all planets are contained within the approx 170 degree space from mars to pluto..

12th house ruler sun, is in a very close 120 to 4th house ruler jupiter.

the venus/saturn midpoint is at the ascendant axis.
the mars/uranus midpoint is square the ascendant axis
ascendant and midheaven ruler mercury is in a close conjunction to pluto - less then 2 degrees and under the suns beams..
sun is at the mercury/moon midpoint.

probably other astro observations i am missing i am missing.. it is largely a western hemisphere emphasis chart, which is considered more fated as i understand it.. exalted venus is the closest planet to any of the angles and rules the 2/9 houses.. uranus has just gone direct and is in a pretty close trine to ascendant from the 9th house using whole sign houses..

Hi James,

Thanks for posting the chart and your astro comments. I was surprised that the chart for such a tragic event didn’t seem particularly dire—especially in comparison to something like 9/11.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Preliminary reports indicate multiple contributing factors, including potential air traffic control (ATC) staffing shortages and flight path miscalculations. Investigators are reviewing flight recorder data to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.

Many analysts suggest that the probable cause involved a combination of aircraft misidentification, a failure in visual separation procedures, and delayed or unclear ATC instructions. If the helicopter crew mistakenly identified another aircraft as Flight 5342, they may have believed they were maintaining a safe distance when, in reality, they were on a collision course. The final ATC instruction to the helicopter may have come too late to prevent the crash.

Emerging details from flight recordings, a preliminary FAA internal report, and interviews with current and former air traffic controllers suggest multiple failures within the nation’s aviation safety system in the moments leading up to the crash.
(https://dnyuz.com/2025/01/31/washington ... ty-lapses/)

From an astrological perspective, this seems to be primarily a third-house issue—communication, media, technology, and infrastructure. Mercury, as the ruler of transportation and communication, should show signs of affliction or serious weakness, as should the 3H lord.

In the tropical chart, Mars, the 3H ruler, is debilitated in Cancer but receives a trine from Venus. While Venus is conjunct Neptune (introducing confusion), it is exalted, which somewhat mitigates the affliction. This suggests that Mars, despite its debilitation, may not be the primary indicator of the event’s severity.

Mercury, however, is much more clearly afflicted—conjunct Pluto, both combust as you noted. Yet, even this alone does not seem sufficient to account for the circumstances of the crash. The lack of a severe affliction to the 3H ruler in the tropical chart is perplexing.

Looking at the sidereal chart, however, things become much clearer. Here, Venus becomes the 3H lord, making far more astrological sense. Venus is conjunct Neptune, which clouds judgment and creates confusion. Additionally, both Venus and Neptune are tightly conjunct the North Node (Rahu), amplifying errors and infrastructural issues. This entire configuration (Ve-Ne-Rahu) moves into the 8th Whole Sign House, associated with accidents and fatalities, while opposing the Ascendant and the malefic South Node (Ketu). Ketu’s trine to Mercury-Pluto further reinforces the affliction.

Meanwhile, Saturn, ruler of the 6H (losses by fire), opposes the Ascendant, combined with the Ascendant lord, the Sun being afflicted by the 8L Jupiter, adding other layers of difficulty. [The trine from Ju as a functional malefic is not considered 'positive' to the Sun in Indian astrology.]

There’s always more to analyze, but these are the main contrasts between the tropical and sidereal perspectives.

Just a different astrological lens to consider it through.
Regards.

