I have a number of charts here from the past that I am trying to go over and make sense of, but i am having trouble with assigning a house.

Could someone tell me which house and planet would be the natural ruler of these vocations? I have listed what Ive been trying to use, but I am most unsure.

Charity work and fundraising (11th or 12th? and Jupiter or Venus?)
Social work and counselling (9th or 12th? and Mercury)
Nursing homes (6th or 12th? and Moon or Saturn)
Hospitals (6th or 12th? and Moon or Saturn)

Any help with this would be appreciated.

It depends what the question is as to which house we would use. A thing can be found in many different houses depending on what the question is and who is asking it.

If it's a horary on "Will I get the job?" for example, we would use the 10th house regardless of the type of vocation.

Perhaps you could post the specific question(s) you are looking at?

Keren, Thanks for your reply. They are vocational style questions, such as "Should I be a [eg social worker] ..." or "Would I be suited to the [eg nursing] profession? Would I enjoy a career in ... [eg. fundraising or charity? Will I become a ... [social worker]" or Would I enjoy working in... [eg. a nursing home]." etc. So they are not actually questions of getting a job, more of chosing a vocation. I have been under the impression that I would need to chose a house and its Lord, or a planet to signify the profession, and then look at receptions and aspects between it and Lord 1 and the Moon. I have done a lot of charts, but the 4 areas I listed crop up a lot. I am always very confused as to whether hospitals are 6th or 12th house. John Frawley says 6th, but I seem to have charts indicating 12th. I had had no idea where to put "charity" or "social work" or "counselling".

I have other types of questions relating to these areas, such as "Will my mother go to a nursing home" or "Is he in hospital" but I am concentrating on vocational questions at the moment.

Why not use 10th house to show the profession, no matter what it is? I'm assuming the questions are focused on one profession, eg. "How would I do as a hairdresser?" etc. Use the 9th to show the querent's knowledge of the subject(s) needed to succeed in the profession, 10th to show the actual work, and 11th the financial rewards.

Then we can start looking at natural rulers, e.g. in the hairdressing question, a dignified Venus on the Asc or in close trine to L1 etc would be a good sign, as Venus is natural ruler of beauty treatments etc.

Just a thought that might help simplify things.

Thanks Keren, some of the charts I can try that approach. Many however are asking about two professions, ie. "Should I do A or B."

That's a trickier one In that case yes, we need to find the natural rulers for each occupation and judge the question on their relative strengths.

The first thing I would do is look at L1 - what does L1 love, and what does L1 hate? E.g is L1 in major Venus dignities? In which case the querent may prefer a Venusian career. Then we would look to Venus and see if Venus was in positive dignities of L1 (mutual reception) - hence, would make the querent happy. So, if the question was "Shall I be a beautician or a soldier?" and L1 and Venus were in strong positive mutual reception, we would judge that the beautician career would be more rewarding than the military (Mars)!

If the querent is very concerned about the financial benefits of the job, we would also look at L2 and its receptions.

A general rule is that a debilitated planet is not good, unless of course it is descriptive of the career. So Saturn in Leo would be a bad thing in the chart "Should I be a beautician or a scientist?", but if the question was "Should I be a beautician or a vulcanologist?" we could see Saturn in a fire sign as being descriptive of the career

Also, be careful about planets about to change sign, or having recently changed sign. This includes the Moon (querent's emotions). Often these sign changes give a change of receptions, which can have bearing on the question. Eg. L1 and Venus in mutual reception, but Venus is essentially weak/in detriment etc., but Venus is about to change signs, where she will gain dignity - we could judge that a Venusian career is a good idea, although it will be hard going to start with, it will get a lot better.

Why not post one of the charts you're looking at? I'd be interested to see, and the method should hopefully come a bit clearer

Chart 24 June 2006 8:21 am Sydney, Australia 151e13, 33s52.

Question:
What would be a good vocational direction for me?

The main areas of interest I had when casting the chart were
1. Nursing
2. Design/fundraising for charity/welfare organisations
3. Psychology/counselling for welfare organization or hospital.

21 Cancer rises, conjunct fixed star Adara, but close to Castor in Gemini.

The querent is Lord 1, the Moon at 11GEM00 in the 11th house. It is conjunct Aldabaran, which brings with it the idea of a new start. (This makes sense as my career has been on hold while family matters have taken precedence and I feel I want to change career.)

