Chaitra means - son of Chitra .The full moon in the month of Chaitra falls in the constellation of Chitra.

According to mythology, Lord Brahma( the creator) created the universe on this day- Chaitra Shukla pratipada and then later on added the necessary bits and pieces.

Chaitra Shukla pratipada is celebrated as the Hindu new year in many parts of India.The counting of the Samvat era and the 60 year cycle starts from this day.

Thank you, Pankajdubey, for your illuminating remarks. (I do have the Iyer translation of Brihat Samhita.) We could work with astrology for several lifetimes, and still each day we would learn something new...or remember something we read many years ago. Those with the most inquiring minds must all be astrologers!