Taking a closer look at Mars in the Tropical chart, it appears to be doing a fair amount of work. It is partile sextile the Ascendant while applying to a setting Saturn in the 6th of injury and the military. Mars itself represents the military, as well as athletes and people working with iron; with, sadly, all three professions being represented by those who died: soldiers, figure skaters, and plumbers and pipe fitters. That both malefics were occupying water signs points to the presence of water. That it would be a public event is indicated by Mars in the 10th, and, as pointed out, it rules the 3rd, it is also in the 8th from its domicile and rules the 8th. As well it is sextile Uranus (unexpected) in the 9th of travel. With Mars in Fall and Saturn peregrine the likelihood of a harmful event increases. And Mars himself is a nocturnal planet, nocturnally placed in a nocturnal chart which increases his effectiveness, horrible as it was.

hi aj

thanks for sharing your unique and valuable astro insights! i meant to post the chart in sidereal as well, so i will do it here in my own format which hopefully compliments your chart..

regarding the importance of an emphasis on the 3rd house of the chart - that makes some sense, but i wonder if it is equally or just as important the ascendant in the chart?? in the tropical chart mercury rules the angles and is not in a great position in the natal chart.. it's an open question as it is only in retrospect that answers are sought to explain the tragedy.. short staffed, mis communication or lack of communication all make sense here..

i think the idea of accidents does apply to mars in general, but i like the case you make for the 3 rd house rulership of venus applying just as well, or better, if we put all of this to the 3rd house, as opposed to a reflection of the ascendant and etc.. an interesting midpoint which captures both mars and venus is mars-venus = uranus.. another one of interest i didn't mention is mercury-moon midpoint = mars via 135 aspect.. but i do think the mars-uranus midpoint square to the ascendant degree is quite relevant to this sudden accident coming out of 'nowhere'...

i lean heavily on midpoint analysis and have a reliance on midpoints... it is not everyone's cup of tea...

as you note, the chart doesn't immediately strike one as accident prone, or reflecting this type of tragedy.. perhaps the idea of air travel is a type of 9th house uranian thing.. i tend to think of it this way.. and although it is not an exact trine between the ascendant and uranus - it is a part of the picture.. the other interesting trine involving jupiter and sun also makes me think of travel... that these planets are trine one another would ordinarily be thought to be fortunate, but obviously not in this case... this implies something else in the chart dominated the event of the airline accident.. rulerships are an interesting emphasis, but of course it gets complicated with all the different house systems, not to mention the 2 zodiacs to consider as well..

i am sure the nodal axis proximity to the ascendant axis and the close conjunction of neptune to the nodal axis must be factored into all this.. i also note the fairly close midpoint saturn/neptune = ascendant axis...

i really appreciate your input aj! thanks..

Good point James to find
MA/UR = AS to describe an accident.

Another general perspective is the Moon separating from Jupiter detriment, mutable, cadent, Out of Sect... and SD
And applying by square to Uranus SD.

This suggest an event to break free, grow, and seize new opportunities (JU), like feeling confident in a wrong way with the celestial and terrestrial state of JU, and taking risks in unconventional or forward-thinking ways (UR SD).
Blessings!

thanks ouranos

here is another one - mars/saturn is at 19 taurus 08.. the moon is directly applying to this midpoint associated with accidents at 17 aq 33 - about 1 /1/2 degrees away by square.. the moon is in the 6th house by my house viewpoint too, so there is that..

jane!!

i missed your post when i posted mine and am only seeing it now.. i was called away with a phone call, and missed your post until now.. thanks for chiming in on this..

i think it is an open question what is the strongest factor feeding into this tragedy... a few things - i would view saturn as angular... i am not into this houses are boxes concept and never have been... when i see a planet so close to angle such as this with saturn about 4 degrees below the descendant - i associate it as angular - but that is me.... but if i was to say what is the strongest emphasis in this chart from an angular point of view it would have to be the nodal axis, with neptune exactly conjunct this axis and of course venus directly entwined with all this... i would say this configuration has the most power to act, as opposed to mars - which i don't look at as 10th house either, lol... but that is my own subjective orientation to the chart... i think a case can be made from either tropical or sidereal... but i think saturn, venus, neptune and the nodal axis are the most angular and most powerful planets in the charts.. thanks so much for your input!

jane: Just to be clear, I am only presenting an alternative perspective. I am unusual among astrologers in that I actually believe that both zodiacs are valid, and that's another conversation, but I do challenge in this case that the tropical chart does not clearly show the degree of tragedy of this event.

