The Basque separatist group Eta says it has called a "definitive cessation" to its campaign of bombings and shootings.

In a statement provided to the BBC, Eta called on the Spanish and French governments to respond with "a process of direct dialogue". The declaration, if followed through, would bring an end to Eta's campaign of violence, which has lasted more than 40 years and killed more than 800 people.

Spain's PM said the move was "a victory for democracy, law and reason".
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said after 40 years of bomb attacks and assassinations, Spain was now experiencing "legitimate satisfaction" at the victory over terror.

The group has faced a concerted crack down from Spanish and French authorities over the last two years and much of its leadership has been imprisoned.

ETA or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna; ("Basque Homeland and Freedom") is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization. The group was founded in 1959 and has since evolved from a group promoting traditional Basque culture to a paramilitary group with the goal of gaining independence for the Greater Basque Country in both Spain and France. ETA is the main organisation of the Basque National Liberation Movement and is the most important participant in the Basque conflict. ETA declared ceasefires in 1989, 1996, 1998 and 2006, but subsequently restarted killing. However, in 2011, ETA declared a "permanent, general and verifiable" ceasefire with the expressed aim of ending its campaign.

I don't know what is worse -- the fact that those kind of things exist, or the fact they have logos and mottos like some kind of shoe brand so people could tell the terrorist organizations apart or something like that.

The movement has been going for over 50 years so its not so surprising it has acquired such trappings. The roots of this are found during the dictatorship of Franco since ETA originally carried on some oppositional political ideas from the Spanish civil war in the 1930s.

Such slogans were very powerful during the Spanish civil war. For example the famous Spanish leftist slogan "They shall not pass" (Spanish: "?No pasar?n!"), It clearly expresed the unswerving determination to defend the Republic against the Nationalist enemy.

ETA unintentionally, assisted the transition to democracy in Spain. The most significant assassination carried out by ETA during Franco's dictatorship was the December 1973 bomb assassination in Madrid of Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, Franco's chosen successor and president of the government.

Of course this doesn't explain or excuse the litany of murder and terrorist outrages carried out by ETA.

Why ETA continued to use terrorist violence in a democratic and federal Spain is a mystery to me. Spain has had a very devolved constitution with a Basque regional assembly for decades. A referendum on independence was fully possible as in neighbouring Catalonia. I guess some people just become ideologically habituated to violence and its effects. ETA has been losing support for decades so its now completely out of touch with Basque public opinion.

Pre-lunation as in the chart displayed above. Its a bit tedious writing this out every time. In this instance I could have called it simply the full moon chart but that takes too long too. There is always the word 'syzygy' but its a weird looking word to many people without any nouns in it. Plus I always forget the correct spelling!
