On May 24, 1984 Rock Hudson was ill in Paris where he was diagnosed with Kaposi sarcoma, a cancer that is typical of an HIV infection. He was 58 years old, the profection was in the 11th whole sign, Leo, with 1 Leo 28 on the profected Asc and the Sun as Lord of the Year. The Sun is Lord of the year and in the 4th with Saturn (ruler of the radix 4th and profected 6th and 7th) and Mars (ruler of the radix 8th profected 9th).

3. Directed Mercury is changing degree while it is square the directed Asc and radix Mercury is in the trine of the directed lot of Honours (which is also changing degree) and semi-sextile of the directed lot of Reputation (another semi-sextile that may be mitigated by antiscion signs to a conjunction). Mercury is a co-ruler (Gemini intercepted in 9th) of the radix 9th.

4. Directed Saturn is changing degree while conjunct the radix 2nd (in Libra in the radix on the profected 8th) and semi-sextile the radix 3rd (in Scorpio in the radix, on the profected 9th).

Rock Hudson appeared on the over of Life one month before he married Phyllis Gates. While the critical elements are the same along with many of the aspects, the elements changing degree and the difference in aspects is telling. Items greyed out were either missed or not considered in reviewing the related event.

The MC (career), Mercury (in profected 10th), and Saturn (in profected 9th) are all changing degree in the period covering the Life Magazine and the key indicator seems to be the activation of Mercury and the lot of Honours. A marriage lot was also changing degree during this period, its possible it is indicating he was compelled to come to a decision on marriage during the same period.

On June 6, 1985 Hudson collapsed from an acute illness; he was 59 years old, the profection was in the 12th whole sign, Virgo, with the profected Asc at 1 Virgo 28 and Mercury as Lord of the Year.

Directed Venus, ruler of the radix Asc, is changing degree while conjunct the radix Moon (body and ruler of the radix 10th) while the directed Moon is sextile radix Neptune, while directed Neptune is conjunct the directed lot of Debilitated Bodies. The directed Asc is trine radix Mercury (LoY, ruler of the profected 1st and 10th, and ruler of the radix 12th) while the directed Sun (ruler of the profected 12th) is semi-sextile directed Mercury.

3. The directed 11th (in Leo in the radix, on the profected 12th) is in opposition to directed Jupiter, ruler of the radix 6th, while being in a mitigated inconjunct (opposition) with radix Venus (radix Asc ruler).

On July 25, 1985 Rock Hudson released a public announcement, letting the world know he had AIDS. He was 59 years old, the profection was in the 12th whole sign, Virgo, with the profected Asc at 1 Virgo 28 and Mercury as Lord of the Year.
The Age Arc was 59º 41'. The aspects are essentially the same as those active when he collapsed on June 6th except for the two involving Jupiter and Venus which are no longer active. The Sun and Mercury have changed degree but continue to hold the same aspect. Mars is in a different degree but not making an aspect.

As the same elements are critical, no elements are changing degree, and the same planet (Mercury) is lord of the year the only clues to the type of event are possibly by examining the house that corresponds to the month in which the event occurred.

The time of his collapse on June 6 corresponds to the period covered by the profected 7th which runs from May 17 until June 17, with Pisces on the cusp (in the radix its on the 6th), ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter was in opposition to the directed 11th (in Leo in the radix and on the profected 12th) at the time. Jupiter was with Venus who was also changing degree. He suffered an event (a physical collapse) that conforms to events signified by the 6th/12th axis.

The time of his announcement on July 25 corresponds to the period covered by the profected 9th (publication) which runs from July 17 to August 17 with Taurus on the cusp. Directed Venus (ruler of the radix Asc) is conjunct the radix Moon while the directed Moon is square the lot of Death (which it rules) and the directed lot is semi-sextile (conjunct) radix Neptune in the profected 12th. The Moon is in the radix 3rd (news) and Venus is ruler of the radix Asc in the 4th of the end of life ruling the 9th of foreign countries and publications, Hudson was in a Paris hospital at the time he released the announcement. The event conforms to things signified by the 3rd/9th house axis.

Announcing you had AIDS in 1985 was akin to a death announcement as there was no known cure.

On August 24, 1985 Rock Hudson flew back to LA from Paris; he is 59, and the profection is still in the 12th. The Age Arc is 29º 46'. This event occurs a month after this public announcement. Again, the aspects are similar but there are a few changes.