While Mars plays an active role in the tropical chart, its influence alone does not fully account for the complexity of this tragic event. The assertion that Mars is the primary driver of the accident overlooks other key astrological factors that provide a clearer picture of the event's cause. A closer examination of the arguments presented reveals several inconsistencies and weaker correlations when compared to alternative explanations.

First, while Mars is partile sextile to the Ascendant, a sextile is generally considered a harmonious aspect rather than a destructive one. Unlike a square or opposition, which introduce tension and crisis, a sextile often signifies opportunity or assistance rather than outright catastrophe. If Mars were the primary malefic responsible for this event, we would expect to see it in a more difficult configuration, such as a hard aspect with the Ascendant ruler or an angular house placement with severe afflictions. Its sextile to the Ascendant, while worth noting, does not automatically suggest disaster.

The argument that Mars applying to a setting Saturn in the 6th house signifies injury is reasonable but still not conclusive. While the 6th house is traditionally associated with illness, labor, and military service, it is not the primary house of accidents or fatalities. If Saturn were in its fall or detriment, this argument would carry more weight, but in this case, it is peregrine—meaning its influence is neutral rather than inherently destructive. More importantly, Saturn does not rule the 3rd house of transportation and communication, which would be a more direct indicator of an aviation-related disaster. The application of Mars to Saturn may indicate hardship, particularly for those in physically demanding professions, but it does not provide a singular explanation for the crash.

Additionally, while Mars does traditionally signify the military, athletes, and metalworkers—professions represented among the victims—this is more of a symbolic correlation than a direct astrological causation. Tragic accidents involving a cross-section of the population are not uncommon, and the presence of Mars in the chart does not necessarily mean it was the driving force behind the event. If Mars were truly the dominant malefic, we would expect to see it more closely involved in hard aspects with the chart’s key indicators of travel and aviation.

The argument that both malefics (Mars and Saturn) are in water signs suggests the presence of water in the event is intriguing but ultimately circumstantial. Water sign placements alone do not necessarily correlate with accidents involving bodies of water. If this were a strong predictive factor, we would expect to see the Moon—being the primary significator of water—playing a more prominent role in the chart, either through angularity or a direct hard aspect to malefic planets. In this case, the water connection seems more coincidental than causative.

While Mars in the 10th house does suggest a public event, this is not an unusual placement for a high-profile aviation disaster. Major air crashes are, by their nature, highly publicized events, so the presence of Mars in the 10th house is not particularly remarkable. A stronger indicator of mass visibility would be a prominently placed luminary (such as the Sun or Moon) or an angular ruler of the 3rd house, which governs movement and transportation. The assertion that Mars' presence in the 10th house alone signifies the crash’s public nature is therefore not a compelling argument.

The sextile between Mars and Uranus in the 9th house is also worth examining. While Uranus does signify unpredictability and disruption, a sextile is not typically an aspect associated with catastrophe. If Mars had been in a hard aspect to Uranus—such as a square or opposition—the argument for a sudden and unexpected aviation disaster would be much stronger. As it stands, a sextile alone does not carry enough weight to be the primary cause of the accident.

Finally, while Mars is in fall in Cancer, which weakens its dignity, and Saturn is peregrine, these factors alone do not necessarily indicate disaster. A planet in fall, or peregrine, is not automatically destructive unless it is also involved in difficult aspects or a harsh placement. In this case, Mars' fall is mitigated somewhat by its reception from the Moon, and Saturn’s lack of dignity does not necessarily make it malevolent. The presence of these planets in weaker dignities increases the potential for problems but does not definitively signal catastrophe without stronger afflictions.

