The following two horoscopes leave some open
questions to me - concerning the success of their owners.

The two natives, Einstein and Michael Ende, have reached
very big successes in their live, but I think I cannot see their
success properly in their horoscopses.
Below I will explain why.

Let us begin with Michael Ende.
He was a fine writer of fantasy literature whose
books are sold world wide and have gained a lot of
prizes (I would say he had also deserved
the Nobel prize for literature).

But the lord of the tenth house is Saturn, and Saturn is
located at the cusp of the eighth house, i.e. a very bad place.
He is not in an important essential dignity and is squared by
the Moon. Only the sextile to the well-posed Venus
(Lady of the sixth house) corresponds to his belletristic work.

In fact, until 1960 he was not able to be successful with his
writings and had to struggle with large financial problems.
He even thought about giving up writing. His first novel
"Jim Knopf" has been rejected by several publishers until
it was accepted by the pyblisher Thienemann. But after that,
this book became his first big success.

The misfortune corresponds to Saturns position in the
eight house, but where can we find the success?
Let's look at the Lord of Saturn:
It is Jupiter in the first house near the Ascendent.
This is a strong position of this benefit planet that
can indicate the later success.

But Jupiter is located in Gemini, its Exile.
On the one hand, Gemini is an air sign that stands for
communication (Jupiter + Gemini = successful communication,
wide-spread circulation of the books).
Additionally, the Lord Mercury is in the sixth house
ruled by Venus (Mercury itself ruled by a well-posed Mars)

But on the other hand, according to the classic
doctrine Jupiter should be weakened severely
in his exile. This reduces strongly his ability
to bring success.
For that I think I cannot properly see Michael
Ende's successes in the horoscope.

Now let us look at Einstein's horoscope.
His work has been really over-average and outstanding.
Can I see that in the horoscope?
I see the Sun (Lord of 3 - communication) in 10 - Einstein
as a public persion - and he became well-known by his
scientific communications and reports about his work.
Mercury is also presend in 10 (the Mind), and he is in
conjunction with Saturn: a sign for a mathematical and
scientific talented person. Additionally, Mars,
the Lord of both, is in its exaltation, and Mars
and Saturn are in reception.

But Saturn is in its Fall! As Saturn rules the seventh
house it matches well with his problems in married life.
But what is with Einstein's talents? Indeed he had
some initial handicaps in mathematics - so he needed
some mathematical help to work out the General theory of
relativity. But all in all he was a scientific genius
with a deep intuition.

The Lord of the tenth house is in 9. Einstein was
very interested in basic philosophical questions,
and he saw his research as a part of such fundamental
questions. But Jupiter is not very great posed, and
Jupiter's Lord is again Saturn who is in its fall.

So we see many indications for Einstein's merits and abilities,
but does Saturn in its Fall not contradict to that?
I think, Saturn conjoined to Mercury and in its Fall
should pull Einsteins mental abilities down - NOT towards
incompetence, but towards some more mediocrity.
But that contradicts to Einstein's outstanding merits
and abilities.

hi felix,

there are many different methods and systems to astrology. lately i've been spending time wanting to understand the traditional way in accessing and defining eminence. i like some of the results with whole house systems and off using the part of fortune and spirit to accomplish this.

ende's chart is more challenging then einsteins using my present approach.

ende's part of fortune is in the 8th whole sign house, while saturn is in the wsh 7th and in the 12th in relation to the pof. overall this doesn't suggest something positive, but more difficulty in reaching some level of eminence. however, the 11th from the pof with mars, sun and mercury is generally considered more favourable. venus is in the 10th, while moon is in the 3rd from the pof as well which is positive.

the part of spirit is at 7 libra with it's ruler venus in the first house counting from the po spirit. this is considered very positive as i understand it. doing houses off the pos gives jupiter in the 9th and saturn in the 3rd..

using the idea of triplicities to define the first, second and third part of endes life using moon as the first part, venus as second and mars as third would suggest the first part would be okay with moon in the 10th, while the 2nd part with venus in the 5th in libra would be positive overall. the 3rd part mars in the 6th is not as favourable. i still haven't figured out how to weigh the sign position verses the house position but from what i read, the house position is more central. both 2nd and 3rd part rulers are in their own signs whichi think would be more positive then not, but i haven't read up on ende and know next to nothing about him..

the only modern technique i would throw in here that suggests a surprising rise to greater eminence and succes happens to be uranus at the midpoint to jupiter/midheaven.. the part of spirit also happens to be on this same midpoint and while i know i am not going to read about this in any traditional astrology book, i like to keep an open mind that it might suggest the success that you ponder and look for in this chart.

