Mark has asked for some mundane predictions. I make two here. They are buried in Part III and involve Ariel Sharon and Civil Unions legislation in the United States. I devote most of this and the next two posts to delineation, because as my teacher Robert Zoller said delineation always precedes prediction. So here goes:

Jupiter-Saturn Opposition ? Part I - Background

The objective of this series of posts is to comment on current mundane events tied to the upcoming series of Jupiter-Saturn oppositions and to make some forecasts on events yet to occur. In particular, I wish to make the case that horoscopes calculated for the exact moment of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction have predictive ability even though the original methodology was developed on an idealized cycle.

As has been noted on other threads, the technique of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions in mundane astrology was developed under the Sassanid Empire and made its way to the Arabic Medieval period following the rise of the Abbasid Dynasty and the House of Wisdom. The technique was given its fullest treatment by Abu Ma?shar in his Book of Religions and Dynasties which was published in English translation for the first time in 2000.

Because of inaccuracies in measurement, the actual date of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction could not be computed, as a consequence astrologers relied on the Aries Ingress for the year the conjunction was expected to occur. This has been commented on a number of times in other threads and was a well known limitation of the technique in its day. In a thread which I remember but couldn?t locate or I would have referenced it here, Steven Birchfield quoted a passage from Kusyan Ibn Labban?s Introduction to Astrology where Labban recognized the limitation of a mundane astrological technique which can?t be precisely defined, but given his respect for the Persians, was willing to entertain the idea.

There are at least two big differences between the idealized cycle presented by Abu Ma?shar and the actual series of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions when computed by anyone with modern astrological software. First is that unlike in the idealized cycle where there is a logical and sequential flow of JSCs from one triplicity to the next; in reality transitions are not as clean. For instance, the 1980/81 JSCs were the first in the Air triplicity, but in 2000 we went back to Earth. 2020 will be Air again. So have we made the changeover to Air as defined in the 1980/81 JSCs? Or have we gone back to earth? Or are we living in a mixed time period?

If one considers the basis of the JSC model is that the conjunctions show the rise of religious prophets whose movements spread and ultimately give way to political change, then we can ask ourselves have any significant changes in religion occurred following the 1980/81 or the 2000 conjunctions? Perhaps a topic better for the philosophy forum, I would nominate the rise of Islamic Jihadism as a ?new? religious movement stemming from the 1980/81 conjunction (even though the Iranian Revolution slightly preceded it). Jihad is given by Mars-Jupiter combinations. It occurs in the 2nd of 1980/81 JSCs, March 4, 1981, 3:08 PM which includes Mars/Pisces conjunct the Jupiter/Saturn/Libra conjunction by antiscia. I have also seen Mars/Pisces as a universal significator for martyrdom operations of all kinds. It is included in a number of notable nativities including the current president of Iran. Also the speculative birth date of March 10, 1957 for OBL has close ties to the March 4, 1981 JSC with OBL?s Sun falling in the bound of Mars/Pisces. Another recent example is the birthchart (no time) for the Christmas 2009 ?crotch bomber? whose attempt was unsuccessful ? this guy actually has a Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Pisces.

As I have just alluded to, the second big difference between idealized and actual JSC cycles is that because of retrogradation there may be more than one conjunction (as in 1980/1981). It applies to the current case because in the next year we will have three of them. Perhaps because of this additional confusion of multiple conjunctions (and squares & oppositions) one reaction is to go back to the idealized cycle because it avoids this kind of messiness. And I am not one to fully dispute the ability of the idealized cycle to time changes in religions and dynasties which is what was designed to do. My only point which I would like to make in the next post is that the figure for the most recent Jupiter-Saturn conjunction computed for May 28, 2000 does appear to have empirical validity; accordingly, we can use these actual computed JSC dates in addition to JSCs computed using the idealized cycle.

