There is an excellent and extensive free charts section on the Astrodienst website, at www.astro.com . Start with your natal chart--you can worry about the others later.

You will notice a divide between practitioners of different "schools" of astrology: modern, traditional, and Hindu, for starters. The systems have some overlap, but significant differences. Then these have their own divisions. Many traditional astrologers practicing today started with modern astrology, then switched over.

If it's any consolation, I started with astrology books that were so basic (like Linda Goodman) that they didn't even give horoscopes as illustrations! Just be patient with yourself, but keep at it. It is a bit like teaching yourself to play a musical instrument, or learning a new foreign language.

As a modern astrologer, my favourite primer for a beginner would be Steven Forrest, The Inner Sky. Then follow this with Robert Hand, Planets in Youth (good for people of all ages).
