retrograde significator

I am considering a relationship horary where the significator of the quesited is retrograde (Mercury at 15 degrees Leo). Quesitor is Jupiter at 13 degrees Libra. Normally, this would be a separating aspect, but here I assume that I take the retrograde motion of Mercury into account and consequently hold that an applying sextile is being formed between Mercury and Jupiter?

Furthermore, is there a general interpretation/meaning of a significator retrograde (at least where the significator is a person?)

In this chart the quesited was planning on heading overseas, but with his significator retrograde in the 9th house, I'm wondering if his travel plans are literally "going backwards" or coming undone.... at least temporarily....

I'd been taught that a retrograde significator meant the party signified was somehow in a weakened position.

However, if the relationship question involves being reunited with someone, or returning to an old relationship, have the retrograde significator might be a positive indication of that, since the two rulers would now be applying to each other.

What you say might be particularly apt here. The parties were together, but have been separated by circumstances for some time.

I've been watching this dance between Mercury and Jupiter. It's not just that Mercury is retrograde, but it's combust. The combustion is much worse, because what little power Mercury had is overwhelmed by the Sun.

So this old boyfriend or whatever may be going back over his past to be with you, but whether that's good or bad is less important than the fact that even if he wanted to, he can't come back to you.

But, once Mercury turns direct, it will apply again to Jupitier, and it won't be combust anymore. And both will be in the same sign so it's a valid aspect for your chart. They will have mutual reception by triplicity which is good enough. Might not be romance, but there it is.

Thanks MarkF, always appreciate your feedback. I'm still a novice with a tendency to overlook things at times eg here where I completely overlooked the combustion! which is obviously relevant to the strength of this man's position to act.

Also overlooked the reception by triplicity even though I had consulted Ptolemy's table. So easy to overlook things in this line of astrology!

Thanks for the compliment.

I just noticed the second aspect between them today, in that other topic I posted about the legal matter.

If you don't have SolarFire or something like it, it's tough to see things like that. It's tough even when you have it. I know, I've been there. But then again I used to do charts with paper and pencil and the ephemeris. But I'm dating myself now and that was junky old "modern" astrology stuff.

We were just talking about this very topic in another topic. What I learned from someone, a professional who studied under Lee Lehman was that the outer planets don't count for things like prohibition, frustration, translation of light, or for a Void of Course Moon.

I wouldn't count an aspect to an outer planet unless it aspects one of the main significators (as it does here) or unless it's angular.

Here's how I use Neptune. Neptune means confusion, so if your outlook and mood is bad, it will often indicate that the situation isn't as bad as you think. If you're feeling confident about the situation, then the reality will not be as goos as you think. Now that's a general idea. You really have to apply it to your situation. But I'd want to counteract the idea that Neptune always means that the situation is worse than you think.
