus in Taurus (calm)
  • 1st (1/4) - Aquarius (crisp) [in violent charts, AQ can have driving winds], Uranus in Taurus (calm), Saturn in Pisces (calm)
Mercury in Taurus (1/8) - Venus in Taurus (calm)
  • Angles (1/8) - Saturn (violent), Uranus (violent), Sun (calm unless part of a violent configuration), Jupiter (pleasant breezes), Moon (breezes)
  • Aspects - Uranus partile conjunct IC conjunct Sun (2°06') conjunct Jupiter (2°14') with Jupiter partile square the Moon, Venus contra-parallel Asc
  • Transits on May 21: Uranus contra-parallel Asc, Mars sextile Asc and Moon moved to parallel the Asc
The chart looks calm but with 5 planets in the angles, including violent Saturn and disruptive Uranus on the IC coupled with Aquarius on the Asc sudden violent bursts of air are a possibility.
Expansive Jupiter in the mix, being harmed by the Sun and Uranus and partile square the Moon in the 6th, adding to the violence; he is also partile square Mars (violence) and sextile Neptune (planes) in the Temperature chart while the Moon opposes the Temperature chart Mars.
Although I'm not sure cross-referencing the charts in this manner is kosher; just scratching the surface of weather charts at the moment.

Moisture
Didn't check the moisture chart as the temperature chart is fairly dry and no rain was involved during the incident.

As the time the flight took off was given decided to see if it tied into the Temperature and Air Movement charts.

Flight Take-off
Turbulence-20240521-Singapore-London.png Turbulence-20240521-Singapore-London.png Viewed 1799 times 173.03 KiB
Uranus is in the 1st nearest to the cusp with Mercury conjunct the Asc in the 12th; with Uranus exactly on the IC of the Bangkok air movement chart and Pluto conjunct the MC and partile trine the Bangkok ingress Asc. It is interesting that both Neptune (planes) and the Moon (people) are in the critical 29th degree of their signs with the Moon in the Air Movement chart in partile opposition to Neptune in the Temperature chart.

Hi Jane,

Very cool approach here, using the weather charts to investigate the event. I dig it.

Some additional details (unrelated to weather specifically) that stuck out to me:

1st chart (Aries Ingress) -

Mars, so elevated and advancing to the MC, while also being "exalted" (lifted up) ruler of the 9th house (foreign travel). The sign of Mars' "fall" is on the 3rd (short journeys - plane rides do save a lot of time). Mars is sextile the 12th (unforeseen dangers) and 8th (crisis; death) house cusps , and trine the 6th cusp (injuries). There's a bit of "sudden terror in the air" I can see here.

Mars is associated with action and force (engines possibly) and 'it rules the hard and abrupt' (Valens).
Here, it's in Aquarius, a sign whose jagged line symbols look like a bumpy ride, but being a fixed air sign could also be a "wall of air."
Aquarius is a human sign, and some associate it with technology - people ride in planes invented by people.

You noted that in the event chart that the Moon and Neptune (which you give to 'ships') are both at 29°
Here, Mars and Neptune are both at 27°

Turbulence event chart :

If we look at it as transits to the Ingress chart discussed above:
The transiting Moon just trined Ingress Mars and is exactly on the cusp of the Ingress chart 6th. I've always associated the Moon with 'ships,' but also, groups of people/the public and 'journeying' in general.

Mars has moved to 15° Aries: applying to the Ingress charts N. node (increase) and Mercury (winds). In the Ingress chart Mercury and the node are in the 11th (safe harbors), and I suppose this accident could have ended in worse ways.

Editing to add: Pluto is prominent in both the ingress and event charts. In the former, it is in 9, and the Moon has just opposed it; in the latter, it is on the MC and mutually applies a square with the Moon. Pluto's position is near two fixed stars: Altair & Albireo; both from constellations said to be BIRDS
thoughts are just thoughts

Thanks for starting this thread Jane. I've been wanting to look at the chart because dramatic air turbulence seems to be turning into a 'theme' right now. Here is a story from the BBC yesterday about another violent incident which left a dozen people injured:

Turbulence on Doha-Dublin flight leaves 12 injured
Upon landing shortly before 13:00 local time, Qatar Airways flight QR017 was met by emergency services including airport police, ambulance and fire officers.
Six passengers and six crew members reported injuries - of these, eight people have been taken to hospital.

