I hope to get some interest generated with this chart as it has some noteworthy configurations. The Sun is at the bottom of the chart will and should draw some attention. But what struck me is Mars. Mars is at the bendings (tightly square the nodes), elevated, and part of a grand trine with Pluto and Jupiter, and conjunct (0 orb according to Solar Fire) the fixed star Thuban. But mostly Mars is the ruler of the year and his influence will be the dominant planet for the year.

Thuban is not one of the most heavily discussed fixed stars. Robson doesn't mention it, neither does Ebertein. It is one of the three brightest stars in the constellation Draco the Dragon. The dragon doesn't set in the temperate zones. It is circumpolar. Therefore there can be no parans. Ptolemy says it is of the nature of Saturn and Mars. Being of the nature of the two malefics is not a happy prospect. Draco is described as:

the serpent of Mars, a creature with a wonderful golden crest; fire flashed from its eyes, its body was all puffed up from poison, and from its mouth, set with a triple row of teeth, flickered a three-forked tongue"

Is Mars going to trigger this beast? If so, how can that be related to the mundane world? Where is Mars angular when using this chart.

In the US (chart cast for DC) the angles are mutable and the MC is about to change to Libra.

Is anyone up to a prediction or two using this chart cast for anywhere? There is certainly enough going on the world where some of the above and I'm sure more than is mentioned above will be activated. I hope to post some thoughts when I clarify them in my mind.

Now I ran the chart the way Brady does and Thuban is NOT aligned in the way she does charts, But for arguments sake I'll tell you what she says about Mars in relation to Thuban

without looking at the chart in relation to any other, but just at it alone, I'd say that Passion, destruction and regeneration, and Benefits and Money all work together easily in this chart, end of the depression/recession? If Saturn is wealth and Moon debt, does this trine mean that some work will be done to help the two reconcile??? The applying square with Mercury and sun against Pluto has me wondering is the sun education? is Mercury the President or is it enemies? (gemini or Virgo?) not sure I want to touch that one!

Interesting point about Mars and the nodes. I note the Moon is also antiscion Saturn. However, there are positive indications in this chart. Not least the fact that Jupiter disposits the ASC and Moon and is in the 5th house with Venus. This looks like a much better year for the American people if this chart is our indicator. The main fly in the ointment is that applying Moon opposition to Mars. Moon is also forming a separating trine to the POF. Interesting there is a Sag rising chart with degrees quite close to the 1776 (Sibly) chart. North Node also in the first house.

However, the leadership are facing sizeable opposition. Not surprisizing in an election year! The MC ruler (Mercury ) in the 4th house (the house of governmental opposition)and combust the Sun. Similarly, the Sun (natural significator for the ruler) is angular on the IC. Surely, an indication of weakness for the Obama Presidency over the period of this ingress.

Since a common or mutable sign rises traditional guidelines indicate we should use the Libra ingress as our primary chart for the second half of the year. Personally, though I tend to look at the other ingresses as providing clarifying detail on the main ingress.

I am interested how you concluded Mars is Lord of the year? William Ramesey discusses several approaches. Principally, the most angular planet in the figure. Here it is the Sun and as it is an Aries ingress chart Mars certainly has a strong role as its dispositor. Another is to take the Lord of the ASC. What is your approach here?

I have been meaning to look into this subject for ages so your mention of this really interested me. There is of course the basic difficulty that Mars always rules the Sun in an Aries ingress and the Sun is always exalted in Aries. If we adopted that basic outlook Mars or the Sun would always be our Lord of the Year. Still I do accept you have other reasons for selecting Mars as LOY here.

In his book Astrology Restored (Astrologia Restaurata) (Book IV ? Astrologia Munda , Section II ? Chapter IV) William Ramesey sets out an approach he attributes to various traditional authorities. Its clear the notion of LOY had several competing and arguably contradictory approaches in his day. He suggests the following basic hierarchy of delineation for LOY:

1 Sole angular planet=Lord/Lady of the Year

2 If multiple planets on angles Ramesey suggests the following approach:

....but if you shall find many planets in angles, or one angle, and would know which of them is to be assigned Lord of the Year; look which of them is Lord of the hour or day, and he shall be chosen Lord of the Year especially if he beholds the Lord of the term he is in, or the Sun if the Revolution be by day; or the Moon if by night; and judge according to his strength and debility, good or bad, as you have already been sufficiently taught.

3 Failing this Ramesey suggests next going on to assess the most dignified angular planet (I assume this is derived from essential and accidental dignity) and looking at its aspects and receptions.

If you find no planets in angles either as Lord of the hour or day, or both, then see which of them is most fortunate or strong, and make him Lord of the Year; see also which of the other planets are joined in signification with him, and according to their strengths, debilities and nature you make a right commixture and judge thereof.

4 Failing any angular candidates with these supporting testimony Ramesey then suggests going to planets placement in the 5th or 11th houses to an ingress without angular planets:

But if at the time of your Revolution there is no planet found in any of the angles, see what planet is in the eleventh or fifth houses, and that planet which is found in either of them shall be Lord of the Year. If there is more than one, see that you investigate the business in every particular as you have heard of the planets in angles.

5 Then we are advised to check out the 9th or 3rd houses:

And yet, if you find none in the eleventh or fifth, then see which of them are in the ninth or third, and say the planet in either of them is Lord of the Year, and so judge accordingly as you have heard; but if there are no planets either in these houses, see which of all the planets1 first goes out of the sign where it is, for he shall be Lord of the Year, especially if he behold the Lord of the term he is in, or the Sun if the Revolution is by day; or the Moon if it is by night.

