Another Morinus/primary directions question 1 by Bulletbobb I have recently been experimenting with Morinus, but I have been unable to duplicate, even approximately, some of the data posted by Isaac Starkman. It is my understanding, perhaps flawed, that aspects to and by the angles in PD's should be the same no matter what system is used. Therefore, I don't understand why I can't duplicate Starkman's data. Has anyone else had this experience? Bob Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 12:33 pm
2 by Tom I haven't worked much with Morinus' primary directions but you are correct: all authorities agree on how to calculate directions to the angles and they should all come out the same, if you are doing the same thing. However if you are using a different key than is Mr. Starkman (e.g. you use Naibod 59' 08" = 1 year of life) and he uses Ptolemy (one degree = one year of life) you will get different hit dates. 3 by epurdue Doesn't Issac Starkman's program use solar arc directions? Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 3:00 pm
4 by Bulletbobb I assume Starkman's program calculates all kinds of progressions and directions. I've tried different keys in Morinus and can't get it to agree with Starkman. Somethink is fishy! Bob Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:08 pm

Somethink is fishy! Bob I don't have Isaac's program, but if memory serves, Topocentric pds are zodiacal "under the pole" where the pole is similar to the one that you'd get if you were doing Placidian directions under the pole. So you need to check the following in Morinus: 1. key, as previously mentioned (I don't remember whether Topo pds use degree/year or Naibod. 2. That you're using zodiacal directions. 3. That you're using Placidian or Placidian "under the pole" pds if Topocentric pds aren't provided. If all three of those conditions are fulfilled, you should be within a few days on your hit dates. - Ed Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 7:18 pm

But zodiacal and mundane directions to the angles differ. - Ed Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 7:29 pm
7 by pankajdubey Doesn't Isaac Starkman use- Topocentric Primary directions and precession correcterd solar returns ? These are very different creatures- fish vs cephalopod In Morinus, go to Options->Appearance I->check Topocentric positions. Generally, the difference is not too big. I have no experience of precessed solar returns. 8 by Ed F Don't confuse Topocentric primary directions and topocentric positions. The former are the Polich/Page/Marr/Starkmann approach to primary directions and house division. The latter are planetary positions corrected for parallax at the location of the observer. - Ed Quote Tue Jul 13, 2010 7:47 pm
9 by PFN I've compared Morinus to Ed Falis program Astro Frames and to Solar Fire In Mundo PDs when I was starting to use directions, and if the same criteria is used, they give the exact same results. So, I think you should ask I. Starkman how his software criteria differs, or if they do. Paulo Felipe Noronha Quote Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:26 am

11 by Bulletbobb I did some more experiments and still cannot duplicate the results. If I use a user key of about 1.1? I get close, but that doesn't make any sense. I sent an email to Starkman with hopes that he can tell me what settings he used. IMHO, it doesn't reflect well on PD's that there is so much confusion in trying to do something so simple as duplicate some data. Were this a question about secondaries or solar arcs there wouldn't be all this confusion. I'll post the results when/if I hear from Starkman. Bob Quote Wed Jul 14, 2010 1:43 pm