Wrapping up this post

I have mentioned religion, not that I am going to get into that subject in great detail, but because if one aims for success in applying this method, one has to go there first if one is to respect what Abu Ma?shar was writing about (I might add he intentionally started his book with the topic of identifying the birth of prophets.) And technically we need to go back to either the 1603 JSC in Leo or the 1702 JSC in Aries as the start of our current era. Without getting further off track, without getting into delineation of either of these figures, I believe we can say that following 1603 and accelerating after 1702 was the advance of science and rationality as a new ?religion? at the expense of the prior Medieval hierarchy which valued the Church highly. I am obviously speaking of the West. This kind of observation may seem kind of silly as it is so obvious, but when one considers that one of the causes of Islamic Jihadism was a reaction against Western-style capitalism, then we have to backtrack and make the following connections:

1603/1702. JSC ? Fire. Scientific Revolution. Many technological advances.

1802. JSC ? Earth. Rise of the West (United States) and application of technological advances made since 1702 for purposes of profit in Western capitalistic societies.

1980/1981. JSC ? Air. Islamic Jihadism as a reaction to Western encroachment on other cultures, especially Mideast.

2000. JSC ? Earth. A throwback to issues of capitalism since 1802 and a conflict between capitalism and Islamic Jihadism.

I sincerely believe that if one is to make correct mundane astrological predictions, one has to make these kind of connections to get it right.

Jupiter-Saturn Opposition Part II - Delineation

So what happens at the upcoming opposition? Or rather what has already started to happen? To get to the right answer, we have to go back and look at the conjunction. Its chart is here:
What we need to do is delineate this figure which will give us the ?thesis? of the JSC. The upcoming oppositions will be the ?anti-thesis.? The notion of the JSC as ?thesis? was a concept presented by Robert Zoller at his first Mundane Astrology Intensive held October 8-11, 2004 in Vancouver. This is not a concept explicitly presented by Abu Ma?shar; it seems to be Zoller?s own synthesis of Abu Ma?shar and a theory of historical progress attributed to Hegel:

With Hegel, there is thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
With Abu Ma?shar, there are JSC conjunctions; also the descriptor of ?fortitude of the sword? applied to Jupiter-Saturn square aspects.

So let?s get to the thesis. What follows is a one page summary of a 70+ page document I wrote up in 2004 prior to the J-S waxing square which I have not published (and may not). The delineation is based on a combination of aphorisms by Abu Ma?shar and my own work in natal and mundane up through that point. As best as possible, I delineated using universal significations of planets placed in signs. Egyptian bounds were used. I did not use house positions of any planets in the figure.

Delineation of the May 28, 2000 JSC Taurus

Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, 22TA43. Power returns to the western people. The level of power is relatively weak compared to past achievements. Within societies power returns to the common people and the middle class. Intellectualism is spurned. Principal issues faced by this era are livestock diseases, death of learned men, property rights, resource scarcity, and the hoarding of commodities. Investment returns in natural resource industries will outperform returns from high tech ventures, reversing the trends of the last twenty years. Regions to be impacted by these issues include Iran, Iraq, autonomous Kurdish regions, Syria (especially the Golan Heights), Turkey, Cyprus, and the Greek Islands.

Venus, 3GE52. Past scandals are judged. These include sex scandals with children (Catholic Church sex scandal), financial frauds of telecom/information companies (Worldcom) and natural resource companies (Enron), frauds dealing with food/resources in general (UN oil-for-food scandal, state of world oil reserves). Domestic fowl is ill and contaminates the food supply (listeria, bird flu). Cell phones with imaging capabilities are instrumental in collecting evidence of scandal (Abu Gharib).

Moon, 3AR52. The people, whether signified by a Special Prosecutor or citizen?s tribunal, actively seek resolution of past scandals signified by Venus. They seek the release of wrongly imprisoned individuals. The cancellation of uncollectible African sovereign debt is also pursued. Their actions are spurred by incendiary comments/actions of the King?s inner circle. Sometimes people are successful in finding justice; at other times they suffer the same incendiary types of character assassination that triggered their own initial outrages against government officials.

