Re: Significators for sex workers

While sex work has a long history, and in some very specific situations, a small number of individuals might genuinely claim to "enjoy" or "voluntarily choose" this line of work, from a broader and more general perspective, the sex industry (or sex work) remains a high-risk, highly exploitative, and highly oppressive profession.

If we consider this from the lens of high risk, high exploitation, and high oppression, my thoughts turn to Saturn. Saturn represents limitations, trials, scarcity, responsibility, and the pressures of reality. Difficult aspects between Saturn and personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or the Ascendant/Descendant could suggest early life or long-term financial hardship, lack of opportunities, feelings of suppression, or being compelled to carry heavy burdens.

Other potential astrological configurations that might relate to such challenging life experiences include:

The 8th House, which deals with shared resources, debt, and crisis, where difficult placements could indicate vulnerability to financial exploitation.
The 6th-12th House axis, which touches on daily work, health, hidden enemies, and self-undoing, potentially pointing to difficult or secretive work environments, or feelings of confinement and suffering.
Venus or Mars under strong duress from outer planets like Pluto and Neptune. This could imply significant challenges in relationships, personal values, desire, or vulnerability to coercive power dynamics.

It's also worth noting that while sex work involves individuals of all genders, women sex workers do indeed constitute the majority globally. According to a 2024 report by the International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW), it's estimated that there are over 52 million sex workers worldwide, with approximately 41.6 million being women and about 10.4 million being men. This highlights a significant gender imbalance within the industry.

But yes, as you see, men are also involved in sex work.

Martin:
Will try to look for the relevant parts in Rhetorius and Abu Bakr later. Thanks for the reference.
Which sign (tropical) was Venus in? In the chart example you mention.
I also wonder, which houses Venus and Saturn rule in the chart?
Lecherous/licentious signs are bestial signs (ari, tau, cap) and Venus related signs (lib, pisc, tau again), as far as I can remember.

Ouranos:
However, not all readings were purely judgmental, some acknowledged it as a result of poverty, coercion or societal constraints.
Any examples?
About fixed stars: Castor as far as I know is more associated with Mercury, intellectual pursuits and horses, rather than with Venus.
Pollux Mars, yes.
Another star which may be connected to the subject is Zaniah at 4-deg of Virg, Adulteress or Harlot, according to some sources. Also some of the Stars in the constellation Andromeda (Ari and Tau). Maybe also Ras AlHague, alpha Ophiuchus, in 22-sag.
On a different topic. It is indeed telling, that Venus and Mars are of the night sect.

Tanit:
Nice additions,
Money is often an added factor in many of these charts. Good point.
Denise Richards' chart also makes me think that important planets to the matter at hand, in earth signs, can also be a factor. Combining sexuality with topics such as the body and financial well being.

Deborah:
Will definitely check Farnell's article, thanks for the tip.
The case history is interesting as well. Exalted Ven cnj domicile Jupiter, and Jupiter ruling the 10th, makes a lot of sense in such a case.
I used to listen to a podcast called Sex with Strangers. The author of the show is an American called Chris Sowa, and he travelled to different places in order to talk to people who are engaged in sex work. One of the more interesting episodes is the one about Australia, were sex work is decriminalized. Many of the participants in that episode present views which are rather similar to the woman you know.

That aside, many of the other episodes in his show present a side of sex work which is much more exploitative, violent and negative on the whole. So it's a mixed bag, and from a global perspective, I fear that the negative outweighs the positive. Although, it would be most fair to judge by a case by case basis.

Thanks for the Cardano's Cosmos reference.
This was an aphorism by Erasmus Reinhold, if I'm not mistaken.

To the rest of the responders:
Thanks for replying, didn't have anything in particular to add though.

This whole topic is partly inspired by a past client of mine, who I later discovered was involved in sex work, through a combination of bad luck and bad decisions.
Several years ago she had a boyfriend, who was later discovered to be a criminal and a pimp. That boyfriend manipulated her into prostitution by first convincing her to let him be her business partner, then leading her to a situation in which she owned him large sums of money, and finally driving and motivating her to that line of work, with the implication that she'll be able to repay him thus. Apparently he also had a financial stake in the place which she ended up working in.
She managed to escape it all in the end, although it's still a horrific story.

In terms of her chart, she has Uranus and Neptune on her rising in Cap, her luminaries are in Tau, Ven and Mar are in Pisc.

Prostitution was a known and often openly discussed aspect of life in the ancient world.

In the Greco-Roman world and in ancient Mesopotamia and India, prostitution was often seen through a pragmatic lens. It could be morally ambiguous, shameful, or even sacred, depending on the context:

Mesopotamian cultures had forms of sacred prostitution, particularly tied to temple rituals.
Greek and Roman societies often distinguished between different types of sex workers—ranging from high-status courtesans (*hetairai*) to brothel workers—with varying levels of social stigma.
In India, texts like the *Kamasutra* included detailed roles and lives of courtesans (ganikas) and offered nuanced views on their skills and social status.

Valens links Venus and Mars afflicted or poorly placed (6th or 12th) in a nocturnal chart or in conjunction with malefics (Mars or Saturn).
I would say that if you engage in this profession, better to have Venus and/or Mars dignified essential or accidental.

Castor has a Venusian nature (according to its spectral type) AO but overall the constellation is more of the nature of Mercury as you mentioned.
https://astrologyking.com/castor-star/
AO stars are a specific type within the A-type spectral class, characterized by their strong hydrogen lines, high temperatures, and generally bluish-white appearance and this color is more associated to Venus.

Best to you,
Ouranos
Blessings!

Tropically, Venus was in Aquarius, ruling the 3rd and 10th, while Saturn ruled the 6th and 7th.

Sidereally, Venus was in Capricorn, ruling the 4th and 11th, while Saturn ruled the 7th and 8th.
