We have two charts left, numbers four and five. In order to squeeze as much out of this as I can, I?m going to discuss the individuals, but not tell you which chart is which until the end. You could sneak a peek down I suppose, but just who is so childish as to do that? The real purpose here is to hone one?s skills.

Before we begin in earnest, I know what question is on everyone?s lips. If he wasn?t moderating, how would Tom have done on this exercise? Simple. I would have gotten it right.

So there are two charts left. One is our murderer and one is a woman I know and you don?t. Starting with her. She is bright, very witty, and quite attractive. Her chart is in my files under her nickname and when I was looking through the list I thought to myself, ?who the hell is that?? I picked the chart after I remembered, but only remembered something else a few days later. It seems when she was about 19, if I recall all this correctly, she was working at a convenience store late at night. An armed robber came in the store and she turned over all the cash she had. He became enraged that there was so little, took her outside and shot her in the leg. Although she recovered, the experience had to be terrifying. Despite some obvious talents she?s had her share of struggles. Since I don't have permission, I?m not going into kind of detail. Let?s say that things could have gone better for her, but she?s no killer.

Our murderer is a man named Harry Tracy (1875 ? 1902). Actually that isn?t his real name. He was born Harry Severn or Severns and lived the life of an outlaw. Not too much is known about his early life other than he once travelled with Butch Cassidy?s ?Hole in the Wall? gang. Prior to his final killing spree he is said to have been arrested for a killing but escaped before trial. Tracy made his living largely from robberies and he was finally captured in 1901 and sentenced to prison. On June 9, 1902, he and a partner escaped killing three guards and one or two civilians (depending on where you read it) in the process. This triggered a manhunt and media frenzy. Tracy would ultimately kill his partner who was also his brother-in-law before being discivered. Tracy was located at a ranch and soon a posse of 50 or more men went to get him. A gun battle broke out and Tracy was severely wounded in his leg. Hiding in the dark in a wheat field he may have ultimately bled to death from his wound, but chose instead to take his own life. Tracy is considered the last of the Old West desperadoes. One newspaper claimed:

"In all the criminal lore of the country there is no record equal to that of Harry Tracy for cold-blooded nerve, desperation and thirst for crime. Jesse James, compared with Tracy, is a Sunday school teacher." --
Seattle Daily Times July 3, 1902

I don?t know about that but it demonstrates the type of individual we?re dealing with.

Of the two charts does this man seem like the kind who would have four planets in great dignity like Chart 4? If you answered ?no? you?re right. Harry Tracy is chart number three. My lady friend Jennifer is chart number four.

You might think looking at her chart with Jupiter in Sagittarius, Mars in Capricorn, Sun in Aries, and Venus in Pisces that things would go really well for her. Not really. Despite some obvious gifts she?s had her share of ups and downs. As I noted above her intelligence is obvious and she is very, very quick witted and I always thought had good potential to be a writer. I lost touch with her a long time ago and have no idea where she is or how things are for her now. I hope they are well.

What is most striking about Tracy?s chart is that the only planets above the horizon are the malefics. Also with four planets in Scorpio everything goes back to Mars and Mars goes back to Saturn in the 8th. I?m not sure this is enough to brand a native a killer, but it isn?t nice or doesn?t seem so with hindsight working in my corner.

In the chart the part of fortune is on Algol. But this is a night chart and my computer calculates all charts using the day formula. So if you reverse, the part of spirit is on Algol and that?s probably worse. The MC is on Scheat a fixed star associated with Shipwrecks and Harry?s life was a shipwreck. Robson tells us:

?It causes extreme misfortune, murder, suicide, and drowning.?

Two out of three ain?t bad. Pollux rises:

?It gives a subtle, crafty, spirited, brave, audacious, cruel and rash nature, a love of boxing, dignified malevolence, and is connected with poisons.?

Spend a little time reading about Harry and you'll see that fits, but Robson isn?t done.

?If rising. Bad eyes, blindness, injuries to the face, sickness, wounds, imprisonment, ephemeral honor and preferment.?

When he committed suicide, Harry shot himself in the face near or through the eye. He was also, briefly, famous.

His temperament is very cold and I think that is worth looking at with caution. Some killers are going to have a lot of heat. I suppose it colors why they kill. Sharon Tate?s chart is cold but very wet as well.

Tracy killed as part of his work. He once supposedly said that he never killed a woman or child. He was apparently proud of that, although he wasn?t above threatening women and children with death if his wishes weren?t followed. That it was part of his work made it acceptable to him. This is the twisted part. This might be the key to unlocking the chart, if we knew where to find it. What is it that allows people to believe that robbing, raping, and murdering is somehow an acceptable form of behavior?