Mars, 17GE13. Spying, lies, character assassination, hand grenades, car bombs, and computer viruses are the weapons of the era. They are employed by the King?s inner circle who are characterized by adversarial, self-righteous, and bullying males. Other significations of Mars include death by electrocution and lightning.

Mercury, 27GE37. Scholarship, investigations, indictments pertaining to resource scarcity and other issues of the conjunction are revealed in due time. Their conclusions are well-reasoned and accurate. The accuracy of these reports triggers ire from the King?s men who attack journalists/reporters with verbal and physical threats. Some suffer from character assassination. Others are killed.

Sun, 7GE36. Kings and media moguls will be known for financial corruption/fraud, incendiary/self-righteous advisors, and external investigations/charges which indict wrongdoing.

Next let's look at what's happening now and see how it ties back to this delineation.

Jupiter-Saturn Opposition ? Part III - Events

One of the predictive tools I used to test this delineation was to profect the JSC degree at the annual rate of 30 degrees per year and see what happened when it made conjunctions and aspects to other planets in the figure. I found many events which conformed to the delineation; in fact about half of the original paper I wrote was comprised of headlines of news events which matched the delineations just made.

Catholic Church Sex Scandal and the Revelation of Secret Databases

Why is the Catholic Church sex scandal in full bloom at the moment? It so happens that Mercury falls in the bound of Saturn/Gemini. That?s why I made the delineation of investigations and indictments. Because the bound of Saturn/Gemini adds a ?just the facts? quality to the type of facts which Mercury/Gemini collects. Saturn/Gemini can also signify facts and/or databases which are stored because Saturn?s nature includes storage and compression. Other significations: black file cabinets, addresses contained in black books, and a database of blacklisted individuals.

I suggest that part of the thesis was the collection of names of sex offenders within the Catholic church, some type of database was created (or a former one updated) given all the attention given to this issue in the early 2000s. Why the Church has gotten itself into trouble now has to do with how that database was managed, e.g., it was created with bits of information (Mercury/Gemini) but stored away (bound of Saturn/Gemini) and not aggressively enforced. So the anti-thesis is challenging the secrecy of the database and demanding action.

Within the financial markets, there is also an avalanche of secret correspondence regarding fraudulent trades, etc., which is coming out.

So all one has to do to predict events for the J-S opposition correctly is to define themes of the J-S conjunction and then look for the anti-thesis.

Other themes - Israel

Within the Mideast, the breakdown of the Camp David talks in the summer of 2000 and Ariel Sharon?s September 28, 2000 march to Temple Mount were major events tied to the J-S conjunction. In fact Israel seems especially amenable to JSC analysis. Consider the last cycle: Israel invaded Lebanon on 6-Jun-1982 shortly after the last 1980/81 JSCs and they completed their evacuations on May 24, 2000 ? just four days before the current JSC. Based on my observations, Israel is too controversial to discuss in public forums. But I think I can safely make the following statements: as the Camp David talks of 2000 were led by Bill Clinton, they properly belong to the ?end? of the prior 1980/1981 JSCs in Libra as Clinton?s leadership with his Libra Ascendant belonged to the 1980/1981 to 2000 era and not beyond. Therefore Sharon?s march to Temple Mount appears part of the thesis of the 2000 conjunction. Consider also that Sharon?s Kadima party was founded on November 21, 2005, his first stroke was December 18, 2005, and his fatal stroke was January 4, 2006. Please note that the first pass of the waxing Jupiter-Saturn square occurred on December 17, 2005 just one day before his first stroke! So Sharon definitely plays a role in the 2000 JSC. Sharon is apparently still alive, maintained by artificial life support. I would forecast that during the J-S oppositions, specifically between May 23, 2010 and March 28, 2011, that Sharon is removed from life support and a state funeral is held. This would be the antithesis of the 2000 JSC for Sharon.

