On things happening suddenly 1 by Hariolus Would you be so kind to help me out of a little thing? In erecting a chart for something happening, to see if something evil will follow, I am not sure what Lilly means with "and see which of these is most powerful in the Ascendant", because obviously we see many charts in which these 1-3 planets are elsewhere; does he mean we consider them "AS IF THEY WOULD BE" in the sign ascending? or what? I had a case recently, ASc : Aries So we have Mars Moon is received by Jupiter Sun is domiciled So we have to consider: Mars (in Virgo, 6th, conjuncion exalted Saturn and Part of fortune), Jupiter (in Aries 12th, opp Mars and Saturn and trine Sun), and Sun (in Leo 4th, trine Jupiter) which one wins ? Here is the Lilly's text, Of A Thing Suddenly Happening, Whether it Signifies Good or Evil. Erect your Figure of Heaven at what time the Accident happened, else when you first heard of it; then consider who is Lord of the Signe wherein the Sunne is, and the Lord of that Signe wherein the Moon is, and the Lord of the house of Life, which is ever the Ascendant, and see which of these is most powerfull in the Ascendant, let his position be considered, and if he be in Sextile or Trifle with the Sun, Jupiter or Venus, there will no evill chance upon the preceding Accident, Rumour or Report; but if you find that Planet weak in the scheame, combust or in Square, Opposition or Conjunction of Mars, Saturn or Mercury, there will some misfortune follow after that accident, in one kind or other; if you consider the Planet afflicting your Significator; his posture and nature, it may easily be discovered, in what nature the evill will chance or upon what occasion; as if the Lord of the 3rd, from or by some neighbour or Kinsman; if the Lord of the 2nd impedite them, then losse in substance; if Lord of the 4th, expect discontent with one of your Parents, or about Land or Houses; if the Lord of the 5th, some difference or discord in an Alehouse or Taverne, or in Company keeping, or by meanes of some child, &c. and so of the rest. Zadkiel in his abridged version rephrases like this: "and see if either of these be in the ascendant; and, if more the one, take the most powerful" which is what gets me confused. Thank you! BTW, anyone uses this often? I find it very useful. Quote Thu Jul 29, 2010 2:10 pm
2 by Deb Hi The passage is translated from an older work. At the moment I don't have time to check the earlier sources but I should be able to come back and add those details in later. (Just so you know that this is transmitting an older technique, not something that Lilly developed in the 17th century) Also - for the sake of others who want to check this - the page ref in CA is p.148 To answer your question, where he writes: consider who is Lord of the Signe wherein the Sunne is, and the Lord of that Signe wherein the Moon is, and the Lord of the house of Life, which is ever the Ascendant, and see which of these is most powerfull in the Ascendant, let his position be considered, He is telling you to judge by the one which has most essential dignity in the degree of the ascendant. So let's say the ascendant is 12 Aries in a day chart - the Sun is then most powerful in the ascendant because it governs by exaltation and triplicity and face, so you would go mainly by that. Also, it would not be out of place to consider placement near to the ascendant or strong aspect to the ascendant either, since having 'claim' to the power of the ascendant was dependent upon having authority over it (by essential dignity) and access to it (by aspect). Hope that helps and makes sense, Deb Quote Thu Jul 29, 2010 2:37 pm
3 by Hariolus It does! How silly, I should have known. In my case, fortunately Sun wins (4 points exaltation, 3 points day triplicity ruler) over Mars (5 points ruler). And he is trine Jupiter! Fewwww. (Intruders got into my house, under strange circumstances). Now I relax. I know it doesnt fail. Zadkiel wording awful, I declare. Thanks a lot, and for your magnificent site in general.
