Temperament: I use two methods to check on each other. One is the method outlined by John Frawley in The Real Astrology Applied, and the other is the method devised by Dorian Greenbaum in her book Temperament Astrology?s Forgotten Key. Most of the time these two methods agree but this time they produced slightly different results. Frawley?s method gives a slight edge to a combination of sanguine/choleric. Greenbaum?s shows a melancholic with a nice balance of the other three. I lean towards Frawley?s in this case since Sheppard was successful at everything he tried and heat rises naturally. But it is probably fair to say that there is no overwhelming temperament characteristic in his makeup. Like everything else about him, his chart is hard to figure.
One website described him as outwardly modest but possessing an inner arrogance. I would associate arrogance with Mars and Mars is in the 12th house of secrets in his domicile, Scorpio. The significator of the manners and the Lord of the Geniture is Jupiter in Sagittarius on the ASC. Success and good fortune seemed to follow young Sam, at least for a while. But as Deb noted about her sister, he would have dramatic ups and downs. He goes from wonderful life to convicted murderer, to exonerated victim, to disgraced physician, to professional wrestler, and hopeless alcoholic and drug addict, to an early death. Those are dramatic swings.
His son, managing his estate has spent decades trying to get him exonerated of the crime by proving someone else did it. There were several suspects, but the strongest one was one Richard Eberling, who while serving time for another murder make a half-baked confession while delirious and near death. He died before anything could be made of it or charges brought. The son also brought wrongful conviction suit against that state of Ohio, and although he was subsequently acquitted, and these cases are routinely won by the plaintiffs, Sheppard lost this one.
Does the chart show a man capable of murder? Is he callous enough, or cold enough or unfeeling enough to kill his high school sweetheart, mother of his only child and mother of his unborn child? I tried to find personality traits all over the web to no avail. All the websites describe his success and the crime he was charged with. I found very little about the man. But the Moon moving from Mars in the 12th to Mercury Lord 7, we have death bringing violence to the spouse. But Mars is in and rules the 12th house of secret enemies. So death brings the secret enemy to the spouse is valid as well.
Primary directions using the 5:30 am birth time are not too helpful. There are numerous directions of soft aspects, but one is note worthy, using Naibod, Mars, Lord 12, is square to the Moon in zodiac, and the hit is exact five days prior to his conviction. Looking at the chart I really don?t see how that is possible unless it is a converse direction or the Moon?s motion is taken into consideration. I?m taking it from a computer printout.
If we progress the chart to July 4 1954, it shows Mars, lord 12, progressed to the natal ASC. Mars has actually separated from the conjunction, but if the birth time is off by only about three minutes, the conjunction would be nearly exact. His progressed ASC is about to change from Sagittarius to Capricorn and again if the birth time were a few minutes later than stated the change would be between July 4 and December 21, 1954, the day he was convicted. Even using the 5:30 birth time, the solar return is worth a look.

I used the birthplace instead of the town he lived in, Bay Village, Ohio. Since they are so close together, it would produce a chart virtually identical to the Cleveland Chart. The SR ASC is in the 8th house of the nativity. This does not mean he murders or is murdered for that matter, only that 8th house issues will confront him this year. Interestingly it is in partile trine to the natal ASC, which is usually considered to be favorable. The Moon in the SR takes on particular importance as it is on its own natal contra antiscion point and on the degree of the lord of the prenatal eclipse, which is located in the 8th house of the prenatal eclipse. Mars in the SR has returned to its natal sign of Scorpio and is conjunct Saturn also returned to the sign it held in the nativity. This time Mars rules the 8th and first. The SR Sun is in the 10th, the spotlight is sure on him, and SR Jupiter, Lord ASC in the nativity, is retrograde in detriment. Jupiter is on the fixed star Belletrix and Robson tells us it gives, sudden dishonor. Jupiter is opposite the prenatal eclipse point, and of course, the natal Moon.

16 Cancer 56 rises
South node on the ASC does not portend well for the coming month. The Sun and Moon are in a tight square and the Sun is on Rigel. Robson: ?Bold courageous, insolent, unruly temper, hasty actions, bloodshed, many enemies, great good fortune, military success.? This is typical of the ups and downs Sheppard experiences. This placement, Sun with Rigel, runs from bloodshed and enemies to great good fortune.
The MC IC axis is the reverse of the nativity and within five degrees of exact. The Sun Moon square of the solar return is repeated Retrograde Saturn is nearing his natal position for the second time. Sam has been going through a Saturn return in this period. And perhaps tellingly, LR Jupiter opposes SR Mercury, the ruler of the natal 7th, by antiscion.

20 Capricorn 08 rises
The Sun and Moon are again square. Jupiter, lord of the natal ASC, significator of the manners and Lord of the Geniture, is setting. Venus, lady of the 4th house of endings in the LR is tightly conjunct (one minute orb) Saturn planet of bondage and ruler of the LR ASC. SLR Mercury tightly opposes SR Jupiter. Sam goes to prison for ten years.
Next time, we?ll look at the events surrounding his release and ultimate freedom.