Rather than Mars being the dominant factor in the event, the sidereal chart provides a far clearer picture, particularly with the afflictions involving Venus, Neptune, and Rahu in the 8th house of accidents and fatalities. In the sidereal chart, Venus becomes the ruler of the 3rd house, which governs transportation and communication. Venus is tightly conjunct Neptune, which creates confusion, lack of clarity, and potential misjudgments—key factors in an aviation accident. Furthermore, both Venus and Neptune are also conjunct the North Node (Rahu), which amplifies errors, miscommunication, and infrastructural failures. This entire configuration is located in the 8th Whole Sign House, which is directly associated with fatal accidents. This placement provides a much stronger astrological indication of the disaster than Mars' placement in the tropical chart.

Moreover, the Moon is applying by inconjunct to Ketu, the South Node, a classic indicator of loss and disruption. This further reinforces the idea that confusion, miscommunication, and unexpected circumstances played a major role in the event. Saturn, the ruler of the 6th house (which can indicate losses by fire or mechanical failure), is opposing the Ascendant, adding another layer of difficulty and reinforcing the overall affliction to the chart.

In conclusion, while Mars has some relevance in the tropical chart, its role does not appear to be as dominant or conclusive as some posts suggest. The sidereal chart provides a far more compelling and astrologically coherent explanation, particularly due to the direct afflictions to the 3rd house ruler (Venus) and key malefic placements concentrated in the 8th house of fatalities. While Mars' placement in the tropical chart does contribute to the overall picture, it is not the primary driver of the event. Instead, the sidereal Venus-Neptune-Rahu conjunction in the 8th house, combined with the afflicted Moon-Ketu connection, provides a much stronger indication of the astrological factors at play in this tragic accident.
Regards.

Hi there - I have posted the whole sign house tropical chart below. AJ uses the WSH system in his analysis and it's difficult to compare the tropical and sidereal interpretations when the house systems used are different.

The setting Saturn/Venus/Neptune/NN combination in tropical Pisces speaks clearly of death by water. Retrograde fallen Mars in Cancer trining this group adds further difficult symbolism. Mars, being retrograde, is applying to Saturn, ruler of the malefic 6th WSH. The ruler of the Ascendant and MC, Mercury, is afflicted by its conjunction with Pluto in the highly malefic sixth house. The Moon is separating from its recent conjunction with the Sun and is combust. Mercury combust is also lord of Fortune. Setting Saturn as the out of sect malefic opposes Fortune. Retrograde Mars in its fall rules the 3rd and 8th WSH. Sun in detriment is lord of the malefic 12th WSH from the 6th house. Jupiter in detriment rules the descendant and IC and Sun/Jupiter are applying to each other. Finally stationary Uranus trines the ascendant and sextiles the setting planets - a sudden event in this location.

If we use WSH and the tropical zodiac there seems to be plenty to describe the symbolism associated with this awful accident. However it is always useful to have a sidereal perspective for comparison. Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread.

The NM a few hours prior to the accident is telling. This occurred at 9 Aquarius. The planetary positions hardly vary at all but the angles and house cusps (using Porphyry) interact in some profound ways.

The following bi-wheel shows the crash chart on the inner wheel and the new moon is on the other wheel. Note that the NM 8th house cusp rises in the crash chart. The Porphyry 8th cusp is intensely malefic in my experience. Note also that the retrograde fallen Mars is placed on the intensely malefic 6th house cusp using Porphyry. This position at the NM aligns precisely with the crash Mars on the Porphyry 11th house cusp. The Aquarian planets move to the malefic 12th Porphyry house at the NM.

I think the WSH charts give a similar picture, but perhaps with a broader brush. The NM WSH 8th rises in the crash chart. The NM first house is in the crash WSH 6th and the NM 7th WSH goes to the crash 12th house. The 6th house Mars in the NM chart is in the WSH 11th (federal government institutions?).

Re: 2025 Potomac River mid-air collision

In Uranian astrology, Neptune is associated with airplanes, rather than Uranus. Neptune rules over the realm of air, fluidity, and movement, and it represents the atmosphere and all forms of transportation through the air, such as planes.