regarding einstein, his part of fortune is in the whole sign house 10th with other planets and the ruler of the pof is mars in the 10th house from the part of fortune. this is considered quite positive to have the ruler of the pof in the 10th from the pof. another signature considered very favourable is jupiter in the 11th from the pof.

part of spirit is at 20 libra with the ruler angular in the 7th - positive in itself. the other benefic jupiter is in the 5th from pos, mars in the 4th, mercury and saturn in the 7th - essentially a lot of angularity which is considered favourable from a hellenistic point of view as i understand it.

the triplicity breakdown on einsteins life will have venus for the 1st part, moon for the 2nd part and mars for the 3rd part. both venus and mars are angular which is considered a blessing, while the moon is cadent which is not considered favourable. i don't know the details on einsteins life but this is what my limited understanding of how to use the triplicities gives me.

When I was an undergraduate at Imperial College in London during the early '70s, our maths lecturer was a colourful character called Stan Raimes. Stan Raimes was very dismissive of Einstein, saying that his fame was due to the marketing and promotion of his wife.

Saturn, ruler of the 7th, is in the 10th.

from whole sign houses point of view einstein has 4 planets in the angles. he fails the wisdom test, lol..

on the other hand, planets above the horizon line and especially in the angles - near the ascendant, descendant or midheaven are said to support greater publicity and recognition. it is a worthwhile conversation where we could bring in many examples to agree or disagree with this viewpoint.

another carden quote "91. It is next to impossible that they that have never a planet above the earth, nor in the Ascendant of their nativities, should either live long or accomplish any great matters in the world."

i don't know that i agree with carden, but maybe someone will find an example to confirm his opinion. brad pitt just became a nobody, unless a planet in the ascendant can mean 14 degrees below the ascendant. hard to know how carden views houses or planets in the ascendant.. remember traditional astrologers from the time of these sayings didn't use the outer 3 planets..

Just a cursory look at Einsteins chart, the major themes that jump out are:

Sun and 3 planets in the 10th hse of honors & achievement
Part of Fortune in the 10th house
All, except sun, have and Exalted, Angular ruler! Pretty good chance of success here! Angular and exalted ruler Mars, overcame Venus detriment, (except his love life), of course this is about the 10th and honors, achievement.

Aries, ever the pioneer, and discoverer, ruler mars very powerfully exalted and angular, providing the drive and tenacity towards the great achievement! Pretty good chance of succeeding here!

Jupiter, in the 9th in Aquarius, traditional ruler in 10th!! ( in and of itself a good chance of success!)

Jupiter in an Air Sign of Aquarius,(out of the box thinking, independent, highly mental), and (Jupiter) gives great expansion to his thinking / philosophy of higher ideas in Theoretical physics, which he worked on and pondered for many, many years until he got it right! 9th house also gives honors.

Saturn in Aries, Angular, in 10th and in its Fall, here caused delays, and obstacles in his work of how the cosmos worked, his theoretical physics. Saturn here also caused the DELAY in getting the Nobel Peace Prize 17 years AFTER he had developed the theory!! But also gave him great discipline to stay with it and work, work, work (Saturn) on it!! Saturn builds strong foundations, which is what Einstein did, layed the foundation for quantum physics, among his many discoveries. Gave him plenty of tenacity to continue.

It is interesting to NOTE: (all you traditionalists just ignore this part)

His trine of Uranus and Neptune (both rulers angular in 10th) and that both of these planets (Uranus instrumental in the discovery of Neptune) Neptune being the ONLY planet located through mathematical predictions rather than through regular observation.

So now I am watching for mathematical abilities in charts, based on placement of Neptune and Uranus.

Anyway, just a quick look at his sign and what popped into my head as I look at at.

Your statements make some things clearer.

The statement from Geoffrey brought me to consider
that Einstein needed the help from other people developing
his theories.
So he needed also the help of Marcel Gro?mann for developing the General Relativity theory.
Marcel Gro?mann was a mathematican who had knowledge about tensor calculus (necessary for the General relatvity).
And once Einstein wrote to a young student, he had always been not that good in mathematics.

So Einstein had, despite his outstanding intiutive abilities, some handicaps.
As Saturn rules 7, it can also stand for partners who work together with Einstein while Einstein alone collects the honor. Some people say also that his first wife (who was a theoretical physicist, too) had helped him with the special relativity theory.

But the helpers had not what Einstein had: a great intuition.
This intuition led him to his basic ideas, while other people helped him to develop the complete theory.
The other co-workers would have probably not been able to have these splendid basic ideas.

As MorningSun pointed out, this intuition is indeed shown by Uranus, ruled by Mercury and in a trine with Neptune (Uranus + Neptune = surprising intuitive inspirations).

As MorningSun pointed also out, the Lot of Fortune is in 10,
also a strong indication for success - despite Saturn in Fall.

