Lahiri Mahasaya

1
Shyama Charan Lahiri, best known as Lahiri Mahasaya, was an Indian yogi and guru who founded the Kriya Yoga school. He was a disciple of Mahavatar Babaji. According to the book America's Alternative Religions by Timothy Miller, Lahiri Mahasaya's life was described in Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi as a demonstration of the spiritual attainment that could be acchieved by a householder "living fully in the world".

Lahiri Mahasaya was born on Sept. 30th 1828 in the village of Ghurni, which belongs today to the district of Nadia, West Bengal, 23°n24'23.04", 88°e29'30.12".
He left our world (Mahasamadhi) on Sept. 26th 1895 at 05:25 p.m. (time was recorded by the disciples who were present) at his home in Benares/Varanasi, Satyalok, Chousatti Ghat, 25°n17'55.5", 83°e00'30.0".

The problem is that we don't know the exact birth time of Lahiri Mahasaya because his Vedic Natal Chart had been cremated along with his body.

But fortunately there are some people who tried to figure out at what time (approximately) this great spiritual master was born. While doing my own research, I came across a blog article written by the Canadian Vedic Astrologer, Joey Bujold, titled: Unveiling the Mystic: A New Look at Lahiri Mahasaya's Horoscope (Pt 1).
https://www.joeybujold.com/post/unveili ... scope-pt-1

Bujold cites three publications that contain useful information on the subject.

I will take the liberty of repeating the quote from the third publication cited by Bujold here:
At the hour of 7 Danda 30 Pal (08 hours 27 minutes, 47 seconds IST) on the morning of Tuesday, the seventh day of the dark fortnight and 16th Aswin of the Bengali year 1235 (30th September 1828 A.D.), this Divine Child caused His Descent at village Ghurni.

In the course of his own analyses, Bujold comes to the conclusion that the time of birth cannot be earlier than 8:51 AM. He further writes: "I acknowledge that my mentor Visti Larsen also proposed a birth time of 8:59 AM in his forementioned published work as well, and the rationale for this will become clearer in the Navāṁśa reckoning, below."

I am extremely grateful to Mr. Joey Bujold for his own analyses on the subject in his blog, because they form the basis, the starting point of my own astrological analyses. Mr. Joey Bujold provides in his blog, by the way, also the information of the time of Lahiri Mahasaya's Mahasamadhi.

And at the same time I owe Mr. Cemal Çiçek a great debt of gratitude for his groundbreaking astrological discoveries and publications.
In this specific case, two publications by Cemal Çiçek in particular have helped me in my work:
  • The Signifier of Father (28 February 2020)
- https://ia802802.us.archive.org/3/items ... Father.pdf
  • The exact time of death and birth time correction (29 April 2018)
- https://ia801000.us.archive.org/22/item ... ection.pdf

Since exact information about significant life events is unfortunately largely lacking in the case of Lahiri Mahasaya, I haven chosen the death of his father as a life event. Firstly, there is a documented date with day, month and year for this significant event and secondly, the associated planetary picture seems to me to be better defined than is the cases with the other life events listed in Bujold's blog.

My own analyses have led me to the following conclusions:

Time of birth: 08:52:35 a.m.

Time of death (Mahasamadhi): 05:25:24 p.m.

I am by no means claiming that I have found out the "true" time of birth. I see my result more as a working hypothesis for further investigations. I would be delighted if other investigators cound find a "better" fitting time of birth.

Life event: death of father: 31 May 1852

Solar Return (Harmonic 64)

solar JU/NE (3°12'25") = natal JU/NE (3°11'10") -> deviation from exact symmetry - d.f.e.s.: 1'15"

Image

Lunar Return (Harmonic 1024)

lunar MA/SA (0°10'49") = natal JU (0°10'48") -> d.f.e.s.: 1"

Image

Secundary Progressions (Harmonic 16)

natal JU/NE (8°48'40") = secundary SU (8°55'14") -> d.f.e.s.: 6'34"

Image

Transits (Harmonic 16)

natal JU/NE (8°48'40") = transit SU (3°11'38") = transit JU/NE (14°19'58")

To check the degree of deviation from exact symmetry we have to subtract (or add) the next higher harmonics (square, opposition).
In this case:
Harmonic 32: 11°15'00.00"
Harmonic 64: 05°37'30.00"

8°48'40" - 5°37'30" = 2°11'10"
3°11'38" - 3°11'10" = 28" (d.f.e.s.)

14°19'58" - 11°15'00" = 3°04'58"
3°11'38" - 3°04'58" = 6'40" (d.f.e.s.)

14°19'58" - 5°37'30" = 8°42'28"
8°48'40" - 8°42'28" = 6'12" (d.f.e.s.)

Event: Mahasamadhi

Transits (Harmonic 64)

Note the reactivation of the significant planetary pictures that we could find in the natal chart, but this time accompanied by MAt/SAt (death)!

Secundary Progressions (Harmonic 64)

secundary KR/PO = natal AR = natal SU/PO = natal KR/PO = natal ME/PO = natal CU/PO = natal UR = natal PL/ZE

The chart of secundary progressions (event: Mahasamadhi) demonstrates very clearly and beautifully that Lahiri Mahasaya really attained enlightment. It also shows us the tremendous impact an contributions of this true yogi and saint to the world (see Aries Point!). The MA/HA midpoint symbolizes the serious sickness.

Thank you, Zachariel. Very interesting and informative about Lahiri Mahasaya. When I have time I'll study his natal chart. Which reminds me of a request when you or Cemal discuss harmonic charts. It would be VERY helpful if the natal chart as such with degrees in the chart was posted as a reference for us. In my opinion we always need to see the natal chart as a foundation for harmonics or other techniques.

Hi Therese,

thank you for your comment.

Do I understand you correctly that you absolutely want to have the degrees inside the horoskope chart (attached to the planets/transneptunians...)? I do not understand why it is not sufficient to position the degrees/minutes/seconds in form of a list next to the graphic? I have attached one graphic of my current post below, just for better understanding of my question.

In Microastrology, just as in Uranian Astrology, symmetry is key, and Cemal and I use a sequence of powers of two as the basis of the harmonics. In other words, we use circle segments with an angle of 360°/2^n. And when it comes to planetary pictures (equations) we check the amount of deviation from exact symmetry. ZET Geo is currently (unfortunately!) the only existing astrological software in the world that can manage the calculation of these harmonics based on 2^n beyond Harmonic 512.

Also to address your last sentence, Therese, just type in the dates below into your astrology software, whichever one you use (Solar Fire, Janus, ...):

Lahiri Mahasaya - Birth:

September 30, 1828, 08:52:35 a.m.
Ghurni, India, 23°n24'23.04", 88°e29'30.12"

Lahiri Mahasaya - Mahasamadhi

September 26, 1895, 05:25:24 p.m.
Benares (Varanasi), India, 25°n17'55.5", 83°e00'30.0"

I guess that your astrology software probably will not have listed in it's location database the village Ghurni. In this case you should choose the nearest location available in the location database, but alter the coordinates to the particular data values.

If you proceed in this way (birth-data entry), then you should get the result that you want. A circular chart graphic with degrees inside the graph, based on the results of my analyses.

In my case, working with Microastrology, I don't need such a circular graph showing degrees/minutes within the graph due to the reasons I have described above.
