Hi,

I'll do the almuten or almutem as it is sometimes called. Planetary hours take a bit longer to explain, and if no one does it before me I'll do that as I have time. I'm a bit tied up with family things at the moment and will be for a couple of weeks.


The almuten is the planet with the most essential dignity at a particular degree. It is usually but not always the domicile ruler.

Domicile = 5 points.
Exaltation = 4 points
Triplicity = 3 points
Term = 2 points
Face = 1 point

15 Scorpio
Mars 5 points for being domicile ruler
There is no exaltation ruler
Mars 3 points for triplicity ruler
Venus 2 points for ter ruler
Sun gets 1 point for face ruler

So Mars gets 8 points
Venus gets 2 points
Sun gets 1 point so Mars is almuten. In fact it is impossible for any planet other than Mars to be almuten at any degree in Scorpio

Lets put Saturn at 5 Libra in a day chart

Venus gets 5 points for being domicile ruler
Saturn gets 4 points for being exaltation ruler
Saturn gets 3 points for triplicity ruler
Saturn gets 2 points for being term ruler
Moon gets 1 point for being face ruler.

So Venus gets a total of 5 points
Saturn gets a total of 9 points
Moon gets 1 point.

Saturn is almuten of 5 Libra in a day chart.

In horary almuten is not often used, but it could be useful if one planet ends up being the significator for the querent and quesited and one of the degrees has an almuten different than the domicile ruler. Dorian Greenbaum uses it in her formula for determining temperament. It isn't often used in Western astrology, but that doesn't mean it can't be used or that it shouldn't be explored. If the almuten is a planet that has more essential dignity than the domicile ruler, like Saturn in early Libra, then use it in lieu of the domicile ruler and see what if anything changes.

Is a planet Peregine when it has Received Dignity but apart from that it has no Essential Dignity.

I'd say NO.

Planetary hours - I divert from the traditional concept of planetary hours. When I cast a chart I use Regiomontanus houses. That is a space-based quadrant system. In my mind, the application of planetary hours should agree with the house system. Mixing systems makes no sense. Planetary hours are traditionally based upon an equal division of time - and are therefore time-based, like Placidus. In my practice of astrology I use space-based planetary hours, which agree with my house system. This is simply done by observing the Sun's motion through the houses.

In example, the 8th hour on Thursday, the day of Jupiter, is ruled by Jupiter. The planetary hour is defined by the Sun's motion through the first half of the 9th house. In practice, the planetary hour according to a time-based, placedian system could be that of Jupiter, but the Sun could be in the 2nd half of the 8th house according to Regiomontanus. My argument is that the planetary hour should agree with the location of the Sun by house and the correct hour would be that of Mars.

Ideally, I would like a computor program that bisected the houses according to the house system of my choice, i.e. Regiomontanus. This would make the it easier to observe the change of the hour when the Sun is mid-house. But just a planet can the on the cusp of a sign or cusp of a house, I reckon the same rule applies to being on the cusp of one hour leading to the next.