The Lord of 10 (and of 9) is in 8. Saturn as the Lord
of 10 indicates severe problems, but Saturn als the Lord
of Nine also indicates interest in occult and secret
sciences. The latter is indeed the case for Michael Ende
who was interested in such topics like Kabbalah and
related issues.
But the Lord of the Lord of 10 is Jupiter, accidentally
strongly posed near the Ascendent. I think only he can
indicates success of his books; the presence in Gemini
indicates success related to exchange, communication
and studies.
But does the Exile in Gemini not reduce his success?

I can only find two explanations:

FIRST EXPLANATION:

As Michael Ende wrote about his literal work, he fought
against the too strong dominance of the rationalistic view
in our civilisation and claimed that also poetry, fantasy,
spirituality is necessary for life. But in our civilisation,
he saw these issues too underrepresented. An essay from him
about these things has the title
"Thoughts of an central-European indigene" where he described
his genre (fantasy, poetry, all what trancends pure rationalism)
as a "reservation" within the "civilisation desert".
This corresponds to the strong (i.e. angular position) Jupiter
being in EXILE. So this exile does not need to stand directly for
misfortune.

SECOND EXPLANATION:

A possible answer is that this Exile may be not such
bad like an exile of Venus in Aries or the Moon in Capricorn.
This would also agree fith the first explanation.

As Morinus stated, exiles in the sign of equal sex
(Saturn in Leo) is not as bad as exiles in signs of opposite
sex (Mars in Taurus). But as Mercury and Jupiter are not
enemies and the nature of Gemini (ruled by Mercury)
is not a direct opposite of the Jupiter principle
(like as Libra to Mars).
So may be the Exile of Jupiter in Gemini is not so bad
that it impedes Ende's successes.

Another case which points in the same direction is the horoscope
of Isaac Newton:

I look on Mercury, indicating his mental abilities.
Mercury (2nd house, near the cusp of 3rd house) squares Saturn
and is in its Exile in Sagittarius.

I can at least explain why this square does NOT mean stupidity
and limited intelligence:
1) Mercury is oriental
2) Mercury has a right square to Saturn, which means that
Mercury takes an active part in this square
3) Mercury and Saturn are ruled by Jupiter who is in its
own domicile.
Keeping these points in mind the Mercury-Saturn aspects
stands rather for mathematical abilities than for
limited intelligence. But on the other hand he is said to be stubborn,
insisting strongly on this right in his argues with other
scientist like Leibniz (who has firstly discovered differential
and integral calculus?) and with Huygens (Is light a wave or
a particles?).

But coming to the point: This mercury is also in its exile!
As this exile is in Saggitarius, this corresponts to the exile
of Jupiter in Mercury. But as the Exile in Jupiter did not
spoil Ende's belletristic successes, the Exile of Mercury in
Saggitarius did not inhibit Newton's outstanding mental
and mathematical abilities.


I have tried to find some explanations, but I am afraid that
they are still too speculative and constructed. The explanations
in astrology should be as straight-forward as possible, so
that they can be immediately followed when they are given.
Maybe someone else can give some better explanations than above

My interpretation is not based on traditional ways, but maybe some will find them interesting. All the charts were rectified using Alexander Marr's techniques, including his system for finding the Pre Natal Epoch. To each chart I'm adding the heliocentric positions.
1. Albert Eistein
Using 38 events I rectified his chart to 10.57.44LMT Asc 4Can47'. Helio Mercury trine Uranus (both geo and helio), sextile MC (orb 11'!) ? this is one of the most appropriate aspect for originality, especially when Uranus is 180 MC.
Sun in 10th in conjunct Part of Fortune.
In many cases it was found that the Epoch is reflecting the destiny much more sharply than the radix. Einstein's epoch is casting for 15 June 1878 19.33.44 GMT Asc 28Sag31'. In this chart MC is sextile Uranus, trine Sun, square helio Jupiter.
Mercury trine Jupiter in Airy signs. Helio Mercury sextile helio Jupiter.
All these aspects reflect his genius and immense popularity.
2. Michael Ende
Using the 5 events I have for him, I rectified his chart to 17.05.08 CET Asc 29Tau16'.
MC SEXTILE Uranus, trine rising helio Jupiter and trine helio Venus- enough indications for popularity and success. Helio Mercury trine Jupiter!
Vertex conjunct Venus and helio Venus conjunct Part of Fortune.
His epoch is most probably should be cast for 17 Feb 1929 2.38.20 UT Asc 20Sag23'. In this chart Venus, ruler of MC is in opposition to MC. Mercury trine helio Mercury in Airy signs- aspect that is in many charts of famous authors. Helio Mercury is also 150 Jupiter and Mercury 90 helio Jupiter.
