13 by AlexMc I was told just today that Venus in her own sign "negates" Combustion. Is that true? I thought combustion was one of the worst afflictions a planet can have regardless of sign I would add Abu Ma?sar to the list of esteemed astrologers mentioned by MarkF. Abu Ma?sar says of a planet dignified combust (burned), ?The reason why people who say that a star which becomes burned in its own domicile or exaltation does not offend, are mistaken?when Venus and the Moon become burned they are similar to quicksilver that if we throw it into the fire, the fire escapes from it like from something different from its nature and is not able to tolerate it?.when Venus is burned it becomes absolutely weak and without strength?? (Libri Mysteriorum) The Hellenistic astrologers also agreed. I do not know where the belief that domicile negates combustion originated from, however, I have heard it too. I suspect it may be a case of mistaken identity in natal work. The Sun definitely takes up the qualities (of the combust planet) into itself and is strengthened thereby (through conjunction). The combust planet is unable to function according to its nature, nor produce its effects, but the Sun is even more effective for good or ill depending upon its condition. For example, when Sun becomes more venusian (Venus in domicile) in its solar expression people mistake that for Venus' strength and declare a negation of Venus? combustion. Thus, mistaken identity. I have never seen a combust planet in domicile or exaltation that was not burned. I know this is anecdotal. If anyone thinks they have one, natal or horary, I would be interested to see it discussed. Mark, before I comment on the thought there might be someone else, I need more info from the querent on why the 6th house. For example, is there a connection through work? 14 by Sue I posted this earlier but it seems to have disappeared so I will try again. Of course the same thing can be said as to why Lilly and these other traditional sources say that a planet is only combust when both it and the Sun are in the same sign. Mark, Do you have any references for combustion only being in the same sign prior to Lilly mentioning it in CA? I realise that we have had the combustion conversation at length but I am curious to know whether you can actually point to any other author who says that combustion can only take place in the same sign and writing prior to Lilly. I am not questioning you but rather whether this really is a condition for combustion in traditional astrology (combustion by sign) or whether this was an adaptation of tradition by Lilly. This is something I have researched at length in the past and I was unable to find any such reference. In fact, I found evidence from almanacs of the early 1100's that astrologers (at least some of them) considered combustion only by degrees to the Sun and disregarded sign boundaries. 15 by MarkF Sue, I'm looking but like I lot of things I can't remember the source. I'll look more and ask some others about this. I never understood the philosophical basis to let a sign boundary affect combustion either. But it has made for some interesting charts where the planets approach combustion but don't meet it before one switches signs. BTW, what did you think about Jupiter in the 7th here? Another woman? 16 by Sue I think you will be hard pressed to find a reference that mentions sign boundaries. Because Lilly made it so clear that he only considered combustion in the same sign, people now assume that it has always been this way. They are assuming something that is not there. I have looked at as many of the traditional texts that I could get access to and none of them refer to combustion being in sign only. I studied an astrological almanac from Cairo, written in the 1100s, that listed the days and positions of the Moon. This was translated by David Pingree. The list clearly states that the Moon, which was in Aquarius, was combust the Sun, which was in Capricorn. BTW, what did you think about Jupiter in the 7th here? Another woman? No, I don't think so. As you stated, Jupiter is in his 1st house, not his 7th. There is also no aspect between Mars and Jupiter. Although there is some reception, I do not see it as significant enough to argue for strong contact between Mars and Jupiter. Also, the Moon is applying to Jupiter. The Moon is significator of the querent, not the quesited. So the Moon will aspect Mars and then Jupiter (discounting Neptune for the moment). Chances are that Jupiter might relate to her in some way. Jupiter is in her 7th house of relationships, not his. Quote Sat Oct 07, 2006 7:04 am
17 by MarkF As you stated, Jupiter is in his 1st house, not his 7th. That's just why I am pretty sure that Jupiter is another woman here. Jupiter is in his house, i.e., it's a person who's with him physically, on his mind. Jupiter is also disposed by Mars, so it's a person who he's let into his life and has some influence over. I'm comfortable with the fact that there is no aspect between them because the chart isn't focused on them, but on Moondance7 and this guy. As far as the Moon making an aspect with Jupiter, I see that not so much as that she will meet her, though that is a possibility, but more as that she will have some problems with her presence. That fits with all the other parts of the chart - the combustion, prohibition, his lack of essential dignity (he's a cad - he's not faithful), and with that final opposition with Saturn. 18 by Moondance7 Yes, that probably is another woman. The quesited and the querent worked together for several years in a health care field. Quesited is a nurse, devoted to his job. This man also owns and manages numerous apartment buildings around the city where he lives and his daily life is extremely busy. The 6th might represent this in the horary. Thanks for all the input. 19 by Sue Moon will next be square to Jupiter. I have a sneaking suspicion that Jupiter could signify another woman who this guy is seeing. Jupiter's contact is with the Moon (querent's co-significator). The contact is with her, not with him. Jupiter does not have any contact with Mars except for some mutual reception and that it is being disposited by Mars. Without an aspect between Mars and Jupiter, there is nothing happening. The Moon, on the other hand, will go from Mars to Jupiter. Jupiter is in the 7th house of relationships, that is, Moondance's relationships. It is in the 1st house of the quesited. If Jupiter relates to him then it is about himself. As Deb pointed out, there is a lot of secrecy involved, but this does not necessarily mean he is involved with someone else. He may well be but I do not believe that is is signified by Jupiter in the 7th house. If you want to see Jupiter as the 'other' person then it is more likely that it is the other person for Moondance. But it is not necessary to assume that Jupiter represents a person. Jupiter rules her 8th and 12th houses. In a few days, the Moon will come to join Venus and Mars in combustion. Quote Sun Oct 08, 2006 1:27 am
