Charles Fort: Frogs raining down on Kansas City and other odd events

Read an interesting article this morning, In Praise of the Paranormal Curiosity of Charles Fort, Patron Saint of Cranks on LitHub. Sadly I could not find a birth time for him so decided to take a look at the event highlighted at the top of the article: Frogs raining down on Kansas City, Missouri on July 12, 1873.

The Sun (L6 small animals) is in the 12th in the partile overcoming sextile of Saturn (L10, 11, 12) and in the trine (1°) of Uranus (co-ruler of the 12th).
The cusps of 6th/12th (animals) are partile square the nodes with Neptune (freak weather) in the 1st trine the 6th (small animals) and in the opposition of Mars in Scorpio (violent).

4th (1/2) - Cancer (wet), Moon in Capricorn (storms)
1st (1/4) - Taurus (wet), Venus (wet) in Gemini (driving rain if rain indicated)
Moon in Cancer (1/8) - Capricorn (storms), Sun in Cancer (wet)
Angles (1/8) - Pluto (drizzle, violent); Venus (wet), Uranus (cloudbursts), Mercury (adds wind to storms), Saturn (wet, storms)
Aspects - Uranus partile square Asc, Mars in 6th in 1° opposition of Asc

Neptune (freak weather) in 10th, Mars in 4th (violent weather) partile square Uranus (sudden, unusual weather) in 1st.

Fort is an interesting character, he wrote a number of books and has a site dedicated to him; if you are looking for information on quirky, odd events of all kinds here are links to a number of rabbit holes:

The Book of the Damned - source of the details on the above event
Three Books by Charles Fort - compendium of his observations compiled by Robert Bedrosian
The Complete Works of Charles Fort - on the Sacred Texts site
And there's a whole site devoted to him The Charles Fort Institute (sadly I couldn't find a birth time for him)

You're quite a whizz at coming up with interesting threads, Jane! Frogs are ruled by Cancer according to Rex Bills so it's interesting to see the sign on the Ascendant (The immediate environment; Place/Location ) is indeed in the sign of Cancer and with the Moon boldly square Pluto-N.Node, fixed G.Cross, conjunct POF and quincunx Sun-Asc no less. Hmm... seems like Rex has nailed it.

Will investigate further.

Kansas – My first reaction was to think of The Wizard of Oz, followed by thoughts of tornadoes.

Then, I found this Wikipedia article:

Rain of animals

This seems to make sense.

Before looking at the horoscope, I thought that small animals belong to the 6th house, frogs are water creatures - possibly related to the Moon, and tornadoes are related to Mercury.

On the FM Chart of July 10th, the Moon is in the 10th house and forms an exact trine aspect with the cusp of the 6th house. The Moon - water creatures, and in - Capricorn - debilitation - abnormal situations or behaviors.

Neptune = Sun/Moon (FM chart), mysterious events.

Event chart: The Moon opposes Mercury (storms/tornadoes).

This is all I can think of for now. I welcome any additions and corrections from everyone.

Oh cool, I didn't see that connection Greg, thanks.

Thanks for the link Wei, interesting article. Knew I should have looked at the wind chart (Mercury Ingress into Leo)
Frog Rain-18730712-Wind-Kansas.png Frog Rain-18730712-Wind-Kansas.png Viewed 1084 times 113.11 KiB
And Mercury is smack on the Ascendant in partile opposition to Saturn with Mars, Pluto and Neptune all angular as well.
Fire and Air signs on the cusps - violent dry and unusual wind? Also a partile trine between Neptune and Jupiter (L6) and Pluto right on the North Node increasing intensity?

On the event day, Jupiter had moved to 0 Virgo, partile semi-sextile the Wind chart Asc and Mercury (spreading/expanding the downpour?) and it rules the 6th in both the Wind chart and the sunrise chart.

Jane,

FM Chart of July 10th:

I have not checked the specific date of Mercury's greatest east elongation, but I noticed that on August 13th, the Sun and Mercury will conjunct, indicating that on July 10th, Mercury will be in a Moist and Warm position, which also represents tornadoes.

Information found online:
Tornadoes often occur in unstable air masses with high temperature and humidity. In these conditions, the air is highly disturbed, with significant temperature differences between upper and lower layers. When the ground temperature is around 30°C, the temperature at an altitude of 8,000 meters drops to -30°C. This temperature difference causes cold air to descend rapidly and hot air to rise quickly, leading to fast convection between the air layers, forming many small vortices.
Then, Mercury's declination is at 17°04' North, corresponding to Kansas' latitude of 39°05' North (I still need to confirm the specific values, but both are in the northern hemisphere). Mercury's declination is close to L1-Venus' declination at 17°12' North.

Thank you for providing the chart for Mercury entering Leo.

In the chart where Mercury enters Leo, Mercury is at the ascendant, directly opposing Saturn at the descendant. Saturn, the coldest planet.

From heat to cold—aren't these the conditions for forming a tornado?

What an interesting case. Thank you, Jane.

This seems to confirm through astrology the confluence of the frogs to tornadoes or waterspouts with the power coming from Mars square Uranus which is also at 0.01 exaction to the square so at height of its power. No surprise to see Uranus in the Fortean Times. :-T