Thank you all again for all the effort put into this exercise.

Hello Tom,

I believe it should be something about Saturn.

Mars is a night planet in a night chart and it has the triplicity in Water signs, Cancer and Scorpio included.

But Saturn is against its hairesis and it's retrograde, and it does not love so much Cancer Ascendant. And it's in the malefic 8th house.

It is in agreement with the cold temperament you mentioned. And Moon is in Virgo, cold and dry sign, not far from IC, the coldest point of the chart.

About the temperament, Moon is in Mercury sign, exaltation and term.
Mercury is in Mars sign and triplicity, Mercury terms, in separating square with Saturn.

So the rational mind is more important for the native. And as you wrote Mars is in Saturn sign.

So according Ptolemy chapter:
Conciliated with Mars, and posited in glory, Saturn renders men reckless, over-diligent, free in speech....but, if thus connected, and not placed in glory, he will make men plunderers, robbers, adulterers, submissive to evil, seeking gain by their turpitude, infidels in religion, void of the common affections, mischievous, treacherous, thievish, perjurers, and sanguinary; eaters of unlawful food, familiar with guilt, assassins, sorcerers, sacrilegious, impious, violators of the tomb, and, in short, thoroughly depraved.

It makes sense?

I'd already done that before I read your comment....

Later:

I'm not sure I'd agree with all the hindsight analysis - or rather I think it would be very hard to take some of the factors into consideration without already knowing that this was a 'bad' person. For example, having the part of Fortune (or Spirit) in the same degree of the zodiac as my natal Sun would not be added to my list of ways to spot a murderer :)

Mars being so close to the descendant is something that I'd notice though.

A very interesting experiment. I expect Yuzuru will pipe up soon to say how it was obvious all along (but then he did split his risk by opting for two charts, so I think he only gets half a clap). Also, Olivia pointed out the fixed star contacts, and Sasha and Cassie went straight for number 3 so they get big applause. :' And you get big applause too, even though you made us suffer with this.

I hope you can repeat this experiment again with a similar approach using other reasons to be notable - like spot the chart of the millionaire/famous lawyer/single mother with 9 children.

The only thing that concerns me is that angularity is so important, and so we need to know that the timing of the chart is completely reliable.

Thanks Tom

You WOULD expect that I would brag, except that Tom used that same chart in another forum, and setting this tread aside, I delineate him as a very studious and calm person, probably a scholar!

So no treat to me!

Besides that, all of my considerations were based on the 9th house. Is this the right procedure ? Beats me ! But it was useful only because of this particular set of charts.

Chart 1 had lord of 9 mercury in virgo so I ruled Bob out
Chart 4? of Sharon Tate had exalted Jupiter in Cancer
Chart 5? - of Jennnifer had an exalted venus in the 9th

So, Tom begin this test saying that he hadn?t a clue if it was even possible to do so with astrology. I have to say that I also don?t know.

Me neither, and that?s one of the reasons why I suggested the format to Tom. Some years ago Sue Toohey and I were talking about the James Randi challenge, and I said that I couldn?t understand why an astrologer didn?t devise an experiment to astrologically identify the chart of a murderer against random selections. I was of the opinion (at that time) that it would be an easy thing to do. To try it out Sue sent me a collection of six horoscopes belonging to people that she knew personally or professionally. One of these was a murderer and I tried to choose which one it was. As I mentioned earlier, I agonised because the more I looked at the six charts, the more reasons I found to identify signatures of guilt, violence, ruthlessness, mental-disturbance, and so forth, until in the end I was convinced she was messing me around and had sent a collection of charts that all belonged to murderers. I agonised over that experiment, but with a little bit of question-asking and hinting I eventually eliminated them one by one. I got down to the last two and then went for the wrong chart. Sue also pointed out that with all my questions and her hints I?d actually ?cheated? all the way through the experiment ? so we both agreed that I should refrain from entering the Randi challenge with this.

I don?t want to take anything away from Sasha and Cassie who did so well and got the answer right, (and to be honest, if it had been chart no 4, I would have had no doubt that it was down to my astrological skill), but now that I?ve tried this twice and failed, I am going to admit that even if it can be done, it can?t be done by me.

(Sue was pleased to think it couldn?t be done, because she was strongly of the opinion that the birth chart could not show such fatalist events, because then it would have denied free will. Her opinion was that it could only show the kinds of challenges we face, not whether we overcome them or not).

Well, I believe that there is something more in a native than his/her chart, and it's quite impossible to read a chart blindly.

