On August 17, 1881 Addams father died from a ruptured appendix; she was 20 years old, the profection was in the 9th, Aries, with the profected Asc at 21 Aries 33 and Mars acting as Lord of the Year. Mars is ruler of the profected Asc and profected 8th while ruling the radix 4th (father). It is in, and on the cusp of, the profected 10th (radix 6th) in partile square to the profected 1st and in opposition to the profected 4th (father).

Addams travelled over water to Europe but also spent almost two years travelling through Europe by land.

As well, directed Uranus is trine radix Mercury, the ruler of the profected Asc, and directed Neptune is opposed to radix Mercury. Directed Saturn, ruler of the profected 9th is trine radix Uranus.

2. The directed Asc is inconjunct the directed lot of Travel while directed Mars (who is changing degree), ruler of the radix Asc and the radix 9th of long journeys as well as the profected 11th (friends), is trine the Sun in the radix 3rd (travel) and square the radix lot of Travel while directed Pluto (groups) is square radix Mars. She travelled with a good number of people.

On September 18, 1889 Jane Addams, with her friend, Ellen Gates Starr, opened Hull House to provide nursery, education and other services to Chicago immigrants. She was 29 years old, the profection was in the 6th sign, Capricorn, making Saturn Lord of the Year. Saturn is in the profected 8th, possibly indicating that the settlement property was a rental and funds for the rent came through fund-raising (8th is other people's money). Saturn has significations for poverty and the house was opened to be of service (profection in 6th) to the poor of Chicago, especially women and children (Saturn with Mercury in the profected 8th ruling the profected 6th). Mars, ruler of the radix and the profected 4th (homes) is in the profected 1st conjunct the profected Asc.

This event is accompanied by very few directions but those that exist aptly describe Addams real life activities. I was not sure what lot would apply but after searching through Bonatti's Arabic Parts decided to test the lot of Truth & Good Works...it proved highly descriptive.

1. Both the directed Ascendant and the Nodal axis are critical; indicating an important new (in cardinal signs) event that will affect the life. The directed Asc/Descendant and Nodal axes fall across the radix 6th (work, service) / 12th (institutions) axis. Hull House became Jane Addams life work and her legacy.

2. Bonatti describes the the lot of Truth & Good Works as being “from Mercury to Mars” and says that if it is in good condition, “it signifies that the native...will be observant of truth, zealous in good works, and abhorrent of the opposites of these, and utility and profit result from [their] actions”. The radix lot is critical a 0 Aries in the whole sign 9th (religion), ruled and overcome by an exalted Mars in the whole sign 6th (work) trine Venus in the whole sign 1st. The part being in the radix 8th (inheritance, other people's money) connects her 9th house efforts being funded by other people's money (patrons?) while Mars in the radix 5th connects her work with children and schools, and Venus in the radix 12th connects her efforts with relief work.

3. The MC (actions) sextile to the lot at this time as the directed N. Node is critical at 0 Capricorn/Cancer across the 6th/12th axis while it trines Mercury, ruler of the profected 6th (work) and 9th and with the lot sitting in square to the nodal axis reinforces the direction of her activities; as does the sextile between directed Uranus (radical) and Neptune (dreams).

4. It is also interesting that directed Fortune is in the trine of the radix 12th while the sign (Sagittarius) of the radix Fortune 1st is on the profected 12th with Fortune itself in the profected 11th of friends (she opened the settlement house with a friend).

On May 6, 1896 Addams embarks on a trip to London to meet with other settlement and labour leaders; she then goes to Russia with Mary Rozet Smith where she meets, and is chastised by Tolstoy, for wearing a dress with “a sleeve...that contained enough material 'to make a frock for a little girl'”. Addams was 35, the profection was in the 12th, Cancer, with the Moon as the Lord of the Year. The Moon (which has significations for travel), ruler of the profected 1st and lord of the year, is in the 10th; Addams came in contact with a number of leaders (10th) during the period. Jupiter, the ruler of the profected 9th (travel) and profected 6th (work) is in the profected 1st with Venus, ruler of the radix 3rd (short trips, communications) and 10th (career).

1. Three directed planets are critical: Mercury, Mars, and Saturn and all three are active. Mars, ruler of the radix 9th (long journeys), profected 10th (career) is inconjunct Saturn, ruler of the radix 6th (work), profected 7th (partners) and 8th (other people's money). Directed Mars is trine radix Mercury, ruler of the profected 3rd (short trips), radix 11th (associates) and 2nd (money). Directed Saturn is semi-sextile radix Mercury. Its possible the trip was to raise money for her causes.

2. The only planet changing degree is the Sun, ruler of the radix Asc in and ruling the profected 2nd (money); possibly another indication the trip was taken for financial reasons. The directed 11th was square the directed Sun and conjunct the MC while the directed Sun was square the radix MC; bringing Addams into contact with those in authority or famous. The radix 11th is in Gemini which is on the 12th of institutions, relief work and those are the people she tended to meet with, other leaders in settlement work.

3. The directed 8th is conjunct the directed lot of Travel which is inconjunct the radix Sun. The 8th in the radix is in Pisces which is on the profected 9th (long journeys). Mars, radix Asc ruler, and ruler of the profected 10th is in opposition to the radix lot of Journeys by Land while the directed lot is conjunct the radix Moon (ruler of the profected 1st). Again, personal (Asc connections) travel abroad (9th) to meet with leaders (Sun) and for financial (8th) purposes connected with her career (10th) is again indicated.