Great catch Jason, I was so focused on following Zain's template I completely overlooked this!

Yes, definitely.

Another good catch, thanks.

The correct details listed on wiki. The exact coordinates and local time of failure are listed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore ... Flight_321

Flightradar had the history of the flight and the detour. Pretty thorough record as one would expect from aviation.

The puzzle is why flights ahead and around the area did not report any unusual turbulence.

I see SIA have replace the Boeing with an Airbus. There may have been turbulence, but I since we have had other incidents, I would follow the saying, once is never, twice is always and (given the existing Boeing inaptitude and lack of testing), put money on badly tested software being glitchy.

I have included tropical(first) and sidereal(second) charts.

What is interesting is a wild card Thors Hammer with pluto, asc and MC. Its text book reaction actually.

The flight was delayed and there was an almost exact yod from moon at 29 libra, jupiter neptune on departure from LHR.

On the tropical chart, a ten minute prior look had the asc and Mc at exact 29 Vir and MC 29 Gem. Square exact neptune sitting at desc. Some error crept in at that point and triggered the Thors, 10 minutes later.

Thanks so much for posting Calli, didn't know Wiki would have that kind of detail!
Calli wrote: What is interesting is a wild card Thors Hammer with pluto, asc and MC. Its text book reaction actually.
I'm not sure what Thors Hammer is; in the tropical event chart Pluto at 2 AQ is trine the Asc at 1 LI and inconjunct the MC 1 CA, is that what you're referencing? or have I missed something?

I couldn't find any useful information on the Dohai/Dublin flight from the 26th. The reports all say it landed safely in Dublin but that the turbulence took place somewhere over Turkey. Perhaps a wiki entry will appear in the near future.

I did find some info on an earlier incident on a flight between Phoenix and Honolulu: On December 18, 2022, three dozen people were hurt when a flight from Phoenix to Honolulu hit turbulence 30 miles of the coast of Honolulu. Eleven were hospitalized in serious condition, 9 were hospitalized in stable condition. The flight landed in Honolulu at 11:30 Local time.

Temperature Chart
Turbulence-20221218-T-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Turbulence-20221218-T-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Viewed 1693 times 108.96 KiB
  • 4th (1/2) - Taurus (moderate, calm, wet), Venus in Virgo (cold, windy, dry)
  • 1st (1/4) - Capricorn (cold, windy, violent), Saturn in Aquarius (cold, windy, violent)
  • Sun in Libra (1/8) - Venus in Virgo (cold, windy, dry)
  • Angles (1/8) - Saturn (violent), Uranus (violent), Moon (breezy)
Aspects: Saturn square Uranus (0°45'), Saturn trine Mars (2°15'), Sun conjunct Venus (0°29'), Venus opposition Neptune (1°41')
Indications are mainly for cold, dry, conditions with possibility of violent winds. Supported by the Sun partile conjunct Mercury with Venus all in the 8th. Mercury and Venus in MR by domicile likely kept the damage to serious injuries rather than death.
Venus rules the 9th of long journeys and is opposite Neptune (planes). As well, in weather charts, Zain notes that Neptune often indicates odd things falling from the sky; usually it would refer to cloudbursts with frogs or fish or what not but here it could be an indication of a plane falling, Neptune was highlighted in the Singapore chart and also in the 2nd house which is the 11th from the 4th so it 'falls' rather than 'crashes'?

