Is he My Soul Mate? Question about technique.

1
Hi everyone. So my question is: how would you go about choosing the correct significators in a question like this? The 7th is about relationships of all kinds and the 5th is about love and romance amongst other things... If you were to ask "Is he/she my soul mate?" and NOT "Will I have a relationship with my soul mate?" would you choose the 5th/11th axis to signify the soul mate type of love? Since people romanticize the notion of the soul mate? Let me know what you think.

Here is a chart I cast earlier if anyone needs a visual reference. As you can see the 1st/7th house significators are in negative reception but there is reception between the 5th/11th rulers. And the turned 5th/ radical 11th ruler is in exaltation in the 1st house receiving the radical 5th house ruler. The late rising of course suggests querent already knows the answer.

What do you mean by "soul mate"? Do you mean "Is this the person I am meant to be with in this life?" or "Is this the person I am most spiritually connected with?" or "Is this my spiritual other half?" or something like that?

There are no set rules for the "spiritual other half" as far as I know in horary. I don't know if the ancients even believed in that.

But for questions about compatibility and long-term relationships, I think it's better to use the natal charts of both parties. And even then you or the astrologer has to decide what defines soul mate in synastry. I could say some things but there is nothing to verify it. After all, how do you prove soul mate status?

I would look at the two natal charts and judge it for compatibility like any other synastry work. But for spiritual matters, I would also look for house 9 (house of spirituality), planets Jupiter and Saturn, and of course Sun and Moon.

Hi. By "soul mate" I guess I mean "are they the love of my life?" I think it's more romantic than spiritual in the way I think of it. It's like fairy tale love you see in movies or something. Something exceptionally romantic and beyond comparison with any other loves. This is how I personally view the Soul Mate.

5
But I guess you're right that "soul mate" would have different definitions for different people. Some people do think of the concept of the soul mate as something spiritual. But then the soul mate is always about romance above all. I could see how both the 9th and 5th could represent the concept.

The bottom line, though, is that it is a deeply romantic concept. Even though it is somewhat of a "belief". In a sense, it does require a belief in fate and love everlasting. Fate is a belief. But the basis of the concept is romantic.

Hi StarzQ:

Sorry, I couldn't get the link to work.

Just in general, I personally would not use the fifth house for anything related to a "soulmate type of love". In my mind there is something too ephemeral about that house that it doesn't seem to capture the spirit of someone you've known for "lifetimes" or at depth, IF that's what your (or the querant's) idea of soulmate might mean.

I think what might help is if you can pinpoint what soulmate means to you (or the querant) personally in a more earthbound way ie: is it more in the nature of a friendship (11th house), a partnership (and you would generally include a sexual relationship with this) (7th house), or even a teacher (them)-student (you) relationship (9th house). Then look at the dignities/aspect/reception between the ASC significator (the querent) and significator of the house that most closely matches the idea of soulmate. I think it's important to understand your/ the querant's point of view as it's your/the querant's question that leads to the creation of the chart.

Here's a link to the descriptors of the houses:

If you are interested in the modern synastry point of view on soulmates this might be helpful:

I can't say whether it works or not; I haven't gotten round to analyzing all my relationships yet. :D

Hope this helps.

I see we were posting at the same time - hope my questions/info are not redundant. :)

Cheers.[/quote]

No, its okay. Thank you for answering. I'm now sort of thinking this question wasn't a good one for horary because the rising is at 29 degrees. I think I'm looking for more insight into the nature of whatever I feel but it definitely was not a relationship question. I think this question was a 5th house matter but it's too vague. The Moon is also void unless you count an out of sign aspect.

The 5th house is about casual love affairs as a form of amusement: brief flings, flirting, "just one of those things." Right up there with going to horse races or the theatre. The 7th is the house of permanent relationships, notably marriage.

And please take those stars out of your eyes! It's too hard to see real, actual human relationships through them. What happens if your soul mate doesn't pick up his socks, turns out to be a mean binge-drinker, or finds you lacking in some way?

No thanks. You can keep stars out of yours but I like the stars :) I'm really kidding. Its just the assumption that someone you don't know is distorting reality so much they believe they have a soul mate that can't be anything but perfect is pretty far fetched from my standpoint.

In my opinion the 5th can have deeper meaning depending on the context. Not all romances are shallow and just for amusement only. The 5th is also the house of love.

It depends whose astrology you look at. Traditionally the 5th is the house of one's children and amusements. The 7th rules committed relationships, notably marriage. Venus joys in the 5th house, but if your chart's Venus is in detriment in the 8th house, or something, I don't know what that would get you. In Hellenistic times, the 5th was the house of "good fortune," so a planet there would gain some benefit.

But if we take your point about love and the 5th house, the modern concept of soul mate nevertheless demands something far more profound than simply being in love. You're familiar with the girl who is "in love with love" more than with another person in particular? Moreover, a soul mate might be a close friend or a sibling, v. a romantic/sexual partner.

In my experience, a soul mate can go in and out of your life, you may not form a romantic/sexual relationship with him/her no matter how strong the attraction, and these relationships may come with their own set of problems-- the purpose of which is your own personal growth and maturation, not your "happily ever after" scenario.

I've had 3 serious "loves of my life," two of whom I married at different times.

In modern natal astrology, you are perhaps better off looking at the vertex, which is associated with fateful encounters.

Have you got a copy of J. Lee Lehman, The Martial Art of Horary Astrology? On page 19 she deconstructs the soul mate question, suggesting that it is probably a surrogate for something else. Oftentimes it stems from a New Age belief in past-lives astrology. In consulting with clients who ask a soul mate question, usually Lehman feels that "committed relationship" is at the heart of the question.

On p. 93 she gives an example of a soul mate question, and uses the 7th house, not the 5th.
Its just the assumption that someone you don't know is distorting reality so much they believe they have a soul mate that can't be anything but perfect is pretty far fetched from my standpoint.
Really? I read a lot of on-line charts for people. We never know the querents. I've seen a lot of questions like, "Is he my soul mate?" Or "when will I meet my soul mate?" I've never seen a question about a "soul mate" that showed a strong sense of realism about committed romantic relationships. Typically the querent is not in a relationship at present but hopes for one; or has only recently established a relationship with someone she loves, and wonders if s/he's The One.

I see on another thread that you're unhappy with your marriage-- in which case, the grass will look greener and the possibilities more fertile somewhere else.