Conjunct Scheat (Mars nature) in the constellation Pegasus, we have seen a few airplanes incidents this week in Washington and Philadelphia including migrants sent back to their country in military airplanes. Trump making a show with his fascist theory!

The myth of Pegasus is tied to the hero Bellerophon, who rode the winged horse to defeat the Chimera. In ancient astrology, those influenced by this constellation might have been seen as capable of achieving great things, but also possibly prone to arrogance or overreaching, as Bellerophon’s story ended in his tragic fall when he tried to fly to Mount Olympus.

Just as the myth of Bellerophon ended in failure when he attempted to fly too high, ancient astrologers may have seen the influence of Pegasus as a warning about the dangers of hubris or overambition, especially if the constellation was poorly aspected in a chart.

Hi james, AJ ... thank you both for explaining your approaches to the event charts; I'll try to expand on my own thoughts re: the tropical chart (as I do think it adequately describes the event) by responding to a few of the points you each raised. Just as an FYI, I tend to rely on Zain's work for mundane matters and the outer planets.

James...
re: viewing Saturn as angular; I have found that planets in one house closely conjunct the cusp of the next house tend to act in the context of the house they occupy with that action influencing the house whose cusp they conjunct, especially if they occupy the same sign and aspect their dispositor. So here, I see Saturn indicating an event involving the 6th (Saturn in and ruling the 6th), 7th (Saturn conjunct 7th) and 9th (Saturn dispositor in 9th).

I agree that the nodal axis, especially as it occupies angles and critical degrees, emphasizes the importance of the event; it also emphasizes the connections between the three houses as it is posited in the 7th with Venus (ruler of the 9th) and Neptune (co-ruler of the 9th). Saturn draws in the 6th by its position. One signification of the 9th is interstate and international commerce and travel; the 7th's significations include, foreign nations, conflicts, and death (as the setting place); and the 6th, military personnel, injury. Neptune rules aviation and involved conditions (confusion). Venus, young women, Saturn loss. All these elements form components of the event. I don't; however, think these elements, by their nature, are capable of effecting the actual event that occurred which, by its nature, belongs to Mars (violence, accidents).

AJ...
I too, only meant to provide a perspective, a tropical one, as that is the chart I use. Nor did I mean to imply that Mars alone fully explains the event; I do, however, think he is the active agent in effecting the event.

As I mentioned above, I find planets in one house in close conjunction with house cusps, act through the house they occupy, to influence the house they conjunct. I have also found that planets in partile aspect to a house cusp take over the rulership of that house. That Mars is in partile sextile to the chart Ascendant means, to me, that Mars rules the Ascendant and therefore initiates the main event.

Admittedly, sextiles, along with trines, are generally considered harmonious; they imply ease, quickness, and a lack of resistance. In this case, as the planets involved are in bad condition and connected to unfortunate houses the 'harmonious' aspects are indicating the ease and quickness with which the event took place. It was a clear night, the two pilots could see each other's craft, there were no obstacles in sight and yet the accident occurred...nothing interceded to prevent it. In fact, what apparently caught everyone off guard was the total lack of tension and sense of crisis in the situation, which is what one would expect from sextiles and trines. The aspects here indicate the manner (easily or with difficulty) with which the event comes into play; it's the planet's nature, condition, and determinations that indicate the form the event takes and the effect it has.

Here, Mars is in his Fall (where his worst behaviours are encouraged). His condition is further worsened by his being retrograde, disposited by a USB Moon and by being out of bounds at 26N declination (adding to the oddity of the event); he also moving very fast although beginning to slow down which speaks to the speed with which the event happened; seemingly coming out of nowhere.

I don't quite agree with you that the Mars/Saturn trine "does not provide a singular explanation for the crash". Saturn harm Mars further by being cadent and a natural enemy. Saturn being peregrine indicates he has no authority, himself, to dictate the form of the event. I'm not sure I would call him "neutral". A peregrine planet, which lacks any dignity in its place, is like a stranger in a strange land, he is not familiar with his environment, has no friends, no resources, no authority. Most of the old texts consider such a state an impediment. Ironically, this might indicate the helicopter was at fault, being unfamiliar with the Reagan Airport environs, he gave Mars the perfect opportunity to effect an accident. Will have to see what the investigators learn from the black (Saturn) boxes.

