Just re-reading ibn Ezra (Meira Epstein trans. Beginning of Wisdom), and on p 145 - 146, we have:

...Lot of Death taken by day and by night from the degree of the Moon to the beginning of the eighth house calculated according to the latitude of the place, and cast from the place of Saturn, and there is the Lot.

I don't have the Hebrew to hand, but I'm guessing 'the place' is probably 'ha makom', which leaves me as much in the dark.

Latitude of what place? The geographical place, the moon, what did I miss when I slept through that class, please?

My guess is that he means simply that the houses should be calculated for the geographical place, that is, one should use carefully calculated quadrant houses.

That's how I'd interpret the phrase "latitude of the place" as well.

Thanks, guys, that does make sense. I've heard people insist that lots can only be calculated using whole signs (tend to disagree, personally), but I'm glad this definitely looks not to fit that description.

Some lots are calculated from 15 degrees of the sign such as 15 Cancer for sailing / water journeys.

I know, Curtis. I have lists of lots calculated from different places (there's that word again!), I'd just never seen 'the latititude of the place' included in the calculations before and not having the original language text to hand, wasn't quite sure which 'place' was being referred to - the place on earth does make the most sense, even though I'm guessing at how the Hebrew was likely phrased.

It makes the most sense anyway, and I've not heard of lots being calculated from planetary latitude, so....

Perhaps he meant Placidus houses avant la lettre.

Yes, this is an old article published in one of the first journals edited by Prof. Bezza where Ibn Ezra method is explained in detail

Moreover Ibn Ezra discussing profections in the Latin version of The book of revolutions mentions "ascensionum signorum in tabulis regionis". In the beautiful translation by Meira Epstein there is note by Robert Hand.

So, following this, more recently Prof.Bezza built his own method of profections based on ascension degrees rather than zodiacal ones (the freeware Morinus allows the possibility to calculate them).

And I would not mention, but Placidus method of calculating of Lots was not based on the ecliptic (whatever place in the world the zodiacal degrees remain the same), but in some way on the latitude of the place

Yes, that is what Ibn Ezra Means: Quadrant houses per the specific location (i.e. unequal). There are other instances, in other books, where he emphasizes that. And, btw, he never mentions whole-sign houses as such. Meira*
