Can some one please shed light on which house we need, to find out whether a ten to twelve year old will pass their examination?

Generally, we look to ninth house for "higher" education and third for "Primary" education. But how to answer a question by, say, a parent if their child would pass the examination?

Is it the 10th of honours? Or Second (profit) from the 3rd or 9th depending on whether one is considering primary or higher education.

Actually, I was asked this question by a father whose son sat in the 11 Plus exmination and was worried if his son had done good enough in the first of the two part papers to stand out. (by the way, the question was not whether the child would pass in the final analysis (two exminations taken collectively) but whether he would obtain enough marks in the first part of the exmination)

Any help would be highly appreciated

Simply use derived houses. If the the father is the Querent then he gets the first and you start counting the house of education (the adequate one) from the house that belongs to children. Now, generaly, children are presented by the 5th house (so, if you're interested in the 10th house of the Querent's child, it would be the 2nd). Though, of course, some Astrologers might suggest that in a chart of a male Native (or a male Querent), the 5th house is not the only choice of house for a child. I'm only mentioning this because I'm aware there are different approaches! It is up to you to chose the house of children you would usually look in a horoscope of a man and count form there.

Thanks for your post and appologies for this longish post.

You are very right, we have to use derived houses. So 5th to signify the child...so far so good.

But what I am requesting members of the this forum to comment on is which house (from the 5th), we should take to show whether the child would obtain enough marks to pass (satisfactorily, which is what the father wants to know) the examination.

Here, there are some options.

To show result of the exmination, we use the 10th house of the child, which is the second house of the radical chart (showing resources/profit of the derived 9th house)

Or we use the 4th house of the child, which is the 8th house of the radical chart (showing resources/profit of the third house of the child, given this question is about passing an examination at the primary/early secondary level.

So are we better of using 9th house of the child or 3rd house of the child to reach the house of his early education and then look for reward (from the second) of either this derived 9th house or derived 3rd house.


May I request Deb and other senior respected members to please comment because in classic or even modern books, we don't find how to distinguish between passing an exam at the primary/very early secondary level. Although most agree that higher education is in 9th but what about an examination/degree....which house to see.


In vedic astrology, they use every possible house for this purpose...Second for oral eduation, third for day to day education, fourth for what is taught in the home or by family, 5th (general intelligence), 9th for all kinds of education and so on. This may tell us how good or bad education overall would be. What about a particular question at a particular stage about passing an examination.

Somewhere I read log ago that certificates or degrees (reward of education) are in the 2nd house. Why...becuse some higher authority (10th house) would porpose/plan/create the degree, all of which three are in 5th house of the chart.

A noted Indian astrologer uses 4th house to show degrees/certificates (essentially passing the exams) from this house because of his "personal experience and as suggested by sages".

So all this is, in my view, worthy of some debate.

Question asked in east London [Lat 51, 33 North, Long 0, 05 East (at 1314 Hours) on Dec 13, 2008. Regiomontanus Houses.

Question asked by (a very disturbed father) was: Will my son (ten PLUS years old) obtain enough marks in this first of the two part 11 plus examination to stand a chance to qualify.

For those who may not be fully aware: This examination is held in two parts and results are combined. Out of thousands of students only top 120 are given places in the grammer school for which they have appeared in the test. So if a child even does better in either of two exams (assuming they have done slightly less good in the other...which was the case of the child here, you can still qualify).

Can I also add, the father was confused (as was the child, otherwise a brilliant student but came out crying not knowing at all whether he had answered the question right. The child actually had left about five questions unanswered due to time constraints [a negative in these tests] and was unsure about the answers of some of the questions he had given. He had done two other parts of test OK.

The father did not ask if his child would eventually qualify. He only asked if the child had done well enough in the first part to stand any chance.

Here Ascendat was Aries 26 deg. The child was in 5th cancer (25th deg), Moon in Caner 4th deg) and in the radical third house of joy.

Now if examination result is in the 10th house of the child (radical 2nd), its lord was Mercury in the Radical 9th (cadent and shorn of any dignity)and the Moon had just separed from an opposition from it.

If the examination result is in the 4th house of child (radical 8th), its lord Jupiter is in Fall but right on the Cusp of radical 11th house. (essentially weak but accidentally OK or a bit better. Moon in Cancer is eventually to oppose this jupiter. So not very encouraging apparently.

Mercury the general signifcator in this question is not in good shape either.

If there is any other house to look to, please write.

So has the child done OK to qualify in this particular examination

I'm really sorry I don't have time to look at this. Also, I don't think it is a good thing to name members of the forum and ask for their specific help. You have to remember that this is a forum for open discussion. Also, it can be counter-productive, because someone else who might have been willing and able to contribute feedback might not bother if they see that someone else has been asked to do that.

Why I mentioned some is only because I thought this issue could generate more interest and debate with their response. I do believe some of us know better than some others because the former have read more and have had more experience than people like me who may not have read as much.

As with most horary questions, it's all relative...

You are right to look at the 10th for "honour and preferment". However the question remains, should we look at the 10th, or the turned 10th?

My opinion is that if this is a very important test, the result of which has a large impact on the life of the child (perhaps to get into a specific school etc), then we would use the 10th as it is, and not turn the chart.

If however the test is not so important, we would turn the chart and look at the 10th from the 5th.

From your posts, it sounds as if the test is very important so I would look at the 10th itself. Ideally we would see Lord 10 in positive aspect and reception to Lord 5, showing that the child has achieved well. We only need to look at L5 and L10 here, to answer the simple question of "Has my child done well in this important test?" The strength, quality and position of L10 and L5 will answer the question.

In fact the question the father is really asking might well be simply, "Will my child get into a good school?" Again this puts me in mind of the 10th, because this is just like asking "Has my child won the prize?"

Many thanks for your detailed (and methodical) post...It makes things quite clear.

Given the urgency of the fahter, I had to come up with what I thought of the answer so I did give one...in which I considered both the radical 10th (as you wrote) and the turned 10th just to see if there were any supporting [or conflicting] testimonies.

I wish you had the time to look at the chart itself and written what you thought of the outcome but still I am very grateful to you (and aglaya too) for your responses.

As you have yourself mentioned, in vedic astrology we use 4th house for academic education upto high school level, then 9th house for higher education .