Ramesey then goes on to offer us a totally different approach for Lord of the Year which strongly favours a luminary being a LOY disproportionately in charts:

But if it happens that the Sun in a diurnal Revolution is in any of the angles, or the Moon in a nocturnal Revolution, he or she shall then be Lord or Lady (as I may say) of the Year.

Then Ramesey offers us another identifier of LOY which involves the cases where the ASC ruler disposits a luminary and especially the luminary of sect.

Haly also says, that when in any Revolution it should happen that the Lord of the Ascendant is also the Lord of the house that either of the Luminaries are in, especially that of the time, he shall without doubt or controversy be the Lord of the Year, and also significator of the people.

Ramesey concludes by describing some other approaches :

Others have taught us consider the Lord of the Ascendant, who, if it is direct, free from combustion, and in the Ascendant, i.e. within three degrees within the house or four without, or outside of the cusp, he shall without any more ado be concluded Lord of the Year, and you need not trouble yourself further to seek any other; but if he is either combust or retrograde, he cannot be admitted Lord of the Year. Wherefore then, you are to consider the conditions of the planet that has exaltation in the Ascendant; if it is a sign where any of the planets have their exaltation, and see whether he is free from combustion and direct, and placed in the Ascendant, as you have heard; for if so, he shall be Lord of the Year; but if he is retrograde or combust, he shall not have that honour.

If that is so, then, you are to inquire whether the Sun or Moon is not worthier of this rule; for if the Revolution is by day, and the Sun has any dominion in the Ascendant then he shall have it; if by night, and the Moon is so dignified

So what are we to make of all this?

The Sun is the only angular planet here. However, it is a nocturnal not a diurnal chart. Moreover, the planetary hour is that of Mars. I would tend to discount the luminary of opposing sect to the time as LOY.

As this is a night chart it favours the nocturnal planets: Mars, Venus and the Moon. Mars is strongly in sect here above the horizon in a night chart in a feminine sign and quarter. While it falls in the cadent 9th by quadrant it is in the 10th house by whole sign/zodiacal order. It is as Tom points out the most elevated planet. Although it is retrograde. It is also peregrine.

This Mars seems to have a fair amount of malefic potential. Apart from its retrograde motion and lack of essential dignity it has passed its opposition to the Sun. Mars is naturally dry and hot but this part of its solar phase increases its dryness making this an especially destructive quarter in its solar phase.

Tangible concerns here are its square to the nodes and the Moon's forthcoming opposition.

What about the Moon? It is the luminary of sect. It has triplicity rulership in Pisces. It is in a feminine sign. By quadrant houuses it is in its joy. It is angular in the 4th by zodiacal order. Its disposited by Jupiter which is the ASC ruler. It forms a sextile to its ruler. The Moon is also the planetary day ruler. It forms a mutual reception with Jupiter. It is decreasing in light.

Using the method of Haly cited by Ramesey would seem to favour Jupiter being LOY in this figure:

Haly also says, that when in any Revolution it should happen that the Lord of the Ascendant is also the Lord of the house that either of the Luminaries are in, especially that of the time, he shall without doubt or controversy be the Lord of the Year, and also significator of the people

Jupiter is lord of the ASC, direct and free of combustion. Its placed in the 5th by Quadrant houses but falls in the the WS 6th. The Moon is forming a sextile to Jupiter and this aspect involves a mutual reception with the Moon in the domicile of Jupiter and Jupiter in the triplicity and exaltation of the Moon. Jupiter is not only Lord 1 but also disposits the luminary of sect. According to Ramesey (quoting Haly) this makes Jupiter unambiguously the LOY.

This issue rather reminds of the debate in natal astrology to establish the Master of the Nativity-Almuten-Lord of the Geniture. Differering approaches will clearly favour different outcomes. There is something to be said for a more pragmatic approach to this rather than reducing it to a bean counting exercise. The main difference I would probably take with the 17th century astrologers would be to give more emphasis on planetary sect and looking at the luminary of sect as a candidate.

The Moon is clearly very important in any ingress chart. The more so in a night chart. It is the natural significator of the people and its condition and separating/applying aspects give us a real insight into the flow of events affecting the populace. Whatever planet we see as LOY that impending Moon-Mars opposition gives real cause for concern.

Lets recall this opposition is occuring in every Aries ingress chart on earth.
My personal speculation on this is that it reprsents some further crisis in the Eurozone saga which may seriously disrupt international markets.

In the USA chart Mars is the dispositor of both the MC ruler and the Sun which seems to indicate something opening up a rift or separation between the people and the leadership. In this chart the Moon has an unfortunate association as Lord 8.

As stated already the Sun is on the IC while the MC ruler (Mercury) is combust. The latter is a traditional indicator of a leader losing power. In the 2010 Aries Ingress for the United Kingdom Mercury also ruled the MC and was combust the Sun. The incumbent Labour government of Gordon Brown went on to lose power shortly afterwards.

One saving grace for Obama is that he isn't facing an imminent election.
Many traditional authorities would consider the Libra ingress the crucial one for the actual election period. And of course there are many other chart indicators to be considered too. Not least the annular eclipse path going through the western USA on May 21st.

Regarding being on the MC it seems over parts of the central US, Canada and Mexico most strongly. Mars will be right on the MC in most of Texas-Houston, Dallas/Forth Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. Also mid-western cities to the north like Oklahoma city. Its also right on the MC in the Canadian city of Winnipeg in Manitoba. Its also going to be over the MC in central Mexico. Its a couple of degrees from the MC located for Mexico city. A late Scorpio ascendant rises in most of these locations (Houston has early Sag rising) so Mars is even more important in its role in the chart.

Interesting that the western USA will also be on the path of the annular eclipse on May 21st. The eclipse will be visible across the western and central USA, Canada and Mexico.
