The planetary joys may play a factor too.

Moon joys in the third house.
Mercury joys in the first house.
Venus joys in the fifth house.
Sun joys in the ninth house.
Mars joys in the sixth house.
Jupiter joys in the eleventh house.
Saturn joys in the twelth house.

So if we do not use the sign=house thing, we have "natural" planets connected to houses = Chaldean rulers and Planets that rejoice in that house:-

1st H : Saturn & Mercury
2nd H : Jupiter
3rd H : Mars & Moon
4th H : Sun
5th H : Venus & Venus (wow! - really pleasure)
6th H : Mercury & Mars
7th H : Moon
8th H : Saturn
9th H : Jupiter & Sun
10th H : Mars
11th H : Sun & Jupiter
12th H : Venus & Saturn

With these combinations, I think we can get better description of the meanings of each house:-

The not so good houses are those that are in aversion to the ascendant viz. the 2nd, the 12th, the 6th and the 8th. Each has at least one malefic either ruling (Chaldean ruler) or finds joy in with the exception of 2nd H whose Chaldean ruler is Jupiter. In fact this is the "best" house of all the houses in aversion to ascendant. It does not represent the "bad" things in life (6-sickness, 8-death, 12-undoing/imprisonment). The 2nd represents your possesion and substance (very much Jupiter when he is materialistic).

The 2nd H does not represent spirituality though spirituality is one of Jupiter's meanings because the 2nd is in aversion to first and it is below the horizon - representing the lower desires - unlike the ninth and eleventh which are above the horizon - representing the higher meanings of life.

The other 2 houses that have Jupiter happen to be the 9th and 11th and both have Sun and Jupiter as Chaldean ruler and Joy (in reverse order). The 9th though cadent is considered as house of good fortune; it gives spirituality, religion, wisdom, journeys...The 11th gives the place of acquisition, house of good spirit, friends...

The 5th has Venus and Venus - house of pleasures + pleasures! Sexual pleasures, sensual pleasures, children (the ancients must have thought that children are the greatest pleasures one can have), gifts, ...

The 1st H has Saturn and Mercury, the form, structure, mind, head...

The 3rd H has moon and Mars, brothers (for the reasons mentioned in previous post), goddes, short journeys, divination,...

The 4th H has Sun, father, land (as you get your labnd from your father which then gives you your title or vice versa)...

The 6th has Mercury and Mars, messengers (as of slaves), toils, sufferings, illnesses

The 7th has moon, relationships...

The 8th has Saturn, death

The 10th has Mars, action,...?

The 12th has Venus and Saturn, difficulties, restrictions, imprisonment, hospitals, corrupted pleasures (Venus-Saturn), ...

As for me, I do not use any of the modern co-rulers of houses. I still use the Chaldean natural rulers but more for academic purpose.

I am curious as to what you mean by using the Chaldean natural rulers for academic purpose. I haven't thought about this a great deal in terms of practical application. Of course, Lilly gives each house co-signification in the Chaldean order so that the 1st house has Aries (as the first sign) and Saturn as co-significators right around to Pisces as the 12th sign and Venus as co-ruler. I think Lilly says something along the lines that the Arabs used many other house divisions but that he did not see any sense in them. And the faces follow the Chaldean order. The Chaldean order was used a lot for philosophical purposes though and this is what I have found interesting.

Okay, that makes sense. I think you can tell a lot about the various authors and the systems they use by the emphasis that is placed on order of the planets. As a philosophical system there is so much more revealed than the mere planets themselves. One of the difficulties with fully understanding the Mithraic religion has been an unusual ordering of the planets. The order of the planets ? Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Moon, Sun and Saturn ? does not correspond to any known order but is believed to be a compromise between the days of the week and the old Chaldean order of planets. Like many groups, they had a philosophy that believed in the descent of the soul through the various levels and then their ascent again when they die. They also had the seven levels of initiation that members had, the highest being Pater or Saturn.
