SAN - Syzygy ante nativitatem in Profession 1 by lucas_Barreto I have a question pertaining to the SAN. I have heard metions to it in texts of several ancient authors, (like masha'allah) in using the moons first application to delineate profession. What's the logic in doing this, and does anyone attest to this techniques efficacy? I kind of tried it out a bit, wasn't too convinced, and haven't really seen any one really using it. 3 by lucas_Barreto Masha'allah (apparently citing rhetorius, who credits anubio with this view as per Ben Dykes's translation) says on delineating profession that "the moon even, being released from the coming together or the opposition and applying to venus, bestows and manages ventures...to jupiter makes the native prosperous and decent...to mars a military man...Mercury a scribe or teacher." So its the planet that the moon first applies to after a solar conjunction or opposition... but I haven't found the value in this kind of analysis, even though the SAN is taken into account when calculating the hyleg... 4 by zoidsoft In which chart? The one that is actually happening after the SAN or where the Moon applies (as if from the SAN) in the nativity? Logically I think it must be the latter or some other derivation because the former leads to the same profession to anyone born within those 2 weeks up to the next conjunction or vice versa. 5 by lucas_Barreto Well, that's what's weird. Apparently it's the moon's first application after the SAN, so it seems that it would be the same professional indicator for 2 weeks. James Holden's translation of Rhetorius writes that out explicitly on his comment on that passage: "Presumably this means to look at the Syzygy that preceded the native's birth and inspect the moon's application at the time" Which is why I've come to ask if anyone uses this in this manner. I seem to recall seeing Ile and Steven Birchfield using this but I'm not certain. Quote Tue Mar 04, 2014 3:39 am
6 by zoidsoft I think that there must be something wrong because the same profession can not be said to be held for everybody within the same fortnight. There is a general principle found in Valens in particular where he says that some charts are more telling than others (using the term chrematistikos). He also seems to suggest that certain techniques should be modified (such as the placement of fortune or spirit or the lots of necessity and eros) to indicate whether some place is telling or not. It might be that this technique should only be used under certain circumstances. Too bad we don't have an indication as to which they are.
