It's impossible to know exactly, but I rather envisage it as two existing practices colliding (remember that culminating or 'transit' decans have a long history in Egypt, with symbolism that often agrees closely with later house symbolism) and giving rise to the tradition that has existed ever since -- including the tension between ecliptical and equatorial divisions which, if I am right, runs like a crack in the rock all the way back to the earliest times of horoscopic astrology. In other words, I doubt there ever was a pristine, perfect system of astrology that all practitioners agreed on, which also means that any attempts at recreating such a system are doomed, except as exercises of the imagination. Others may think differently.
