The Icelandic people don't consider the Eyjafjallajoekull to be particularly dangerous. No hurry to evacuate and we can pronounce it slowly and let the matter sink in. While KATLA! is an expression that demands immediate attention. It probably means something like RUN FOR YOUR LIFE - LEAVE THE CAT!!

With Eyjafjallajoekull the Icelandic people have time for a sing-song.

Eyjafjallajoekull, e-i-e-i-oh :???:

or try singing it to 'What a Difference a Day Makes'
or 'It's the Final Count Down'
At least I have no problem in remembering the name of the volcano after that.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE - LEAVE THE CAT!!
Never leave the cat. The spouse, yes; the children, sometimes; but the cat, never ever!

Seriously, though, I noticed that on Thursday the word 'unprecedented' was used to describe both the big events in the UK, the flights shutdown and the first televised election debate. I think this is an opportunity. Given that they occurred on the same day, they must have the same symbolism more or less and we must be able to work out not just the events but the timing ,to the day from the London Ingress chart. I don't have much experience in Ingress chart timing, so over to the experts.

Andrew Bevan wrote:It is rather interesting to see how Neptune is on the cusp of the IC in the chart initial eruption. The 4th house represents 'Products of the Earth' and with Neptune in the Air signs Aquarius, the 'fog' or rather smoke and volcanic ashes of the volcano has been spread through the air and paralyzed air traffic in Europe. The fact that ice from the glacier (Neptune) has been melting and running down into the volcano in this weeks eruption has been adding to the creation of volcanic ashes. Saturn, Lord of the 4th, in the air-brigde Libra, and who is in a state of destruction due to the opposition to the Sun, is also relevant.
Good that you mentioned Neptune, Andrew :' . Looking in the sky I didn't see anything spectacular like a dark cloud, only the blue sky. This morning I read an explanation on how the ash disturbs aviation. Although thinly spread the ashes getting in the planes' turbines might get heated and change into a sticky mass so that the planes must slow down. Furthermore the high speed of planes would make the 'innocent' ash like 'sand blasting' the planes' windows.

Now I was thinking of something 'invisible' yet affecting us and I came to the planet Neptune which symbolism seems to fit, and indeed on cusp IV in the starting chart. Note further that Uranus and Neptune are in semi-sextile aspect this week. Perhaps a weak or even no aspect at all, however an interesting coincidence. Saturn Uranus is moving to an opposition and Saturn Neptune inconjunct a bit later. An 'invisible' and apparantly non-direct hindrance with a possible stronger than expected impact on our momentary weak economy?

Its tricky to follow up Amelia's suggestion of working out an exact timed prediction from the Aries Ingress Chart. Not least as it occured on the same day as the initial eruption!

I have put up the Icelandic Aries Ingress chart below. In addition I have posted a pre-lunation chart for the new moon prior to the first eruption. In the Icelandic Aries Ingress chart the Sun, Mercury and Venus all fall in the 8th house and are all disposited by Mars (whole sign or intercepted sign ruler). The Moon is within fixed orb of the MC. Something not seen in any other european charts I have looked at. In terms of fixed stars the MC is close to the Pleiades. The Mars like association of these stars fit the symbolism of the Volcano eruption very well.
Image
In a new moon chart the POF is obviously on the ASC as always. However, the dispositor of the POF here is Venus which is in detriment and is Lord 1 and 8. Venus is in direct opposition to the ascendant /POF. Despite its lack of dignity Venus is angular as is its dispositor Mars which is in the 10th house. The South Node is close to the MC. By zodiacal projection the MC is on the fixed star Sirius ( known as the 'the scorcher'). In a chart cast for the location of the Volcano the nodes are much closer to the MC/IC axis. Maybe a clue if we are checking out chart for a possible eruption of the neighbouring much larger Volcano Katla?

I thought it would be interesting to look at the pre-lunation chart for the second eruption. I think I am correct that the new moon on April 14th preceded the second eruption?

Here is that pre-lunation chart:
Image
Mars is in the first house (whole sign). Mars, the ASC , POF are disposited by the exalted Sun in Aries. Mars is the dispositor of both luminaries by whole sign. By sign division ( Placidus) it is also the house dispositor of Venus and Mercury. There is a liberality by reception between Mars and the Sun. Mars is also domicile ruler of the MC and trines it. Mars is strongly out of sect (day chart, above horizon and in masculine sign). By essential dignity Mars is peregrine and in the decan of Saturn.

