This is my first post. Have just spent a glorious twelve or so hours revisiting one of my passions - horary through this wonderful site. I figured Horary wasn't for me when Saturn kept turning up or other strictures shutting me out so have left it alone for many years.

But I have a question that is of particular importance to me regarding consolidating our assets with the goal of retirement and when I drew the chart the Horary Ascendant was the same degree as my natal Ascendant emphasising that point. However, here's the rub. It's at 26 Libra with the Moon in 12th at 17 Libra....via combusta. Rats!

I notice through research that other Horary Astrologers will go ahead and read the chart anyway. But I'm not sure because of the unpredictable and probably detrimental outcome. I guess I can take heart than the 17 deg moon has a beneficial influence through the influence of Jupiter. But the 26 deg Ascendant would be under fiery Mars.

What do others think about my hesitation here or would you just take note of it and read the chart anyway? I know it's never a good idea for the Astrologer to be asking the question, and perhaps that's what's being emphasised here.

Of the Via Combusta Asc, Olivia Barclay says: This is not a stricture at all. You may go ahead and judge the chart.

I may do some Astro Fence sitting here and watch the input of others if you decide to post the chart data and Horary Question.

Is mars Fiery or wet? after all you are speaking of finances here and I do believe that Scorpio would be your second house cusp unless it is intercepted?

interested to see chart. also 17 Libra what? aligned with two different fixed stars at this time, Kraz and Seginus

Thanks for your replies Julie and Granny. Unfortunately, Granny, I've never heard of a "wet" Mars. Too long away from it all, I think. I also read on this site about a New Moon not being beneficial. The moon is this horary is both New and slow. I always thought the New Moon was "a new beginning". There you go......

Well, I could post the chart but I don't know how. But I could post the data which might be of interest to you. Erected on 14 Sep 07; 08:12AM; 145E56 17S56 Zone -10:00 NDS.

The questions I asked were:
Will we sell the land?
Will we sell the business?
Which will sell first?

Our Master Plan is to sell the land, buy another property in our retirement location, rent it out until the business sold, then retire altogether. Our current residence is not in the question because demand is outstripping supply in our area and so is of no concern.

When I study the horary it seems to be backing up what is going on in my life over the last few months.

The first thing I wanted to do was look for buyers and with 7th house Mars ruler sextiling our 1st ruler Venus and trining the Moon it looks like that there is a relationship. Perhaps it's a bit of a stretch but I thought Mars being in Gemini a bit of a bonus as we would be looking for two buyers in this scenario.

While we enjoy working in our retail photography business (10th Cancer-ruler moon-public) it's a bit low on generating much additional profit over and above an income. I notice that Saturn is in the business money house (2nd from 10th-11th) and we have overcome many obstacles, losses, and put in many hours to get this far. But all the same we love it (Venus in 10th). We don't really want it to sell before the land because that leaves us quite short on finances and we would have to find new work in our new location which would be no fun at our age. Buyer's Mars trines the 10th ruler moon which would indicate a buy option. "Cept when I go looking for money coming into our second house, there is no indication. In fact it all seems to go downhill from there. I find it difficult to ignore Pluto in the 2nd in opposition to Mars though even though traditionally the outer planets aren't included. Jupiter (my natal ruler) in the second of our finances with no aspect from the buyer though, could mean the opportunities are there but that the price of the business is too high.


Our large and unusual tract of land was purchased 3 years ago with the intention of building on it. Over time we have changed our mind and just before June "sold" the land to our Trust Fund. When it sells, the Trust Fund will keep the money which will only come to us on retirement. It is expensive, but unique with the only other property like it selling a few weeks ago. Notice that the 7th house Horary buyer is separating from a sextile to Saturn ruler of 4th. Looks like we just missed out on this one. . It's in this part of the reading that I'm a bit stuck. While it's probably "land" to the buyer, to us it's "unconverted money", or an investment. I can't really look at the 8th as a "Trust" because the property and the Trust are still ours rather than someone else's, and I thought of the 5th as an investment. This house's ruler Uranus is Rx and intercepted in the 5th in Pisces. An outer planet once again....so I don't know

I'm sure there's lots that I've missed here as I scramble around my foggy memory for answers. But it looks to me that the final result is a 1. NO, 2. NO answer. If you have any thoughts, I'd really appreciate them.

The word "strictures" was first used, I believe, by Barbara Watters, and unfortunately it caught on. The usual term is "considerations before judgment." I think "considerations" is far more accurate as it cautions the astrologer to be more careful, but I don't believe it prevents the astrologer from reading the chart. They are red flags not stop signs. After all the saying is, "As above so below;" not "As above so below every now and then."

"Being here (the via combusta-tc) does not make the Moon any weaker, but does distress it. This is primarily of significance in questions where the querent's emotions are important: the Moon's passage through the via combusta shows a period of unpleasant emotional turbulence. Note the Moon's position in the via combusta: is it about to enter it, stuck in the middle of it, or about to leave it? So, 'Will I be happy if I dump him?' with the Moon at 13 Libra on the point of entering this area of emotional turmoil: 'No' (although this in itself would not be the complete judgment)."

Okay so

When Moon was at 16 Libra, it was working on getting trine to mars. emotional about Money and partnership issues. But also yes new moon shows the beginning of things I find quite often. Also if you take 4th for land and 10th for business, would that not be moon for business and Saturn for land? suggests that business is Much more likely to seel quickly as the moon moves a heck of a lot faster than SAturn and it about to perfect with Mars.

Land on the other hand will not perfect for quite a while, which may cause you some consternation. Possibly there are things you can do with it while waiting for sale to maybe defray costs?

you Venus in 10th in your own terms are really in decent shape, And moon, business, and secondary representative of the querant is about to perfect a sextile to Venus, in Venus sign, so that too seems rather positve.


I dunno about the land deal, but the business looks to be a good prospect i should think.

Thank you Tom for enlightening me. I learned Horary over 20 years ago and my teacher practically folded her hands over strictures. So, we did the same.

And Granny, it was nice to share with you. I agree on reflection that the business will sell first which will create some retirement complications, but we can overcome that. Still studying that opposition 8/2 axis though. In reply to my own question re the land it really doesn't seem to matter whether I use the 4th or the 5th house given the Saturn ruler. My Venus is natally in Saturn so I'm quite comfortable with its "no hugging, no cuddling" let's get practical here and on with the job.

Granny, could you please tell me what a "wet Mars" is? I "googled" but couldn't come up with anything.