On June 9, 1904 the University of Wisconsin gave Addams the first of her many honorary Doctor of Law degrees. She was 43 years old, the profection was in the 8th whole sign with the profected Asc at 21 Pisces 33 and Jupiter acting as Lord of the Year. Jupiter (LoY) rules the profected 1st and 10th (honours) and is in the profected 5th (schools) which it also rules in the radix.

The cusp of the 2nd house is at 13 Virgo 11 which is conjunct the radix Sun putting the profected Asc at 13 Virgo and making the Sun, rather than Mercury, Lord of the Year.
The Sun (honours) is in the 2nd trine the MC having to do with wealth and business and square Uranus, (the new and unexpected) in the 10th with the Moon (women, public).

Again, the inconjuncts and oppositions likely indicate there was opposition to her being given the degree; it was the first time Yale gave an honorary degree to a woman.

5. The directed 9th (higher education, in Aries in the radix) was conjunct the radix lot of Honours. Aries is on the profected 8th of possessions of others.

On December 8, 1931 Addams was the first American woman to win the Noble Peace Prize for her pacifism during WWI. She shared it with the American philosopher and president of Columbia University Nicholas Murray Butler, who supported America's entry into the war. Addams was 71 years old at the time. The profection was in the 12th whole sign, Cancer, with the profected Asc at 21 Cancer 33 and the Moon as Lord of the Year. This pretty much speaks for itself. The profection is in the 3rd and it is critical by direction and conjunct radix Venus, ruler of the profected 1st and 8th while the Sun (life) is trine the radix lot of Death and the directed 12th is in a mitigated square (with its power doubled) to the directed Moon (body) which is in the profected 7th (setting place) conjunct the profected 8th (death).

Neptune, in the radix 8th and modern ruler of Pisces (on the 8th), is changing degree.

Chart Overview

With six planets above the horizon Addams lives a largely public life with many of her activities drawing public attention and with seven planets in the eastern hemisphere she was able to shape the environment to fit to her own needs. With the majority of her planets (6) in mutable signs she was highly adaptable but with five planets in the fixed signs she had the determination to see her plans through to their end possibly as, with only one planet in a cardinal sign (Mars exalted in Capricorn) she would tend to focus on starting one project at a time rather than trying to juggle many.

With the preponderance of planets (6) in the Earth signs she was extremely practical. With both benefics in Fire in the 12th she was zealous and enthusiastic in her relief work. With Uranus the only planet in Air in the 10th she was radical in her ideas and approach to public work and with Neptune in Water in the 8th she took a visionary, idealistic approach in dealing with death, her inheritance, and other people's money.

With 5 planets in the personal houses (12, 1, 2, 3) and 4 in the public houses (8, 9, 10, 11) she spent most of her energy bringing to public attention matters that were of a personal concern to her. With only 1 planet in the companionship houses (4,5, 6, 7) very little of her energy was taken up by the concerns of others although, with that 1 planet being Mars exalted in Capricorn in the 5th conjunct the 6th and trine the Moon in the 10th, it was most likely the needs of children (Jupiter ruler of 5th in the 12th) that drove her public efforts to improve their lives.

With 4 planets in the life houses (1, 5, 9) her main concern was with life and how it was lived. With 3 planets in the wealth houses (2, 6, 10) she would take an active interest in financial and business matters and, with 2 planets in the psychic houses (4, 8, 12) she had an interest in how things worked behind the scenes. She had no planets in the houses of association (3, 7, 11) indicating she would have spent little to no energy on the concerns of others; however, with Saturn (L7) and Mercury (L11) in the 1st, she would draw others into expending their energy on what concerned her.

Her Uranus is unusual as it is not involved in any applying aspect and as such is not “joined” to any other planet. He is not “feral” as the Sun has recently separated from his square but this might just be a situation where a planet is fully “in its own light”, he is rising 82º from the Sun and so strong (although not at his full strength which the texts say is rising 60º ahead of the Sun), and his nature is not being mixed with that of any other planet. He is, therefore, essentially, fully his eccentric self. Addams is often described as having been a “progressive social reformer and activist”; with Uranus being the planet of both “reform” and “radical activism”. His strength in the world is shown by his angularity and the fact that he is disposited by Mercury angular in the 1st. That he tended to the good is most likely shown by his dispositor, Mercury, being in Virgo, his domicile and exaltation, and being in his joy in the 1st. Triplicity Rulers

The chart is nocturnal with the Moon being exalted in Taurus, in her own triplicity and in the 10th. The Moon itself rules the 1st half of life followed by Venus peregrine in Leo in the 12th with Mars exalted in Capricorn in the 5th participating; he trines the Moon but is inconjunct Venus. By all accounts the first half of her life ran comfortably and smoothly, she achieved much and was favourably recognized for her efforts. The second half was a little rougher, her peace (Venus) activism, about which she was very vocal during WWI, did not make her popular and drew a good deal of criticism which happily did not stand the test of time.

The Moon's (20 TA 08) calculated 12th part falls at 21 CP 41 conjunct Mars and the cusp of the 6th (work). By division, the Moon's 12th part falls on Capricorn, the 6th whole sign; in one sense she put her her body (Moon) and all her energy (Mars) into her work, career (6th, 10th).