1. Pluto, who has been critical this whole time, is now changing degree from 29 Aries to 28 Aries. Pluto is a 10th house planet in the profected 11th (friends) so perhaps, at this point in his life, his career and public persona are of less importance to him than his community of associates and friends.

2. The directed Asc is changing degree, moving into a mitigated semi-sextile (conj) radix Pluto in the profected 11th; another indication of support from his community of friends (?).

3. The directed 3rd of travel is changing degree. The radix 3rd is in Scorpio which is also on the profected 3rd. The directed 3rd was sextile radix Mars in and ruling the profected 3rd.

4. And last, the directed SAN is changing degree, moving into the square of directed Uranus, in the radix 6th of illness, the profected 7th. This is possibly indicating the open enemies (7th) he attracted when he exposed (Uranus) himself by revealing the truth of his life and illness.

On October 2, 1985 Rock Hudson died of AIDS. He was 59 years old, the profection and aspects are largely as they were a month earlier. The Age Arc is 59º 52'. 1. The directed 2nd is changing degree, moving to conjunct the radix 12th house cusp at 5 Virgo which places the directed 8th on the radix 6th house cusp (death from an illness).

2. Directed Jupiter is changing degree, moving to semi-sextile Dorotheus' directed lot of Death. The two are in antiscion signs so the semi-sextile may be mitigated to a conjunction. Jupiter rules the radix 6th (illness) and profected 7th (setting place). Hopefully Jupiter allowed him a peaceful release.

Chart Overview

Hudson has 8 planets below the horizon, an indication that much of what he does in life does not draw public attention. He has 7 planets in the Eastern hemisphere indicating he acts to shape his environment according to his own needs and is not often influenced by the actions of others.

The majority of his planets (4) are in Fixed signs indicating he can be determined and that he pays attention to details. With three planets each in the cardinal and mutable signs he can be quite active, eager to begin new projects as well as adaptable when circumstances call for it. Overall, his capacities and abilities are well balanced.

Triplicity Rulers

The chart is nocturnal with the Moon, the sect light, in Sagittarius, a fire sign, giving Jupiter, the Sun, and Saturn as his three triplicity rulers. Jupiter is strong in an angle (4th) and with the dignity of face he indicates a certain amount of quality, I think Ibn Ezra describes a planet in face as similar to a man skilled in his craft; the environment allows Jupiter to produce at least its basic significations. It is helped, as a diurnal planet, by being in the same hemisphere as the Sun although it is occidental of the Sun and in a feminine quarter and sign so it not comfortable expressing itself. Overall, the placement indicates a reasonably good start to the life.

The Sun is the 2nd triplicity ruler and it is in a middling house, the 2nd so the 2nd half of his life is apt to bring him some fame (Sun) but life overall will not be as strong or enjoyable as the first half of his life.

Saturn, the participating triplicity ruler, is sextile Jupiter and with the Sun so it attempts to help but it is burnt and peregrine so without much ability to render assistance.

12th Parts

The Moon's calculated 12th part falls at 18 Virgo, in the 12th house of sorrow, isolation and self-undoing. By division, the 12th part falls in Leo, the 11th whole sign of friends. While his life ended in an isolating illness he did receive the support of glamorous movie (Neptune in 11th) friends until the end.

Venus in Contention

Since reading Joy Usher's article A Case for Munakara: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, I've been keeping an eye out for planets in contention and it turns out Rock Hudson does have one planet in contention, Venus, a nocturnal planet disposited by a diurnal planet (Saturn) which is in turn disposited by a nocturnal planet (Mars). Joy gives the following description of Venus in contention:

“Fear of unpopularity or public rejection; a sensitivity to hostile environments; perceived or genuine attacks or personal criticism from others; unwarranted attention with sexual connotations; possible scandals; concerns about attractiveness.”

Venus is angular in the 4th so quite strong; she rules the 1st, 2nd, and 9th so the fears and sensitivities indicated will play out largely in these four areas of the life and, with Venus being closely opposed by coercive Pluto in the 10th concerns over his career may trigger the strongest reactions. The opposition in the solstice signs indicates this fear of public rejection and the possible loss of his career and income was a singular, recurring problem in his life.
