This shows her hedonistic lifestyle with bandmembers/groups and risk taking but does not appear to be too bad until the ruler is considered: Jupiter/Cancer/6th/retrograde with the Moon/Cancer is the same configuration as Kurt Cobain (his was in the 11th), who was also a heroin addict. In both cases Jupiter is the ruler of "the deadly place".

Example 16: Amy Carnevale (14 year old homicide victim. She was pregnant when her jealous 16 year old boyfriend stabbed her and concealed her body by weighing it down with blocks in a lake).

Fortune in Pisces, Spirit in Aquarius. The Lot of Basis is in Libra/2nd with Jupiter (ruler of the 4th and 7th). Jupiter is tightly trine Mars/Gemini/10th (3rd and 8th ruler) and sextile Sun/Leo/12th.
Ruler of Libra is Venus/Leo/12th with the Sun. This is an interesting example where the malign influence of the 12th house appears to be mitigated by Jupiter being on Basis (with Jupiter ruling the "good" 4th and 7th houses). This also raises the issue of whether the 2nd house is a "bad" house (being in aversion to the Ascendant) or not. My experience is that it is not a malefic house, and in the context of the Lot of Basis is probably a favourable house as the Lot of Basis is "the security of the Ascendant" which can also be thought of as the Ascendants second in the same manner as the 11th house is the 10th house's second (i.e the King's friends/allies, those who protect/enhance the native's carrer/reputation).

Example 8: Jan Aerts (Belgian cyclist, a racer and award winner, died aged 84).

Example 9: Gianni Agnelli (Business tycoon, Italian industrialist and the head of an auto empire. He was shot in the arm during WW2 service and was involved in two serious auto accidents, the first shattering his ankle and the second more serious accident smashed his jaw and leg. The leg became gangerous but he violently opposed amputation and spent 9 months recovering in bed. He had triple bypass surgery at the age of 59 and died aged 82).

Fortune in Scorpio, Spirit in Capricorn. Basis is in Aqaurius/3rd ruled by Saturn/Virgo/10th/Retrograde conjunct Jupiter (also retrograde). Saturn also rules the 2nd house and Jupiter rules the 1st and 4th. Saturn is opposed by the Sun (9th ruler) by a degree, an unfavourable configuration (perhaps lessened because the Sun rules a favourable house) as is the ruler of the lot being 8th from the lot. More research would have to be done to determine the influence of a retrograde planet ruling the Lot of Basis.

Spirit in Sagittarius, Fortune in Taurus. The Lot of Basis is in Aquiarius/7th ruled by Saturn/Scorpio/4th (ruler of the lot culminates with respect to the lot - very good). Saturn is with Mercury (2nd and 11th ruler). Jupiter/Aquarius on the lot rules the 5th and 8th houses.

Example 12: Pietro Badoglio (Italian military officer and Mussolini's chief of staff. He was premier of Italy for just under a year during which civil war broke out over the signing of an armistice. He died aged 85, apparently being "bitter and obscure" in his latter years).

Fortune in Aquarius, Spirit in Capricorn. Lot of Basis is in Leo/1st ruled by Sun/Libra/3rd/IC conjunct a retrograde Venus/Libra (also 10th ruler).
This is an interesting case where the ruler is in fall with a benefic in domicile being combust. According to some, a planet in domicile, exaltation or in own bounds is protected or insulated from the negative influences of combustion. Sun and Venus are tightly square Saturn/Capricorn/6th (also 7th ruler) which appears not to have had any severe impact on him ("bitter and obscure" in old age is a rather minor impact for such an affliction from the out of sect malefic). Venus tightly applying a sextile to Mars/Sagittarius/5th (4th and 9th ruler) is a more favourable influence which may also signify his involvement negotiating peace (Libra) and participating in wars, at home (4th) and abroad (9th).

Example 13: Erich Rudol Bagge (Noted German scientist and university professor, he died aged 84).

Example 15: Isobel Baille (Scottish dame hailed as one of the greatest oratorio singers of the 20th century. She died aged 88 )

Fortune in Cancer, Spirit in Taurus. The Lot of Basis is in Aquarius/3rd with Mercury (ruler of 7th and 10th) ruled by Saturn/Scorpio/12th/MC/retrograde. A rare example of a 12th house MC which is 2 degrees away from Saturn essentially makes Saturn more like being in the 10th than in the 12th (Saturn is also in Joy in the 12th). In any case, accidental benefic Mercury being on the lot would have been sufficient for a strong Basis, Mercury also being tightly trine Jupiter/Gemini/7th (1st and 4th ruler).