The first thing I noticed about this chart is that the Moon and Mercury are in mutual reception by sign, with Mercury also receiving the Moon by face. Mercury is Lord 11. It sits in the 1st house on fixed star Procyon.

Fortuna is at 29GEM48 in the 12th house. I thought that didn?t sound promising, but then I noticed that Regulus was sitting on the 2nd cusp. That made me wonder if the position of Fortuna was descriptive. Fortuna is disposited by Mercury, Lord 11, again. I wondered if it was a reference to working in a public hospital, or some other place of confinement, or if a career in charity fell under the 11th or 12th.

The MC at 11TAU13, is ruled by Venus, dignified at 29TAU54, but about to change signs. I felt that Venus was descriptive of my previous artistic career, where Id had a lot of outward success, but I found it emotionally unsatisfying. The receptions seem to confirm this, as Venus (Lord 10) exalts the Moon (Lord 1) but the Moon after leaving its Venus dignities is now indifferent. Venus sits on Alcyone, the chief star of the Pleiades, the weeping sisters. Venus will be peregrine when it moves to Gemini. I wondered if it was saying there would be regret if I left the old career behind. Something that furthered that thought was Regulus on the 2nd cusp, but South node in the 2nd on the cusp of signs, having just left Venus dignities and moved into Mercury?s sign! This does seem to say something, but I don?t know what!

I decided to look for significators for the three careers of interest and chose to use Houses rather than Natural significators. I did this, because the moon, natural ruler of nurses already taken as Lord 1, and the other two careers seemed to be Mecurial so there was not a clear division.

Career 1: Nursing. - I took the 6th house to signify nursing, and noticed retrograde Pluto on the 6th cusp. Lord 1, the Moon receives Lord 6, Jupiter, into detriment, but it is in its terms. Jupiter is retrograde, has moved out of the 4th house, into the third, cadent. At 9SCO13 it is dignified by terms but receives Lord 1, the Moon into fall. Therefore Lord 1 and 6 are in a negative mutual reception, which does not bode well for the nursing career! Lord 6 Jupiter is also on the 4th cusp, the end of the matter. I don?t know what that means. Jupiter sits on the fixed star Nusakan, in the crown. The next house around would indicate money from that career, it is ruled by Saturn in detriment, but is accidently dignified in the 1st house.

Career 2: Fundraising/Design for charity organisation. - I took the 11th house to signify this? Lord 11 is Mercury in mutual reception with the moon. I saw that Venus is poised to move into strong dignities of Mercury, and I wondered if it was a hint to redirect my artistic (venus) abilities into fundraising.

Career 3: Psychology/counselling for welfare organization or hospital. - - I took the 9th house to signify this? Lord 9, is Mars. The next aspect of the Moon (Lord 1) is a sextile to Mars but There is no reception between them. As Mars is in the 1st house it may apply to skills already in my pocket, or something that would come to me. I did consider that it might be university training.

The main problem for me is that I am not sure which houses do rule these career areas.

I have also tried to use at Lillys methods for determining vocation in a chart, using Mercury, Venus and Mars as indicators of gifts.

Please help me on this one if you can!

Some other points I forgot to mention:

The prominent Mercury in this chart is both Lord 11 and Lord 12. The reason why I did assign it as Lord 11, is because its antiscion falls right on the the 11th house at 3? GEM, so I felt that was telling me it was 11th house. But it still could be taken as ruler of the 12th.

The 2nd cusp is on Regulus, but its ruler the Sun is in the 12th. The Antiscion of the Sun is conjunct Fortuna, near the 12th cusp.

The antiscion of the Moon [Lord 1] falls within 2? of the Ascendant. I dont know what that means.

Jupiter [lord 5 and 6] is beseiged. It is separating from a square to Mars, and further afflicted applying by partile square to Saturn, malefic in its detriemnt but accidently dignified in the 1st house. I know we are supposed to ignore the outer planets, but I have seen them used in a similar fashion to fixed stars, and they have prominance here. The antiscion of Jupiter is conjunct Neptune rx in the 7th, And Pluto retrograde sits right on the 6th cusp.