Other themes ? Gay Marriage

Note that the conjunction has four planets in Gemini, a sign associated with bisexuality. Mercury and Venus are both in Gemini, that conjunction can be delineated as homosexuality. (This also ties back to the Catholic Church sex scandal.) Though this Mercury-Venus conjunction is a bit tricky because the two planets are separated by the Sun, I still think there is a reasonable case that gay marriage was one thesis of the conjunction. I remember monitoring news events during the waxing-square and specifically recall that the first gay divorce in Massachusetts occurred on December 17, 2005, the exact date of the waxing square. This from a couple which had married following the first legal same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts on May 17, 2004. So the divorce of that couple on the date of the waxing square signified the challenge of the thesis. Going back to the 2000 JSC, recall that Vermont?s April 1, 2000 recognition of legal rights of same sex couples was the first place globally where civil unions were made legal. This occurred just two months prior to the conjunction. If this delineation is correct, then the prediction of a blow-back against gay rights marriage rights in the fall 2010 midterm US elections has to be made. I am not sure how to make this more specific ? whether to say that prior civil unions legislation will actually be overturned or that certain states without such laws will enact legislation which defines marriage as exclusively heterosexual.

Other themes ? Resource Scarcity and Cheney?s Secret Energy Plan

Reviewing the 2000 JSC, one finds the JSC degree falls in the bound of Saturn/Taurus. I delineate Saturn/Taurus as resource scarcity and the destruction of capitalism. Near the time of the 2000 JSC George Bush announced Dick Cheney as his Vice-Presidential running mate. Cheney is another important figure because his natal chart recapitulates the JSC in the 9th house (Virgo rising). On this fact alone, e.g., the natal-mundane linkage between Cheney?s natal the 2000 JSC one could predict the Bush-Cheney ticket would win the 2000 election. One of the delineations I made earlier was well-reasoned research on the topic of resource scarcity. One of Cheney?s previous professional colleagues and a member of his Energy Task Force was Matt Simmons, a Houston energy investment banker and peak oil advocate. Simmons published ?Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy" which presented evidence that Saudi Arabia?s public resource figures were intentional deceptions. If that was the thesis, and I might add a significant rationale for Operation Iraqi Freedom, then what is the antithesis? Either revelation of Cheney?s secret energy plan, in line with the earlier trend of public demands for release of secret databases; OR new energy discoveries which negate the original thesis of energy scarcity. Consider this recent one which also ties into Israel.

If the GC of the changing of triplicity shows the birth of profect, probably we will start to see their working only in the next ten to twenty years, as they probably are still in college. If we use the median cycle, then there was no change of triplicity.

Well, Islam was born several millenia before this and has already seen at least three or four triplicity changes. And Jihads were always there in all western religions. Of course that the GCs don?t only announce new religions and dynasties, but also have an effect on the current ones.

The "empirical validity" that I have seen in the actual GC?s is that, more than times than not, the actual GC occurs on the angles of the place where huge changes will be announced. For instance, the actual GC of Jan 1981 was in the asc of Moscow, and 10 years later we know what happened. The GC of 2000 happened on the MC of Washingon/New york. The GC of 2020 will happen on the IC of Peking.

I have to disagree. What we have seen for the last ten years that seems to me as the most surprising event was the rise of China and the BRIC.

Besides that, as almost every GC since 1802 were of the earth type, I don?t think that the delineation "power goes to west" is really important. It has been this way for 200 years...

It may be, but it seem too UScentric to me, as I don?t see this as a world wide movement (au contraire, we see signs of gays in the stablishment every day). And if this is a prediction for the US, maybe regional charts should be casted.

Jupiter-Saturn: Barbault analysed only the political cycles on Europe. I don?t remember them, unfortunately. But if he is right, the GC?s always had a great effect on Europe.

So, the Euro, who started on 1999-2002, and its crisis, are probably one important factor for you to follow.

Vermont?s April 1, 2000 recognition of legal rights of same sex couples was the first place globally where civil unions were made legal.

It's probably just a typo that's slipped in, you've written a lot, and it's easy for one to creep in here and there. Vermont was the first place in the USA to make civil unions legal but they were legal in other countries long before the USA started down that path.