Example 16: Eugen Bamann (German scientist, died aged 80 or 81).

Fortune and Spirit in Cancer. Lot of Basis is in Aquarius/2nd with Venus (ruler of 5th/IC and 9th). Ruler is Saturn/Sagittarius/12th with Jupiter. This is another example of how a benefic on Basis ruling favourable houses mitigates against a badly placed ruler.

To conclude my contribution to this thread (unless there are any comments/queries), I will summarise the findings of this limited study of The Lot of Basis as it pertains to specific natal charts.
I will give a brief commentary on the five points I considered when assessing the Lot of Basis.

1. Any planet(s) with the lot, the essential nature of the planet, its dignity/debility and the houses it rules.

Comment: Based on the example natal charts shown above, this appears to be the most important factor, with any planet(s) on basis able to trump the ruler for good (see for example Felix Adler, Isobel Baille and Eugen Bamann) or for ill (Amy carnevale and John Holmes are the best examples here, where the ruler of the lot was otherwise well placed).
The ruler of the 8th house on basis is especially unfavourable, closely followed by the 12th ruler and ruler of 8th from Fortune. 6th house ruler is also generally unfavourable, although to a lesser extent. Essential nature of the planet is also important especially with regard to Saturn, the greater malefic, and Jupiter, the greater benefic. Dignity of the planet on basis is also important but the most important consideration is what
house(s) do the planet(s) on basis rule.

2. The ruler of the lot, its condition (dignity, house, etc). Planet(s) in the same sign as the ruler, the houses these planets rule.

Comment: If there are no planets on the lot, then this obviously the most important factor to consider. House position of the ruler is most important. Once again 8th and 12th are most undesirable, 6th also but to a lesser extent. Other houses are O.K but in order of favourability, I would go with: 1st, 10th, 4th, 11th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 2nd, 3rd.
Good essential dignity (or at leat not in detriment/fall) is also favourable.
Planets in the same sign as the ruler are also an important consideration. For example, in the case of Jayne Mansfield who was killed in a car accident, her Basis is in Scorpio/5th ruled by Mars/Virgo/3rd. Jupiter is also in Virgo. Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th houses, the 6th house also being "the deadly place" (8th from the Taurus Lot of Fortune).

3. The ruler of the ruler of the lot.

Comment: I have only considered this point in a few of the above examples and there were two conditions where it it appeared to be of significance:
1. Where the ruler of the ruler has a tight aspect with a benefic (George W. Bush: Saturn/Cancer ruled by Moon/Libra conjunct Jupiter by 2 degrees) or a malefic (Nicole Brown Simpson: Mercury/Taurus ruled by Venus/Cancer (with Mars) opposite Saturn/Capricorn by slightly over 3 degrees).
2. Where the ruler of the ruler is 8th from the ruler (Jayne Mansfield: Mars/Virgo ruled by Mercury/Aries. Janis Joplin: Mars/Sagittarius ruled by Jupiter/Cancer).

4. Position of the ruler relative to the lot of Fortune (with Fortune, 10 signs from Fortune and 8th from Fortune are most important).

Comment: The ruler handing over to fortune or 10 signs from fortune is favourable as is 11th from Fortune. The least favourable is 8th from Fortune as this is "the deadly place".

5. Aspects within a 3 degree orb are very important, especially harsh aspects involving the malefics.

Comment: The ruler and the ruler of the rulers tight aspects are important to consider. I have not analysed aspects by whole sign although they must have some influence.

Lot of Basis and longevity projection methods
If the Lot of Basis is undermined, then the projected lifespan may not be lived out. For example, consider the natal charts of Amy Carnevale (http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Carnevale,_Amy) and James Alenson (http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Alenson%2C_James) who were both murdered at the ages of 14 and 15 respectively.
I am not aware of any longevity projection method that comes up with a lifespan anywhere near 14 or 15 years in these cases.

More generally speaking, if a long life is indicated, then the Lot of Basis is usually in agreement with this (i.e the ruler is strong and not undermined by malefic configurations), and on the contrary for short lives (e.g ruler might be in the 8th etc - see many of the examples above).

Lot of Basis and the manner of death
If the objective of the Lot of Basis is to preserve the natives life, then theoretically it should indicate the manner of death if it is associated with the 8th house, 8th from fortune (and perhaps the 4th house) as these are the houses associated with death. This is actually the case as can be seen in many of the above examples.

Is the Lot of Basis understimated?
Yes. I would argue that it is the second most important Lot to consider after the Lot of Fortune.

