1. Directed Venus is critical while inconjunct the N.Node and sextile the radix 2nd which is in a mitigated inconjunct (opposition) to directed Mars, ruler of the radix and profected 11th (8th from 4th). The directed 2nd is also in a semi-sextile (mitigated by antiscion) with Saturn. The radix 2nd is in Capricorn which occupies the profected 8th (death) and contains Saturn (older person).

2. No elements are changing degree.

3. The directed 12th (sorrow) is trine the radix Sun (father) while the directed Sun is in opposition to the lot of the Father's Death which is in the semi-sextile of the directed Ascendant. The directed Sun is also in a mitigated square (doubled) to Mars, ruler of the derived 8th (death) from the 4th (father) in both the radix and profected chart while radix Mars is in the square of the directed lot of the Father's Death and squaring radix Saturn.

On June 15, 1992 the Andre Morton book “Diana: Her True Story” hit the bookshelves and Diana's reputation took a nosedive; she was 30 years old at the time, the profection was in the 7th whole sign, Gemini, with Mercury as the Lord of the Year. This is the same profection as the last event; Mercury rules the profected 1st and 4th, he is in the profected 1st with the Sun, ruler of the 3rd (communications).
The Age Arc was 30º 57'. The directions are almost identical to those that were active when her father died earlier in the year. The key differences are:

1. Directed Pluto is now changing degree; it's in the radix 8th (loss, “fear and anguish of the mind”) and the profected 3rd of (communications, rumours) while radix Pluto is in the mitigated square (double the power) of Mercury (LoY).

2. The directed lot of Reputation is changing degree while it is in the sextile of the directed Sun (honour) who is also in a mitigated square (double the power) of radix Mars while directed Mars opposes radix Saturn. Mars is in the profected 3rd with Pluto while Saturn is in the profected 8th, further emphasizing the connection between the two houses.

3. The directed lot of Downfall is critical and in the mitigated square (double the power) of Venus who is also critical. The lot was at 0 Capricorn at the time of her Father's death and not involved in a directed aspect.

The scandal largely revolved around Diana's cooperation (Pluto) with the books author and her affairs (Venus).

On August 28, 1996 Diana's divorce from Charles was finalized; she was 35 years old at the time, the profection was in the 12th sign, Scorpio, with the profected Asc at 18 Scorpio 24 and Mars as Lord of the Year. Mars rules the profected 1st and 6th (employees, servants) and is posited in the 10th (status).

Directed Mercury (ruler of the radix 7th, profected 8th) is moving into a critical degree while it is sextile the radix lot of Reputation which is in the square of directed Saturn and the directed lot of Reputation is sextile the directed Asc. Mercury is also in a mitigated (doubled) square with radix Mars (LoY) which is in the trine of directed Saturn while directed Mars is trine the directed lot of Property. Mercury is in the profected 8th, Mars is in the radix 8th while Saturn is critical in the radix conjunct the 2nd (Diana's money) in opposition to the 8th, he's in the profected 3rd of documents. Mars rules the radix 4th (end of the matter) and Saturn rules the profected 4th.

2. The directed MC (actions) is sextile directed Uranus who is in opposition to the lot of Inheritance (an 8th house lot).

3. The directed lot of Marriage in a Women's Chart is changing degree while in a mitigated square with radix Jupiter in the radix 2nd (money), profected 3rd (documents). The directed lot is conjunct the directed 6th (employees? Father's relatives?) and in the square of the directed N.Node indicating a critical event.

4. The directed 2nd is in a mitigated (doubled) square with directed Venus (ruler of the profected 7th) while directed Venus is inconjunct with radix Uranus (in the radix 8th, profected 10th) and a mitigated (by antiscion) inconjunct with the radix MC, with radix Venus in the sextile of directed Mars (LoY).

The divorce involved a large sum of money and a decrease in her status in the world.

On July 14, 1997 Diana was joined by Dodi Al Fayed aboard his father's yacht, by all accounts, the meeting marked the beginning of a relationship between the pair; she was 36 at the time, the profection was in the 1st with Jupiter as Lord of the Year.
Jupiter rules the profected 1st and 4th, he is posited in the 2nd with Saturn.

1. Directed Mercury is critical while it is squaring the radix N.Node and trine the radix 2nd and the directed 3rd is inconjunct radix Mercury. Mercury rules the radix 9th (travel) and 7th (partners) which it occupies. In the profected chart it rules the 10th (actions) and 7th. In square to the N.Node it indicates a critical event. The radix 2nd is on the profected 2nd and it holds Jupiter (LoY) while the radix 3rd is in Pisces which occupies the profected 4th of endings. Mercury rules the profected 10th whose directed cusp is changing degree while involved in a mitigated semi-sextile (conjunct) the directed lot of Friends. Diana had accepted (Mercury-decision) an invitation by Al Fayed to vacation on his yacht (travel); she boarded the yacht on July 11 and on July 14 she met Dodi when he joined his father.

2. Mercury is with the Sun in both the radix and profected 7th; the directed Sun is conjunct radix Venus and trine the lot of Desire which is in the square of directed Jupiter (LoY) while directed Venus is trine the directed Asc which is also sextile the directed Moon which is sextile directed Venus.

3. Directed Jupiter (LoY) is in a mitigated (by antiscion) semi-sextile (conjunct) the lot of a Male friend in a Woman's chart and square the lot of Desire.

4. Jupiter is with Saturn in the profected 2nd, it is critical but not involved in any directed aspects.

On August 31, 1997 Diana and Dodi both died in a tragic car accident in Paris; she was 36 years old. The profection was still in the 1st, the Age Arc is 36º 10'. The directions are very much the same as they were when she vacationed with Dodi, the key differences are:

1. The directed MC is no longer active although directed Mars (violence) is still square the radix MC and in a mitigated semi-sextile (conjunction) with radix Uranus (unexpected). Mars and Uranus are both in the profected 9th (travel in foreign countries) and radix 8th (death). The radix MC is in Libra which is on the profected 11th (friends). Her death was public (10th) , it took place in a foreign country (9th), and involved a friend (Dodi).

2. Directed Uranus is changing degree while it is conjunct directed Pluto and both are in opposition to the radix lot of Death. The directed SAN was square Pluto. Directed Fortune (in the radix and profected 8th) is sextile Pluto.

Her death was violent (Mars, Pluto); sudden, unexpected, and the result of human actions (Uranus). Her directed Asc was sextile the directed Moon (body, ruler of the radix and profected 8th) at the time and the directed Pluto/Uranus conjunction was in Cancer (on the radix and profected 8th).

Overview

Diana has 6 of her 10 planets above the earth so a good many of her activities receive public attention; also indicated by 4 planets in the public (8,9,10,11) houses. She also has 6 in the western hemisphere, an indication her life is shaped more by the actions of other people and her surroundings than by her own interests. With 5 planets in the Fixed signs she had a good deal of determination and paid attention to details. With 4 planets in Earth she was practical about a good number of things. She had 3 planets in each the Wealth houses (2, 6, 10) and three in the Psychic (4,8,12) houses so was mainly interested in financial matters, particularly those of her partners and what went on behind the scenes with them.

Triplicity Rulers

She was born during the day with the Sun in Cancer so her triplicity rulers are Venus, Mars and the Moon. Venus is in its domicile, Taurus, in the 5th (Good Fortune) and would rule the 1st half of her life, which would have been quite comfortable and pleasant given Venus' condition. The participating triplicity ruler, the Moon, is in Aquarius, in an overcoming square with Venus from the 2nd; possibly indicating her comfort was occasionally troubled by concerns over her own financial ability to support living her life (and that of her children) at the level she would most enjoy. The partner's finances (Moon rules the 8th) plays into any anxieties in this area of her life.

Mars rules the 2nd half of her life. Unfortunately, none of the texts give a definitive timing for when the first triplicity lord hands off to the 2nd. As a rough measure, I tend to use age 36 (give or take a few years either side) on the assumption that the motion of the fixed stars (1º for every 72 years) sets an average age. I have found that the change over is usually marked by a decisive event connected with the nature of the planet taking over.

Mars is not well situated in Diana's chart, being in the 8th. It has some dignity in Virgo, being in its own triplicity but it is with Pluto (drastic action, coercion) and with the North Node which can increase its unfortunate tendencies; the house also holds Uranus (sudden, unusual actions). Mars also rules the 4th (end of life) and the 11th (friends). It opposes the Moon, the participating triplicity indicating the second half of her life may be marked by separations, financial battles, and by drastic, unexpected events.

12th Part

The Sun's calculated 12th part is 15 Scorpio 06 which falls in her 10th conjunct the 11th. By division, it falls in Libra which is on the 10th. Her life was certainly marked by the 10th, she rose quite high.

Contention

Diana has two planets in contention:

• Mercury is diurnal in Cancer (nocturnal) with the Moon in Aquarius (diurnal) D-N-D
• Sun (diurnal) in Cancer (nocturnal) with the Moon in Aquarius (diurnal) D-N-D

Joy Usher in her Case for Munakara describes Mercury in contention as indicating the person will have to

“contend with rumours or gossip; cyber-bullying; misunderstandings or arguments; poor communication, reading or writing skills; shyness or speech impediments; suspect money activities or business failings through reading the market incorrectly; challenges in fine motor skills or movement; unresolved issues or conflict with siblings”

And the Sun in contention as indicating the person will have to deal with

“perceived or genuine attacks on the individual's opinions, integrity or reputation; constant need to defend father's actions or feeling the compulsion to justify one's own actions; weakened energy levels or enthusiasm; difficulty in setting goals and maintaining focus or achieving final successful outcome; fear of criticism, public ridicule or humiliation”

She did certainly have to deal with gossip and rumours throughout her life; I believe she was somewhat shy when she was younger. Given the constant media attention she endured and royal fish bowl she lived in it would be surprising if she did not have a “fear of criticism, public ridicule or humiliation”

That's it. The thread covers close to 40 charts and around 150 events which, I hope, is enough to convince a few readers to try the direction method out on at least a few events in their own charts although I realize it's a pain, given there is no readily available software to do the calculations.

Morinus can supply the planet pole's, most commercial software will produce a speculum and tables of ascensions can be found on astro-seek.com so it is possible to check one or two things without doing many calculations. The lots, node and SAN can be directed simply using the table of ascensions for the birth latitude; see the 77th post in this thread for an example of the calcs and the basic formulas.

I know I've committed a cardinal sin here in not doing a full chart delineation first, before looking at individual events; my main focus was on developing a rough “proof of concept”. I have studied astrology, off and on, for near on 56 years and my biggest headache has always been with trying to find a predictive technique that worked consistently across all charts; nothing is more maddening than a technique that works only some times, in one chart or another but not all charts and not at all times. If a radix chart is reasonably well timed the techniques should work regardless of the when and where of the chart.

Here, I was essentially able to apply the same technique to each of the charts in this thread and to approach their results in the same manner, looking for planets, lots, and house cusps in critical degrees, changing degrees, and partile aspects with the hope of determining if the elements indications were meaningful in connection with the event the native experienced. And this method of direction, by OA taking the element's latitude into account, does seem to provide meaningful information. But as hindsight is 20/20, it only solves part of the problem, now need to figure out: How to determine when events are most likely to happen during the life? How to determine whether the indications will be stronger based on the radix or the profected chart? How to identify which profection an event is most likely to occur in? Do the more general techniques of Firdaria, Decennials, Directing through the Bounds, etc. play into the timing? Do bound rulers or triplicity rulers play a part? Etc. Etc. Etc.

So I am going to take a crack at an in depth study of the life and chart of Queen Victoria mainly because she had a long, well documented life and so will provide an opportunity to examine a lifetime's worth of events from decade to decade, profected year to profected year. I will probably start a new thread for it; have no idea how long it will take me and only a rather vague notion, at the moment, of how to approach it other than that I want to first establish the basic condition of each planet in the radix by all the many ways outlined in the older texts and where the aspects, lots, etc. fall in both the radix and profected houses with an eye out to what is promised, when it might transpire and how things pan out.

While the techniques themselves are relatively easy to apply once grasped the real art is in divining and correctly interpreting the complex patterns they produce for as Lilly says “Life is short, art is long, experience obtained with great pain, judgment hard.” I fear a dozen or more lifetimes may not be enough...