A couple of days ago a friend of mine showed me the chart of two twins born with 2 minutes span.

Their chart (same Ascendant degree) had all the requisites for eyes/heart ilness: required stars, constellations, aspects.

In real life one of the twin had a problem with eyes, the other with heart. How an astrologer could see this?

So I believe surely we can find several inputs if we know where we should search, but I'm not sure a blind experiment can have some result.

I don't want criticize Tom, I liked his thread very much, it's just I believe we are missing the soul, or Karma, or Providence, whatever we can call.

I agree. Hindsight is always 20-20. However the stars were pretty prophetic in this case and tying the stars to the chart may be a clue. The question I always ask myself when doing hindsight astrology is "Is this predictable?" The answer isn't always obvious, either.

As for accuracy. I got this chart from an old book Lois Rodden's The American Book of Charts (1980). The data was obtained from the Church of Light who in turn obtained the data in 1938 from his mother. Therefore the data is rated "A." I think that's about as good as we'll ever get. I'll try to stay with "A" and "AA" rated charts in the future.

The accuracy does present a problem with the stars. However the more data I reveal the easier it is to find the person on the web. I found two other charts of murderers for which there is almost no information on the web, but that works against me as well. I don't have a vast storehouse of murderer's biographical information in my head. They were both rated "B" anyhow.

I have an idea for a second round, but a lawyer's chart intrigues me. They're an unsavory lot, too. I'll do some hunting. I'd like to see some discussion of Tracy's chart if possible. It will be a couple of days before I can post another round and I think I'm going to use six charts this time.

OH and for Deb regarding Algol. Perhaps we should start calling Algol the astrologer's fixed star since you and John Frawley share the same birthday and therefore both have the natal Sun on Algol. Since there are only 365 days in the year (366 in every fourth year) there are millions of people with Sun on Algol and they all don't go around killing prison guards and their brothers-in-law.

John is working on a new less malefic interpretation of Algol based on one version of the myth and the idea that nothing created is evil therefore, Algol isn't inherently evil. In the version he refers to, the Medusa is a beautiful woman except for the snakes in her hair. Her gaze turns the gazer into stone, i.e. she kills his soul. But we don't have to look at her and she can be and was defeated.

The idea of Medusa's sensual beauty is the symbol for lust for the material and/or sensual in life. As stated above, this has the effect of killing the soul. Therefore, the challenge of Algol is whether or not to "pick up the sword" and overcome the more base desires to achieve an even greater reward than mere material or sensual pleasure. If the native does that, Algol provides some good.

Tracy lived to steal other people's money and therefore the fruits of their labor. He took the risky, but easy way to earn a living. He wanted to live well, but was unwilling to work for it the way decent people do. He "picked up the sword" not to kill the Medusa, but to give in to the seduction. Nice symbolism, perhaps, but hardly predictable.

yuzuru wrote: I am disappointed with her Jupiter. I would expect that a strong angular and exalted Jupiter (even being retrograde) would protect the native from this kind of evil harm.
I?ve been recently reading the Sahl / Masha?allah translation by Ben Dykes, and there it was said (I cannot find the exact quote) that retrogradation renders a planet weak ? a retrograde benefic in unable to act beneficently and a retrograde malefic likewise is weaker in its malevolence. One of my mistakes was that I saw an accidental debility, retrogradation, as a qualitative factor, when it was only a quantitative one. So I saw difficulties and malevolence, but couldn't see whether they could be found in the owner of the chart or in her circumstances.

Then there was another paragraph ? now I found it, it?s in the Fifty Judgments by Sahl, Judgment 36:
Likewise, if they [the Moon or the Lord of the Ascendant] were joined to malefic from the square aspect [in Sharon Tate?s chart the Moon is separating from Saturn and applying Mars, both in square aspects; Sahl uses moieties in conjunctions and whole sign aspects in other aspects ? Sari?s note], and benefics aspected from a trine aspect, the man will escape what happens to him in terms of that destruction, and he will fall into another; or he will hardly escape what happens to him in terms of the destruction, and he will not fall into another.
In a footnote Dykes explains that if a benefic (or Jupiter to be exact, because only Jupiter has power over Saturn the Greater Malefic) has a straight contact to a malefic, it can change its nature into good. But if ? like in this case ? Jupiter is in aversion with the malefics, its unable to deal with the evil directly.

This has been an educating exercise also from an philosophical / ethical point of view. How many of us have no malefic tendencies in his / her chart? When reading the delineations offered I thought that I?ll never again give my TOB to another astrologer! :)