Case study: John F. Kennedy jr and Caroline Bessette Kennedy were killed when their light aircraft, piloted by John, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha's Vineyard. Caroline's sister was also killed in the accident.
John was 38 and Caroline was 33.

Natal chart of JFK jr: The Lot of Basis is in Pisces/7th ruled by Jupiter/Capricorn/5th with Venus (ruler of 2nd and 9th) and Saturn (also 6th ruler). Because the lot of Fortune is in Gemini, Capricorn is "the deadly place". Jupiter defers to Saturn who is opposed by Mars/Cancer (3rd and 8th ruler) by under 3 degrees. One way in which Saturn harms is by falls from heights, which in this case was a fatal airplane crash (Mars - sudden accident) into the ocean (Mars/Cancer). His wife was with him (Jupiter is 7th ruler) as was his sister in law (Venus rules 9th which is 3rd from 7th - wifes sibling). Aquarius is associated with aviation, which in John's case was his 6th house (accidents) with Moon/Aquarius ruling Mars/Cancer.

Natal chart of Caroline Bessette Kennedy: In this case, the Lot of Basis is in the Ascendant with Mars/Aquarius (ruler of 10th and 3rd) tightly conjunct a retrograde Venus (4th and 9th ruler).
Mars/Aquarius indicates a fatal aviation accident because the ruler Saturn/Pisces is in "the deadly place" (Saturn/Pisces ruling Mars/Aquarius consistent with crashing into the ocean). Although Venus does not rule the 7th of the partner, the Mars-Venus conjuntion can be taken as a general significator of her famous (Mars rules 10th and Venus rules 10th from fortune) relationship with John. Fortune/Leo/7th indicates a famous husband, but her relationship with him led her to a watery grave (Ruler is Sun/Capricorn/12th ruled by Saturn/Pisces in "the deadly place").

Two prominent U.S political figures who survived serious airplane crashes are Edward "Ted" Kennedy (Mars/Aquarius in 2nd, 8th from fortune, ruled by Saturn/Capricorn/1st, basis also in Capricorn) and George H. W. Bush (Mars/Aquarius/6th - aviation accident during military service, trine lord of Basis (in Capricorn) Saturn/Libra/2nd with Moon/Libra, 11th ruler).
John Heinz (http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Heinz,_John) was less fortunate when the airplane he was travelling in exploded midair (Fortune and Basis in Aries/2nd with a retrograde Saturn/Aries (11th and 12th ruler) ruled by Mars/Virgo/7th.

Case study 2: Two Police officers killed in the line of duty.
Charles Mehlberg (age 25) and John Machajewski (age 44) were Milwaukee cops shot to death while responding to a call about a tavern robbery (in 1981).

I was looking at my own lot of basis as well, though the ruler Mars is in the 12th house fortunately Jupiter (diurnal) is on basis and basis is tenth from fortune as well.. hopefully that undermines the negative placement.

I think his "glory" comes from the lord of exaltation positioned in the ascendant, who uncannily rules the 6th house, a fame connected to illness. Wiki says, "The extent to which Mercury's death may have enhanced Queen's popularity is not clear. In the United States, where Queen's popularity had lagged in the 1980s, sales of Queen albums went up dramatically in 1992, the year following his death.[70] In 1992 one American critic noted, "what cynics call the 'dead star' factor had come into play?Queen is in the middle of a major resurgence".[71] The movie Wayne's World, which featured "Bohemian Rhapsody", also came out in 1992. Prior to his death,

I was looking at my own lot of basis as well, though the ruler Mars is in the 12th house fortunately Jupiter (diurnal) is on basis and basis is tenth from fortune as well.. hopefully that undermines the negative placement.

Yes, I think you are fortunate to have Jupiter on Basis and Basis being 10th from fortune. What is clear from my studies, is that the essential nature of the planets involved must be considered. Jupiter, being the greater benefic, is beneficial, even if one of the houses it rules is malefic.

When I have more free time, I intend to add to this thread the natal charts of those who have been relatively fortunate in body and spirit (basis as intersection of fortune(body) and spirit), but had basis/ruler in bad condition and try to find out why this is the case (e.g other major significators strongly placed etc).

Basis must be beneath the Asc/Desc axis and so cannot be in the 8th house.
I've looked for Freddy Mercury's data on ADB but they list his data as DD, however if you have some other celebrity chart in mind, I would gladly give my opinion.

Asc + Spirit - Fortuna

OR

Asc + Fortuna - Spirit.

Whichever is the shortest arc between spirit and fortune, which must be beneath the Asc/Desc axis. Rob Schmidt has explained the distinction between the two earlier in this thread.
