It's not a literary tradition, it's very much a living naming system that just happens to be different from that used in the English-speaking world. Leaving out the Abū would be similar (though inverse) to leaving out the -son in Mr Johnson and just calling him Mr John.

Yes, IMHO they are named as the father of their firstborn child (honorary name) , so Abū Maʿšar's firstborn is Maʿšar. Mr. Johnson is similar to Ibn Ezra - son of Ezra - Ezrason.

This did turn out to be very useful Ouranos, reread the entire section the article references and was reminded that it included all kinds of information related to reading the radix, profection, and SR for the year, not just in relation to the months. What’s really interesting is that he advises, for the radix, that we look at

• planet house position
• ASC position relative to the planet

That’s essentially where the planet will show its indication in the life and then how it will affect the life when it is activated by profection. Then he goes on to look at where the planet is relative to its domiciles, which shows its relative strength when the profection comes to that sign. And does the same again, locating the positions in the SR relative to the SR Asc and to the radix Asc, since the condition of the planet in the SR modifies the natal conditions, and the actual positions in the SR point to months in the year; so what initially looks like a bewildering number of comparisons are really specific timing guides for when various indications may be effected; time filters for indications, at least, I think that’s what is going on.