The 1980/1981 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction was a triple conjunction. Would there be some concepts to indicate the significance of all three the conjunction charts? For example the first being the start of a new cycle in the old one and the last conjunction a final kiss goodbye to the old cycle whilst already in the new cycle? The middle one being a 'hinge' point?

In Mark's thread ( http://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic ... 43&start=0 , first one after Mark's initial post), I made some suggestions on the upcoming Jupiter-Saturn opposition and left/right wing politics and my belief (hope? ) in the end of neo-liberalism that resulted in today's crises. Note that the upcoming opposition will be a triple opposition and the economical crisis started during the last Jupiter-Saturn trine which was the last of a 5-times! occurring J-S trine. I think of over-courageousness in economic thought.

A typical 1980's event was the 10 years war of Iran-Iraq and the USSR-Afghanistan war. As in other areas the Cold War was extended in 3rd World countries as 'hot' war with both US and USSR supporting fundamentalist groups. Those groups got redundant after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and fundamentalism could fully develop and turn them against their makers. At the same time boundless capitalism could b(l)oom.

Timing of prophets. Saturn/Libra marks the Saturn return of the 1980/1981 JSCs. I don?t have Abu Ma?shar in front of me, but if I recall part of the timing of prophets is based on Jupiter and Saturn?s synodic cycles. From a natal perspective, it does make some sense that if the JSC signifies a change in religion, then someone born with a 1980/1981 JSC in their natal, say the 9th house, may be lifted up from the masses as a symbol of the conjunction on the Saturn Libra Ingress (Saturn return of the 1980/1981 JSC). So we might be on the lookout for someone born in 1980/1981 who will have their Saturn return and decides to start a new religious movement. I will look at this later when I have some more time.

Islam. Yes Islam has been around along time, but the 1979 Iranian Revolution was a major change to Shia Islam for its embodiment of Islamic fundamentalism. So a major change to an existing religious sect.

Empirical. Good observations on what is essentially an astrocartography approach. I agree with your conclusions.

Barbault. If this was an influence on Zoller, he never mentioned it.

Power to the West. Agree that rise of China and the BRIC was and is a major shift in global power from west to east. The shift of power from the west to China, as discussed within the United States currently, is very similar to US paranoia on the rise of Japan in the 1980s. What I think is going on is China and BRIC may be related to the 1980/1981 JSCs, especially China which really opened up after that time. I said power returns to the western people because this is what Abu Ma?shar says for JSCs in earth triplicities. He also ranks them from strongest to weakest: Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus. Taurus is the weakest of the three, that?s why I said the ?level of power is relatively weak compared to past achievements.? I think we can go further than that by comparing the bound placement of each of the JSCs in Taurus:

18-Apr-1881. JSC 1TA35. bound Venus/Taurus. Era of robber baron capitalism, creation of great corporate trusts. Notable nativities: J.P. Morgan (Venus/Taurus/10th)

7-Aug-1940. JSC 14TA27, bound Jupiter/Taurus.
19-Oct-1940. JSC 12TA28, bound Mercury/Taurus.
15-Feb-1941. JSC 9TA07, bound Mercury/Taurus.
The era of 1940 to 1960 was probably the strongest expansion of American power following victory in WWII. Notable nativity: Franklin Roosevelt. Moon separates from Saturn/Taurus and applies to Jupiter/Taurus. Delivers people from scarcity. I haven?t considered Mercury/Taurus, but this is the professional significator of stock market analysts and probably relates to popularity of business as a profession generally (as opposed to science or medicine, for example)

28-May-2000. JSC 22TA43. bound Saturn/Taurus. As I said before, I have delineated Saturn/Taurus as resource scarcity and the destruction of capitalism. Notable nativity: Dick Cheney. An interesting comparison to FDR. With FDR we have a nativity with Moon separating from Saturn/Taurus and applying to Jupiter/Taurus during a JSC in the bound of Jupiter/Taurus and things improve. With Cheney, also a nativity with the JSC in the 9th of religion, it is different. Using the order of planets in a single sign as a temporal indication of their promise (see A Rectification Manual Chapter 6: Temporal Indications, Multiple Planets in a Single Sign, pp. 105-106), from low to high in degree order he has Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. So unlike FDR who delivered Americans from scarcity to abundance, with Cheney the order is abundance, scarcity, and revolution if one wishes to entertain Uranus. And Cheney operating during a JSC in the bound of Saturn/Taurus.