One notaeble feature is that the MC rulers (Mars) is close to the malefic cloud like cluster in the constellation of Cancer known as Praesepe ( 'a multitude') . It is of the nature of Mars and the Moon according to Ptolemy.
This is regarded as a dark, feminine area and like all nebulous clusters its influence is associated with weakness, blindness and sickness, especially when the luminaries or malefics fall upon them. Ptolemy notes the influence of Praesepe as like Mars and the Moon. Lilly noted a great danger of accidents, burns, violent death, afflicted eyesight and lawsuits when the Sun was directed to these stars. (Deborah Houlding)
I had been thinking of making a prediction about something dramatic happening when Mars got close to Praesepe. Although in general terms it could just as easily fit something like a terrorist bomb. Anyway, its just another retrospective astrological comment now. I do plan to watch out for the malefics or debilitated planets on malefic fixed star degrees close to the ecliptic in future.

Eclipse charts should be checked when studying this sort of work.

Annular eclipse, 15 January 2010, 07.12 GMT Reykjavik:
Sun/Moon 25CP01 Asc 2SG05 MC 22LI28 ME 5CP33!!

Total solar eclipse, 11 July 2010, 19.42 GMT Reykjavik:
Sun/Moon 10CN24 Asc 3SG28 MC 25LI06

The angles are similar in both these eclipse charts and its interesting that the Ejyafjellajoekull most recent eruption came on the night to 14 April with the Sun 24 Aries. However, the annular eclipse of 15 January 2010 belongs to the Saros 12N (141 Espenak), which was initiated on 19 May 1613. I'm posting that chart:

Saros Series 12N (141)
Image

How interesting that this eclipse occurred in the 29th degree of Taurus, which is the same degree as the Moon in the chart for when Ejyafjallajoekull first moved on 20 March. Saturn, lord of the 4th is in a tight aspect with the Eclipse in the 8th. It's interesting that Venus, Lady of the Eclipse, is in the degree of the Dragon's Head. Mars in this chart is culminating in the 30th degree of Cancer. The eclipse is on the Mars/Saturn midpoint. The Midheaven is 3LE17 - which currently is frequented by transit Mars, and PLUTO is 5TA51 (square Midheaven). This is trine stationary Mercury in the annular eclipse chart from 15 January at 5CP33, but notice how TRANSIT PLUTO was 5CP50 in the chart of 20 March (MarkC's initial chart in the thread) and 5TA21 is on the descendant.
-----------------------------

Nice job, MarkC! I notice how your recent chart shows the lunation hitting the IC in the current eclipse charts, and the midheaven at 8AR29 agrees with a degree I've been picking up on in earlier work. :'

Hi Andrew,

I take it you dont hold to the view that solar eclipses are only astrologically significant across the eclipse path where they are visible?

I know we have some members who hold that view. I dont personally have enough experience of mundane astrology to have a firm opinion. Still, my experience of natal astrology makes me think they are still operative even when not visible from a location.

Good question - but no, the location does not have to lie in the eclipse path to be astrologically significant. Eclipse paths are significant, but not necessarily in the way we think. I do have examples. The initiating eclipse to the Saros cycle should be looked into and compared against location and the current eclipse. However, every saros cycle is initiated with a minor partial eclipse occurring at either pole - no eclipse path what so ever. The Saros series is labled N or S according to whether the eclipses are occurring at the Moon's North or South node. The partial phase develops for some time before the total eclipses begin to appear. Then the saros cycle culminates before the eclipses start to shorten and drift out on the opposite pole. We should be doing more work along those lines.

Now if some people prefer to specialize into that phenomena that occurs under the path of the eclipse that is fine by me. We need to gather all the material we can get hold of.

However, the eclipses were not the deciding factors in leading us to cottoning on to the volcanic developments on Iceland. This was taken from the national chart of Iceland and the recent seismic developments in Haiti and Chile. It seems to have to do with hooking on and adding up on several things going on at the same time. Out of interest there was a significant earthquake in Mexico on 4. April, which was 9-10 days ahead of the key date of 13. April. This seemed a little 'off target' but still within orb as the 'crust of Capricorn' was the target for 13. April. The earthquake in Mexico was like a marker or a flag leading in the direction of something else. Now, in my opinion, the next interesting key date is 24. April, which relates to a 5 week direction from 20 March and that coincidentally also is 9-10 days after the key date of 13. April. I could be wrong, but this is the way my mind works.

