Mercury represents my team (England) because Virgo is rising, and Mercury rules Virgo. The first house is given to the team that you support. Therefore, the opposition are the seventh house, in this case Pisces, so Ireland are represented by Jupiter.

Hi Harlequin,

It's usually only in horary charts that the Asc represents the team you support, i.e. "Will my team win?". In an event chart the Asc is usually given to the home team or the favourite or the team that initiates the game (in football that would be the team that kicks off - not sure how it works with rugby).

In this match Ireland were the home team (and I would guess the favourites as well). I've had a quick look at the chart and reckon the Moon in 10th shows the win for Ireland. I've found that to be a fairly reliable indicator.

Hi Ficina,

thanks for reminding me, you're absolutely right! I should have treated the chart as an Event chart but I interpreted it as an Horary chart. Strange then that if I had interpreted it as an Even chart, Ireland would have been given the Ascendant and therefore would have been shown to be about to be soundly beaten by England!

It's true that Mercury was in bad shape and Jupiter good. However, John Frawley has pointed out that essential dignity (or lack thereof) carries no clout in sporting event charts. This does seem strange, but I have to say my own experience of working with footie charts bears this out. He also says that combustion has no effect.

Jupiter did have accidental dignity in the 4th, but I've found the 4th to be less reliable than the other angular houses. In any case, it was trumped by the Moon in the 10th (the house of Ireland's "prize").

He (Frawley) also says that combustion has no effect


I've just been reading Frawley's "Horary Textbook" where he says, re sports and contests (page 205) that "House placement and combustion are the most important accidental dignities in these charts." Further down the same page he says, "Combustion being the most grievous of all afflictions, a significator combust shows a team will lose." Hmmm... curiouser and curiouser! :???:

Very curious indeed, especially given the result of that match :?

I got the info about combustion from a post on another forum which stated it came from JF's Astrologer's Apprentice (don't know which issue). Since the poster had translated it from Dutch back into English, perhaps that might account for the discrepancy :lol:
