Gay Rights in the USA

1
This last week has been a significant and jubilant one for many gay and lesbian people in the USA. Last Friday the New York Senate legalized gay marriage making New York the sixth US state to legalize gay marriage. As New York is the third most populous state in the US this is bound to have an influence beyond the state itself. Not least as New York intends to offer marriage ceremonies to couples who are not residents of the state.

As astrologers we always look for cycles and repeating patterns. It therefore seems highly poignant that this news came just a few days before the anniversary of the Stonewall riots which took place 42 years ago today. These were riots in Greenwich Village area of New York which first broke out on June 28th 1969. They were motivated by perceived sustained harassment of the local gay and lesbian community by the Police.

Despite what astrologers from Firmicus Maternus to Liz Greene state I am really unconvinced that sexual orientation has a signature in the natal chart. However, I do think the chart for the start of the Stonewall riots is interesting. If nothing else it can be seen as a potential birth moment for collective gay and lesbian political consciousness and awareness.

Here is the chart:

I am not going to attempt to delineate this chart as other astrologers have already done so:

Although its beyond the strict focus of the mundane forum I want to highlight this interesting blog by the Irish astrologer Oein DeBhairduin which has a very thought provoking piece on 'gay astrology' and takes a sceptical eye at astrological literature on the subject.

The subject of gay and Lesbian marriage is still a highly controversial one in many parts of the USA. For example in California same sex marriages were legalized on June 16th 2008 by a ruling by the Supreme Court of California. However this right ended November 5, 2008, due to the passage of Proposition 8,[1] an amendment to the California Constitution that limited marriages to those between one man and one woman. Before the passage of Proposition 8, California was only the second state to allow same-sex marriage. This issue is still going through the California courts as it has been argued proposition 8 was unconstitutional. Moreover, there has been discussion of holding another referendum on the subject of same sex marriage in California in 2012.

This topic looks like continuing to divide Americans for the forseeable future and may well be an issue at the forthcoming Presidential election. Although it is interesting that the vote in the New York Senate last week occured in a Republican dominated upper house.

I thought I would see if the New York senate vote is mirrored by transits to what I regard as one of the most accuate charts for the USA -the Federal Constitution chart for 4th March 1789,

Here is the chart displayed in the inner wheel with the transits for Noon on June 24th on the outer wheel. Both charts are displayed in whole sign houses.

The recent solar eclipse on Jun 1 2011 was focused on 11? Gemini and therefore square the MC/IC axis in the 1789 USA chart.

Mars the ASC ruler of the radix USA chart is transiting the USA 8th house WS and is conjunct the nodal axis and US Moon of the 1789 chart. The moon rules the 9th house of the 1789 chart by WS houses. (The 9th house is the astrological house especially connected to legal matters and law making.). Transiting Mercury is conjunct Jupiter in the 9th house of the 1789 chart. Transiting Jupiter is trine the radix lot of fortune and MC.

New York was admitted to the Union July 26, 1788
its capital is Albany, possibly this would be a better chart, since this was a STATE law, not a US law.
though the Stonewall riots are a Perfect chart for this instance since again its New York.

would be wonderful if the whole country stopped acting like a bunch of fearful xenophobic twits, but I'm afraid there are still a whole lot of backward folk up in them thar hills (not to mention them thar cities). I hope that information is useful, Granny

Yes I know the development is state based rather than federal. However, I think this development will have national significance. Moreover the state of New York has a population of around 20 million people. This therefore involves far more people than many domestic US stories we expect to pick up from US national charts.

However, perhaps the real landmark will be when Texas and Utah do the same thing!

I think you'll have to drag Texas and Utah into the 20th century (not a typo) kicking and screaming, but good luck, Heck California, generally a socially liberal state, can't seem to get its act together on this issue. I applaud New York, but unfortunately, I dont think that we are as close to being a free country as we should be, and wont be for a while. Way too many people with control issues. would really be nice if they'd control themselves instead.

But I digress, If you look at the 26 july 1788 chart next to the Passage of the bill the Natal Sun and Uranus are TRINE Transiting Uranus. Transiting Venus is Conj Natal Chiron (love and the wounded healer, how apt) Trine the Aquarian Natal Pluto and the Libra Natal Neptune (Conj Transiting Saturn, how appropriate that some very conservative state senators had the Idealism to stand for what is right, instead of what is on their political agenda)

I think there is a strong argument for using the state chart here. Anyway, We can hope.

Hi Granny,

I am a bit pushed for time just now but by all means go ahead and post the chart for New York's accession to the union up so members can take a look for themselves.

Thanks

Here are instructions on ways to post up charts from the horary forum:

http://skyscript.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3538

I tend to use Tinypic myself. You need to minimize the chart before saving on your desktop or it will overfill the whole forum screen. I dont use charts from astro.com as Tanit suggests but rather save charts from Solar Fire on to my desktop.

If you have any problems let me know by PM and I will post it up for you.

attempting now, The Interior wheel is the admission to Union for state of NY, the Exterior is 10:34pm NY, for the passing of the legislation, I have a couple of charts I just continually re-use. I dont have solar fire though every now and then I think I might break down and spend the money.

Hi Granny,

Thanks for the time for the passing of the legislation. Do you have an online source for that time?

Afraid your chart isn't really visible. Maybe minimizing is only relevant for Solar Fire not astro.com charts?

Personally I still think the chart for 1789 is also relevant on a NY state basis. Let me explain. I know websites always list when states 'joined the union'. Its undeniable on the 26th of July 1788 New York state voted to ratify the new Federal constitution. However, New York and the other founding states of the Federal union were not part of the union until the 4th of March 1789. Quite simply because there was no Federal union to join before that date! You could take the line that New York and other states were already in the Confederal US under the Articles of Confederation. However, you would need to look at a different ratification date if you want to argue that. Alternatively, it could be argued that the union 'came into operation' after the 9th state of New Hampshire ratified it on June 21st 1788. In practical terms though the Congress of Confederation did not accept the new constitution until July 2nd 1788. Following this the Confederal Congress decided on 13th September 1788 for the new constitution to begin on 4th March 1789.

As the US government was first located in New York the chart for when the Federal Constitution came into legal effect on 4th March 1789 is therefore also effective for New York state.

So here is the chart again with the time of the Gay marriage votes was passed by the Governor on the outer wheel. Interesting how close the MC/IC axis of the 2011 chart is to the ASC/DESC axis in the 1789 chart.

Ps please give your source for that time Granny. Thanks

Hi Mark,
with respect to the chart of March 4th, 1789. There's no doubt that it works, at times even much better than the countless 1776 charts. - Are you sure that the time should be mean local time and not true local time? True local time would be about 11 minutes later. However, AC would still be in Scorpio.