Katla is, by the way, the name of a female dragon that breathes fire from its mouth in the story of 'The Brothers Lionheart' written by Astrid Lindgren.

Thanks Andrew,

By the way I notice there are two national charts for Iceland.

In the National Chart for Iceland thread Deb wrote:
Two dates are given for the independence of Iceland from Denmark, both of which may be the basis for a national horoscope. Legal sovereign independence was granted on 1 December 1918 [chart set for Rejkjavik, 12 noon (Wat +1 hr); ascendant= 21Sag 15] ?.The second date is that for the severance of all links with Denmark and the proclamation of a republic on 17 June 1944 at Rejkjavik ? the Republic formally inaugurated at 2:00 pm (WAD + 0hr / 02 Libra 13 rises).
Which chart does your research indicate is most responsive to astrological effects? Or do you work with them both?

The 1944 chart does seem to have a lot going on just now just looking at transits with Saturn conjunct the Iceland 1944 chart Neptune/ascendant and Mars in conjunction to the 1944 chart Pluto. There also seem to be a lot happening by secondary progression and solar return.

steven wrote:. Its also relevant when the rulers of the eclipse (ruler of the ascendant of the eclipse chart and ruler of the lunation) falls in the angle of a nativity or mundane chart. Especially the ascendant I might add.
Just I want to say that rulers of the eclipse are not necessary the ruler of the synod or the ruler of the Ascendant. This is the Arab way to judge the eclipse, but many authors like Cardano or Lilly followed Ptolemy. And Ptolemy in the second book of Tetrabiblos says that we should take the ruler of the synod and of the following angle.

Since Ptolemy says that the eclipse should be visible, ie between the Ascendant and Descendant, the following angle can be the MC or the ASC, as Lilly explains below.

A couple of years ago I had some quarrel about this with a self appointed expert of Cardano (in Italy expertise should be recognised by others so I was a little disconcerted), who insisted and insisted about the ruler of the Ascendant.

It's not like that: Cardano explains very well, with examples, how to judge an eclipse in his Comment to Tetrabiblos.
And the same Lilly, this is from An easie and familiar method whereby to iudge the effects depending on eclipses, either of the sun or moon. By William Lilly student in astrologie (London: printed for the Company of Stationers and H. Blunden at the Castle in Corn-Hill, 1652).

And Tycho Brahe in judging the stella nova, casts the chart for the new moon preceding the sighting which falls in the 5th house and then mentions the following angle, the Descendant.

This was a very common method between astrologers, as the alternative one you mentioned.

For me, I check both, I don't have any preference between Albumasar and Ptolemy.

Katla eruption

23
I've been trying to pin a time on possible Katla eruption. I was aiming for uranus conjunct IC.

The nearest town is Hvolsvollur but Katla is half a degree or so out. I used astrodienst as I don't have software to draw charts up just with geographical ref.
From what i can see, Katla is 19.05w and 63.63 so this chart is not entirely accurate, but I wouldn't want to be in Hvolsvollur on Monday 19 Apr at 11.30 pm ...

Moderator note: I have taken the liberty of deleting your astrodienst chart and inserted a new one as it was too wide for the normal format here. You will see the coordinates I have found are slightly different from those you provided.

Just I want to say that rulers of the eclipse are not necessary the ruler of the synod or the ruler of the Ascendant.
I'm sure you'll be glad to know thatMorin agrees ;-). But his method is similar to finding the Lord of the Geniture in a nativity. He looks for the strongest planets that, ideally, are connected to the eclipse or in an Aries Ingress, to the Sun. The Sun is always exalted in an Aries Ingress chart and Mars always rules it, so we look there, and if Mars is strong, he would be at least one of the rulers. In the 2010 Aries Ingress Mars is trine and in mutual reception with the Sun, so he must be considered one of the rulers, and there may or may not be others. The idea seems to be to locate the planets that are strongest and therefore will exert the most influence in that chart.

The problem with hard and fast rules, e.g. always use the ASC ruler or always use the domicile ruler of the solar eclipse, is that the ruler may be weak and ineffective and if other planets are more influential, we miss a lot by sticking with the domicile or ascendant ruler for that matter. They should never be ignored, but there may be other places to look for information.