So bottom line, I think we are living in a mix of both the 1980/1981 JSCs, which I think marks the transition to air; at the same time the 2000 JSC is a throwback to earth. I would make the case that China and the BRICs are tied to the 1980/1981 JSC and since 2000 the west has made a somewhat futile power grab which is doomed to fail because the current JSC is in the bound of Saturn/Taurus.

Gay Marriage. (comment also for handn). I am no expert in this area, just reading Wiki which indicated in Oct 1989 Denmark was the first country to recognize a type of civil unions and that the Netherlands was the first nation to grant same-sex marriages in 2001. If Wiki is correct, then Denmark is the only nation prior to the 2000 JSC which allowed civil unions/marriage.

Thesis-Antithesis: Euro. Yes I agree that creation of the Euro was related to the 2000 JSC. My work shows Turkey a Taurus nation and the accession of Turkey to the EU was strongly pushed at the time at the beginning of this cycle. The Greece debacle, besides the fact that Greece is Virgo and Saturn is in that sign right now, is indicative of secret financial transactions designed to fraudulently qualify them for EU membership ? think this fits with the four planet stellium in Gemini. Venus/Gemini ? rapid/frequent transactions, love of transactions; Sun/Gemini ? the derivative/bankster magician; Mars/Gemini ? excessive risk taking; Mercury/Gemini in the bound of Saturn/Gemini and void of course ? completed financial transations which are stored and hidden from the public. So like the release of secret databases of all kinds, the uncovering of interest rate swaps, CDOs, etc., purposely designed to understate Greek?s interest rate expense, are part of the J-S opposition, or the anti-thesis.

How to handle the significance of the three 1980/1981 JSC charts? Is one more important than another? Really we have nothing to go on here from traditional authors so your guess is as good as mine. Regarding the upcoming J-S oppositions, three of them, because the first occurs in the Pisces/Virgo axis and the second two in the Aries/Libra axis, it seems logical that events of the 1st J-S opposition will differ from events of the 2nd and 3rd which should be more similar. As I said before, Virgo is Greece so it looks like we are getting the Greek/Euro debacle now. Later this summer, perhaps we get China or the Iran confrontation.

There have been several different threads discussing the behavior of planets during combustion and retrogradation. Considering Mercury and Venus, the view of traditional authorities as presented by Deb is that when these planets are retrograde they are closer to the earth (e.g., closer to humans) and therefore more ?base? in their mode of operations. In this model, scandals are revealed when Venus makes her first appearance as a morning star following her inferior conjunction. The scandal is judged at the superior conjunction.

That is why I stated in my delineation of Venus/Gemini that ?scandals will be judged? because Venus appears at her superior conjunction in the May 28, 2000 JSC figure. But I think we have to push this cycle further because as one cycle ends another begins. Perhaps there is no better example of the unstoppable impulse of Venus/Gemini than the rise of social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook) and social communication methods (Twitter). The increased ability of investment banks to repackage mortgage-backed securities allowed issuing banks to quickly move the loans off their balance sheets so the banks could make more loans. This is the linkage between these exotic debt instruments and high transaction turnover signified by Venus/Gemini.

I also mentioned high frequency trading (HFT). Unless you are a Wall Street equities specialist, this topic is probably over your head. But it was another variation of the same Venus/Gemini theme. There has already been a crackdown on the practice. As a result, market liquidity will decline and intraday moves will become more volatile.

This weekend?s publication of internal Goldman Sachs emails signifies the revelation of secret databases (here email) which I have mentioned before signifies the anti-thesis of the J-S opposition. I agree with you on keeping some of Barbault's assignments of political ideologies at arms' length. However, I do think that some ideologies can be categorized through astrological symbolism.
