Once again, I beg your indulgence for a newbie question. I was reading about combustion and find that it is seen as "weakening" planets,as in ability to act, makes them "hidden" from horary, or indicates (if significator is involved) that the person signified will not see reason. Also, if it is the querent, they will not accept the horary judgement. But how do you decide which one applies? In the following horary, the man,signified by Venus, asked "Has X forgiven me in her heart?" What is the most likely meaning of combustion here? Thanks.

I'm a newbie as well, but I think in this question the combustion maybe means they are both in a generally weakened state, although he is Venus in Libra and is stronger than her. I think the answer to the question is "no". The significators for man and woman (if we are using the 7th house for her) are both combust, in the 6th house, which is a weak and dark cadent house. The Moon in Cancer applies by a square aspect to first him, then her. I looked in my ephemeris and the Sun reaches Mars before Venus reaches the Sun, which i think maybe means that the Mars person (her) is still feeling very bad about whatever it is the Venus person did! Combustion has to be taken in the context of the question, so in this question the two people are being "burned". Mars looks like she is running away from the Sun but it catches her.

But this is only my guess and i'm not 100 percent sure...

My goodness, Tom, I went back and read the thread (five pages!) on combustion-no wonder you don't want to talk about it anymore. As you will remember, the discussion was very technical and philosophical, though for a newbie,not very practical.

I guess I am still somewhat undecided as to interpretation in this chart, but maybe the only solution is doing more charts and watching to see how they turn out.

Does anyone have any examples in their experience that are similar to the extant chart and question? What I am looking for is the influence of the rest of the chart, or we could say the background of the combustion, on how the combustion was interpreted in terms of a yes/no answer. I hope that makes sense as a query. Any help appreciated.

Pg 185 CA (this is confusing so pay close attention):

Moreover if the Significator of the Querent, or thing sought after (quesited), or the Moon (querent again), or a planet to whom she (Moon?) is joined, whether she is a Significatrix, or has participation in the Question, be joined to an unfortunate planet, viz, Retrograde, Combust, or Cadent, then observe if Reception intervene; which if there be, it signifies the perfection of the matter, though with weariness and much solicitation. If no reception be, the matter will come to nothing, though there have been much probability of its performance.?

As I was taught early on, ?Lilly is not Shakespeare.? If you?re old enough to remember diagramming sentences, try the first one. I understand those two sentences this way: if any significator, querent or quesited is unfortunate or joined to an unfortunate planet look for reception. If there is none, the matter will not come to pass. If there is, then the matter will come to pass with difficulty.

Venus is within the limits of combustion, but in domicile and receives the Sun into her domicile. Mars is seriously debilitated being both in detriment and combust, but Mars is in the domicile of Venus, the querent. I?d say she cares about him, or maybe feels powerless as he might be overwhelming her (Sun and his significator about to overtake Mars). Forgive? I?m not sure where to look for that. Is he asking if she will take him back? Then look for aspects and perhaps frustration or translation of light.

I think I'll go with a qualified "yes", if either can find the strength to act. The fact that everybody is crowded into quesited's 12th house worries me, and that Saturn is debilitated in the 5th,but aspecting the significators in Libra. It looks very iffy and weak, though. Anybody have a different take?