All this seemed like very negative testimony for the nursing as a career choice, and this was somewhat confusing as I had cast a previous chart with the direct question of "Should I be a nurse." That earlier chart seemed to indicate some positive testimoney for nursing with both a mixed reception and an aspect between Lord 1 and 6. But the Lord of the 6th in that chart was a debilitated Saturn conjunct Preassape, and this bothered me! What was interesting about the specific "Nursing" chart was that my significator again showed more interest in Mercury, Lord 11, again - and fortuna was in the 12th. I felt it may confuse matters to post both charts at once. But it does show the origin of the question for the broad vocation chart.

If you are not asking about a particular person or a particular house and you are required to make choices on your own. Pick L1 and trace its chain of dispositors. See where it ends and what it means.

L1 is Moon. Moon is disposed by Mercury in first house.

Fortuna is in 12th house of hospitals and is disposed by Mercury in first house.

Mercury is an individual. A asexual one. A messenger. It has no messages of his/her own. Just a communicator between the person who sends the message and the one who receives the message.

A nurse-more specifically a female- is an enigma (I am writing about females similarly male nurse are no exceptions). She is basically a communicator between a doctor and the patient. She gives medicine to the patients. She is at best superficially trained in all the disciplines of the medicine.

One does not call doctor or a lawyer as brother or sister. But one has to call Nurse as sister (denying her sexuality).

Luminaries in 11th and 12th house and Fortuna in 12th house suggest a career in counselling and in hospital but more especially in hospitals as Fortuna is in 12th.

Mercury in Cancer (with sextile with Venus—Woman) is a Mercury who will nurture but without any emotional relationship.

My choice of profession for this chart is nursing.

However, otherwise this chart is not helpful.

-Moon is not in an aspect with her dispositor.

-Moon separates from Saturn and applies to Mars (though it is a sextile aspect but still…)

Node, Fortuna and Venus are in the last degree and Malefics are in the first house.

I didnt think it mattered that the Moon and Mercury do not aspect each other as my question didnt ask for an event? I thought the mutual reception was enough, and that it was telling me to look at mercurial or 11th or 12th house professions?

That was one reason why my original question asked for some guidance regarding significators for these things:

I decided to ask about those areas in general, as quite often I have questions about hospitals etc, and it would help with other charts.

This chart is almost a year old.

When i first did this chart, I did look at that beseiged Moon, trying to use it as natural ruler of nursing (though the Moon was already taken as Lord 1). The beseiged moon is separating from malefic Saturn and applying to Mars, both aspects are sextiles, implying ease. Saturn as Lord 8, corresponds with the death of my father. To me Mars didnt seem overly malefic as hes a hot-dry planet in a hot-dry sign, so comfortable, though you could interpret it as too hot to handle! At the time the chart was drawn my mother was ill, and has since passed away. Mars is Lord 4 (parents,home, foundation) and could be taken as the family responsibilities (children, parents) that had put my career on hold. Jupiter [lord 5,6] opposing the MC also seems to attest to this. It is her turned 8th. This change, and group of experiences is integral to my thoughts of changing profession.

There is, however, a less malefic suggestion for that aspect between Mars and Lord 1 - I have enrolled at university, Mars is also Lord 9.

The chart seemed valid to me. It has the moon rising (the moon is Lord of my natal MC and 11th house). The Moon in mutual reception with Mercury seemed to make sense as well. When I worked through Lillys "Of the Magistry, Excercitation or Profession of the native", Mercury came up as the key planet there." Mercury in my chart sits in the 11th. It is Lord 9 and is disposited by a dignified Sun in the 11th. I mentioned specific fixed stars (Aldabaran, Regulus, Procyon and the Crown) as they have prominance in both this chart and my natal chart. I thought they may be significant.

I was referring to effectiveness of moon when she is in an aspect with her dispositor which is different from the arguments for perfection.

You have not told me what the querent eventually has decided?

And a little defence. I am more in favour of keeping analysis tools or astrology tools simple. For a reason that the more the factors for prediction are the more you would have dig out meaning when in reality the original factors were not supporting them.

With due apology to Maurice McCann, i dont seem to advocate the use of antiscia for a reason that it has been advocated for a simple reason that the chart in some cases is not responding and we tend to go deeper for reasoning. This, kind of muddles, the clarity of horary.

We cant have them all. Some answers would be wrong. We, have to accept this fact.