Air Movement
Turbulence-20221218-Air-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Turbulence-20221218-Air-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Viewed 1693 times 105.24 KiB
  • 4th (1/2) - Gemini (windy), Mercury in Capricorn (violent)
  • 1st (1/4) - Pisces (calm), Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces (calm)
  • Mercury in Capricorn (1/8) - Saturn in Aquarius (violent)
  • Angles (1/8) - Neptune (violent), Jupiter (if afflicted adds to violence), Mars (violent), Sun (calm unless part of violent configuration), Venus (mild), Mercury (windy)
    Aspects: Sun opposition Mars (1°51')
Indications are for wind with calm periods; 6 angular planets indicate a lot of activity. Mars, in Gemini, the windiest sign, rules the 9th of long journeys and he is afflicting the Sun in the 10th.

Moisture Chart
Turbulence-20221218-Moisture-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Turbulence-20221218-Moisture-Phoenix-Honolulu.png Viewed 1693 times 107.58 KiB
  • 4th (1/2) - Sagittarius (windy, dry), Jupiter in Pisces (calm, wet)
  • 1st (1/4) - Virgo (windy, dry), Mercury in Capricorn (violent)
  • Moon in Virgo (1/8) - Mercury in Capricorn (violent)
  • Angles (1/8) - Moon (wet), Sun (dry), Jupiter (moist), Neptune (violent), Mars (violent)
Looks to be mainly dry but with a possibility of violent storms.

Transits on December 18th:

Jupiter sextile Temperature Asc, Sun semi-sextile Temperature Asc
Mercury was sesqui-square the Moisture Asc;
Mercury semi-square Air Asc
as Mercury was trine Uranus, transit Mars was sesqui-square transit Pluto who was semi-sextile transit Sun

So the Ascendants in all three charts were being activated by minor aspects except for the Jupiter sextile to the Sun ingress chart which likely held off the worst of turbulence

Jane,

If I can bring some water to your mill.
I am not a specialist of astro-meteorology but what I have seen used by the experts on this are
1) The Ingress chart preceding the event like the one you draw and comparing it with the event chart.
2) Ptolemy used the NM or FM prior to the Ingress.
3) Kris Brandt Riske in her book 'Astrometeorology' says that any Lunar Phase are as important to consider (including the QM) and she also makes extensive use of parallel and contraparallel being neutral in itself depending on the nature of the planets involved, similar or contrary by nature. Same with the conjunction.
She adds that declinations are even more potent when planets are on the equator (0 degree of declination) or in maximum declination (20 degrees or more north or south before changing direction).
As for the Angles, the two points of the MC/IC are the most important to consider followed by the AS/DS and the Houses show the directions without putting emphasis on the nature of the Houses.
Good to know! If the problematic configuration falls in my 2nd House, I am not going to loose my wallet in the turbulence.

According to the work of Professor Paul D. Williams, of the University of Reading, in Great Britain, the risks of turbulence in 'clear air', that is to say which occurs without warning and in good weather, are called to increase radically if humanity continues to release CO2 into the atmosphere. And unlike turbulence caused by the convection of hot air, they are not detectable by radars.

The book from Riske indicates it was first printed in 1997.
And she was a regular contributor on Dell's Horoscope on the subject.
She does mention the Babylonians as far back as the second millennium B.C.
In her sources:
- Dr. J. Goad 'Astro-Meteorologica', first published in London in 1686
- Zadkiel's Almanack, first published in 1830 and later published as a small brochure entitled 'The Weather Guide'
- Alfred J. Pearce, who studied the subject for nearly 50 years and his results in the 'Textbook of Astrology', Book II in 1889.
- G.J. McCormack (1887-1974) who recorded and analyzed weather data for 40 years and his findings were presented at a meteorological seminar in New York in 1963.

Her method is fairly simple. After setting up the Ingress and Lunar Phase chart with aspects to the AS and IC, she will look at transiting aspects to these points. She uses all aspects including the minor ones. And she has a list of keywords for all planet combinations including Pluto. Keeping in mind the nature of the signs - Hot, cold, dry, humid.
Today, we have as an additional tool, the Astro*Carto*Graphy.
I also like the article of Kim Farnell with a twist on Mercury Ingress and sunrise charts although she does not mention the minor aspects if only for the parallel of declination.
And of course, a good understanding of meteorology is a big plus in making predictions.
Blessings!