You said "If Mars were truly the dominant malefic, we would expect to see it more closely involved in hard aspects with the chart's key indicators of travel and aviation." I would argue that he is very strongly connected to key houses: 3rd, 9th, 6th, and, most importantly, the 8th.

Mars rules the 3rd (travel) and is in the 8th (death) from the 3rd.
Mars rules the 8th (death) and is in the 3rd (travel) from the 8th.
Mars is sextile (2°) Uranus (extremes, the unexpected; he nearly always acts through some human agency) in the 9th (interstate traffic) supported by Mars trine Saturn in the 6th, the 9th from Mars.

The connections by aspect, rulership, and derived houses all emphasize the same places.

Agree that the sign placements are descriptive of the environment rather than predictive. Saturn traditionally has a connection to water (shipwrecks in particular) so his involvement may be more telling than the Moon's, although she does come into play by being Mars' dispositor, in a human Air sign and impeded (USB).

Uranus in the 9th does point to an unexpected event; it's being disposited by and sextile to an exalted Venus (ruler of the 9th) conjunct Neptune (aviation) in the setting place further adds to the suddenness and notably (Exaltation) of the event. And again, there is a connection between the 7th and 9th with Venus being in the 10th from the 9th increasing the likelihood of a public event.

I think we may possibly look at "Essential Dignities" from different perspectives. I see them as representing the amount of authority a planet has in its place along with the availability of resources and its skill in acquiring and utilizing those resources; the stronger the dignity, the more capable he is in effecting what he signifies. Whether his actions are destructive or not depends on the planet's overall condition and determinations; the aspects show whether they can act with ease or difficulty, with reception or lack of it modifying the intended good or malice. I don't see Saturn's peregrine state as neutral; he's connected to Mars who, as the nocturnal triplicity ruler of Pisces, has authority over him, and, being malefic and the pair enemies by nature, worsens his condition as does his placement in, and rulership over, the 6th and opposition to the 1st; whatever he's involved in will cause harm.

Nor do I think Mars Fall is mitigated by the Moon; the pair are averse and the Moon is damaged by being USB and disposited by a cadent Saturn in poor condition; she is more likely to harm Mars than mitigate his malice.

The sidereal indications you point to are interesting, in particular that the tropical 7th moves into the 8th and is descriptive of context in which the death occurred. While the tropical has Mars ruling the 8th (violent death) perhaps the sidereal exalted Venus points to the swiftness (and hopefully painless quality) of the deaths?
AJ wrote: In conclusion, while Mars has some relevance in the tropical chart, its role does not appear to be as dominant or conclusive as some posts suggest. Given the nature of the event (sudden, violent, travel accident) and Mars' tropical connections to the 3rd, 9th and 8th I have to think it is both highly relevant and a dominant factor in the event. Apologies if I missed something in reading your post but I'm not quite sure where the "violence" of the accident is indicated in the sidereal chart; are you positing it is shown by the nodal connections?

In the end, we both did come to a similar conclusion, if by different means: the 3rd and 8th houses are key determinants.

Hi Ed ... thanks for posting the NM chart. I re-calculated using Placidus to get the following:

While the 8th House is not rising in the crash chart (as it does with the Porphyry houses) the NM 1st house planets move to the 7th (setting place). In the NM chart Venus rules the 8th and Mars the 9th; in the crash chart, their rulerships are reversed, Venus rules the 9th and Mars the 8th. And Mars has moved from the 6th to the 10th and the partile aspect of the Asc. Plus, the signs intercepted in the NM chart are now on the Asc/Desc axis; as if the force of events (triggered by Mars) has brought their indications out.
