dear group,

i was hoping someone could shed some light on the significance and meaning of the 4th house ruler in horary as it pertains to the end of the matter.

do you pay attention to what planet rules the 4th cusp and where it is located, its strength, so on, even if the horary question is not a 4th house matter? what if the chart indicates perfection, but the 4th ruler isn't very strong?

any thoughts are appreciated!

I usually don't pay too much attention to the 4th house as the end of the matter unless the aspects involve the planetary rulers or the house cusp degrees are significant, i.e., 29 Taurus, "The Weeping Sisters."

Of course, if you're actually asking about a 4th house matter, then naturally that house would be of prime importance.

I have a feeling it might be useful to look at the 4th house as "end of the matter" when interpretation of the rest of the chart is coming to naught: eg all the other interpretative factors are evenly balanced, or seem to conflict with each other. Of course sometimes we get charts like that. Then it might be useful to look at the 4th House ruler and assess its placement and strength, as hopefully indicating the clear result or outcome of the question being considered.

I also don't use the 4th house as the end of the matter. I do use it in a slightly different but more traditional way and that is that the 4th house can show the foundations of the situation. I also don't automatically go to the 4th house unless it is emphasized in some way, such as my a contact made to it's ruler.

To me the 4th house is all about things that are strong and are at the bases of the situation. The 4th house signifies your father, who is the source of your life. It rules the foundation of buildings, the part of the building that has to be the strongest, but is also down low, and in the dark, just as the Sun is at it's darkest at midnight. Mines and buried treasures are ruled by the 4th house. It also rules the grave for similar reasons.

So I have alwys been somewhat skeptical of the whole end of the matter concept, and have used it more along the lines above, and if the the 4th house is emphasized in a chart that doesn't involve your father, or land, or gold mines, etc., I'd use it to signfy the foundations of the situation.

I just did a chart where the Moon made a contact to Mercury in its detriment. Mercury ruled the 4th house, and was in the 10th house. Mercury in its detriment means lies, and all kinds of pointless talk. The Moon making a trine to Mercury, and it being in the 10th house showed that the lies would all come out. Because Mercury ruled the 4th house showed that the situation was one based on lies and all kinds of meaninless talk. The trine showed that even though the lies would come out, the consequences wouldn't be that bad.

mark, i really like your interpretation of the 4th house.. my natal sun and venus in leo are located here, and i always are trying to find out more about, knowing that the 4th house is about more then only your house and family... myself i thought the 4th house was more about the mother, the nurturing one, als cause i have my venus here, and my father i did not speak to for like 8 years, he is no part of my life...

I don't know much about natal, but what little I do know is that the techniques are very different from horary. What I said I meant to apply just to horary. But I would still agree that the 4th house shows the father, while the 10th house shows the mother, among other things.
