Denmark's centre-left has won the country's general election, ending nearly a decade in opposition. With all votes counted, the bloc led by Social Democrat leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt had won a narrow majority in parliament.

Ms Thoring-Schmidt will be Denmark's first female prime minister. Her election has ousted the right-wing government from power after 10 years of pro-market reforms and ever-stricter controls on immigration.

Ms Thorning-Schmidt had campaigned on a platform of tax rises and increased public spending. She also promised to roll back tough immigration laws proposed by a junior partner of the outgoing coalition government.

I wonder if this might be part a major trend with a shift to the left across continental Europe as voters reject centre-right governments handling of the recession? The French elections next year will tell.

I haven't managed to find timed data but Ms Thorning-Schmidt was born on December 14th 1966 in the Danish town of R?dovre and the seat of the R?dovre Municipality, in the Region Hovedstaden.
