Oriental means to rise before the Sun; occidental means to rise after the Sun. Draw an imaginary line across the chart from the Sun?s position. Planets that are ahead of it in the zodiac up to this line are occidental because they will rise on the ascendant after the Sun; those behind it in the zodiac up to this line will rise up to the ascendant before the Sun gets to it, so are oriental.

In this chart Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon and Mars are oriental; Mercury, Venus, Pluto, Neptune and Uranus are occidental.

The Sun isn?t labelled this way because it?s the body from which the definition is determined. The point of the definition is that it relates to whether planets are growing or receding in their cycle with the Sun.

Deb you might want to hold onto this chart and explanation, it is an exceedingly clear explanation of a topic that people dont always understand clearly. Very nice example and well stated.

Just a thought, Granny!
