Age 21 1/2 – Starts a successful business, Marries

Worsdales says “At the age of twenty-one Years, and a half, the Native enetered into Business for himsself [as a hair dresser], and was successful in his Profession, according to his station in Life; he also entered into the state of Martimony near the same time.???

Profection
The profection was in Sagittarious, the 10th sign from the rising sign. The sign contains the 10th house cusp and, as no radix or directed planet is in partile aspect to the cusp, the sign ruler, Jupiter, becomes the Lord of the Year and the profected Ascendant will take on the radix Ascendant degree, 28 Sagittarious 45. Jupiter is posited in the radix 7th (marriage). He rules the 10th (career) and 1st (life). He is with Neptune and the North Node. He is harmed by a close opposition (2°) from Saturn in the 1st.

In the profected chart, Jupiter, as LoY, rules the profected Asc and the 3rd (siblings, travel), he is posited in the profected 10th (career). The position reinforces the radix rulership of the 10th so we might expect and event involving the career. There is also a possiblity of marriage as Jupiter in the 7th promises one and the man is of an age to marry.

Business Success can be seen in the directions involving the Sun. The opposition to Mars would mean he'd have to work hard to suceed (Sun) while the trine to the Lot of Vocation promises success.

The trine between the directed Asc and directed Jupiter also promises success during the year in both his personal and professional life while the opposition to the North Node indicates a turning point in the life.

His Marriage can be seen in the Venus/Mercury/Jupiter contacts. Venus and Jupiter, in themselves, promise marriage especially when connected with the 7th. In the radix, Jupiter is in the 7th and Venus is determined to it by opposition while Mercury is the ruler of the profected 7th and rules the radix Lot of Marriage.

One curious thing is the directed 3rd in the trine of the Lot of Marriage. These are both points on the ecliptic and I would not normally consider aspects between them, except, possibly, for conjunctions but in this case Mercury rules the radix 3rd which contains the Moon, the natural significator of the wife, so perhaps the contact is a valid part of the pattern indicating marriage. The MC sextile the directed 12th (profected 3rd) could also be signaling that attention should be paid to the 3rd. Just specualting here.

I'm also unsure of what is being signified by the Uranus aspects. He is in the radix 6th, the profected 8th. Possibly he is indicating the need for a loan (8th) involving work (6th). Uranus trines Saturn in the 1st in the radix, maybe in this instance the man's behaviour was unsual in some manner? Perhaps being a hair dresser in 1813 was an unusual profession for a man. Again, just speculating.

Summary

What is certain is that the period was no doubt an important and succesful one in the life as both the directed Ascendant and the ruler of the profected and radix Ascendant are involved in favourable aspects although it was likely a year that was also unusual (Uranus) and possibly difficult (Mars, Saturn, squares and oppositions) in some manner and, given the Sun / N. Node contact, a critical or turning point in the life.

Age 30 – Debilitating Illness

Worsdale tells us that Mr. White at the age of 30 years, 8 months suffered a “slow Fever, with a gradual diminution of strength??? until his eventual death.

Profection

The profection was in the 7th sign, Virgo, making Mercury Lord of the Year. Although Neptune is partile semi-sextile the cusp of the 7th, which, as it happens to also be the Ascendant degree does not change the degree of the profected Asc. There is mitigation by equal-ascension for the two signs involved (Virgo-Libra) but I'm not sure if a semi-sextile is strong enough to override Mercury as the LoY. Perhaps the directions will give provide a clue.

Mercury rules the 7th, 3rd, and 4th in the radix. The 7th, also known as the setting place and the 4th, as ruling the end of life, both have connections with death although the gentleman did not die at this time. In the profected chart Mercury rules the 1st and 10th and falls in the profected 8th; another death connection.

Directions

I've noticed that events often happen when the directed planets move from one degree to another and there are quite a few changes in this chart between the ages of 30 and 31 years and in looking more closely at when the illness actually struck, 30 years 8 months, giving an Age Arc between 30°40'-45' there are a number of degree changes.

There was alot going on during the period but looking first at the houses and planets changing degree we find the directed Asc involved in contacts with both the Lord of the Year (trine Mercury) and the radix ascendant ruler (square Jupiter) and the ruler of the radix 12th, profected 4th (mitigated semi-sextile Saturn).

Mercury is in the profected 8th and rules the profected 12th, Jupiter is in the profected 1st and rules the profected 6th. Having three elements determined to the life (dir Asc, profected and radix Asc Rulers) connected with the 8th, 12th, and 4th, all places harmful to the life, indicates the year may involve difficult health issues. We also have Neptune (who may rule or co-rule the year) semi-sextile the radix Lot of Illness without mitigation but in partile aspect to the profected cusp.

Looking at the planets that are determined to health issues in the radix (Sun, Mars, Uranus) we can see they are all active by direction with Mars in the profected 12th (ruled by Mercury, LoY) trine radix Saturn (ruler of the radix 12th), Uranus square the directed Lot of Illness, and the Sun inconjunct the Lot of Accident without mitigation (we don't know if the native had any accidents during the year, the Lot of Accident is also the Lot of Surgery so maybe that plays in somehow or perhaps its all moot as the inconjunct has no mitigation). The square of Uranus to the Lot of Illness seems the most directly relevant aspect although profected Uranus in the 11th may have taken some of the edge off the illness.

The fear of death probably resulted from the activity of Venus, ruler of the profected 8th trine radix Saturn. The directed 3rd house and Venus aspects are especially interesting as the radix 3rd cusp is in Taurus, ruled by Venus. Taurus is on the 8th in the profection.

Summary

In the end, with so much going on in the chart, the only thing that seems relatively clear is that the native will have a difficult year likely due to illness given the LoY, ascendant ruler, 6th, and 12th, contacts coupled with Mars and Uranus (both determined to the radix 6th) being active.

Age 32 – Death

According to Worsdale, Mr White “died on the 18th of April, 1825, at Noon, aged thirty-three years nearly???. He died a week before his 33rd birthday, April 18th is 358 days after his 32nd birthday.

Profection

The profection is in the 9th sign from the ascendant, Scorpio, ruled by Mars. The cusp of the radix 8th house falls at 18 Scorpio, partile incojunct the Moon in Gemini, which makes it Lord of the Year'

In the radix the Moon is in the 3rd, where she rejoices, and rules the 5th of children, pleasure. She's harmed by a strong (within 2°) square of Mars. In the profected chart she is conjunct the 8th House cusp.

Directions

There are, again, a number of directions active but I'm only going to list those that appear relevant to the event:

The 3rd house in the radix is in Gemini, which is the profected 8th, it contains the Moon, which is acting as Lord of the Year and is sitting on the profected 8th house cusp. That it is conjunct the Sun, general significator of life and in the radix 1st, profected 6th indicates possible health problems that could end in death especially as the directed 3rd is also square the radix Lot of the Killing Planet.

The directed Moon to the conjunction of radix Saturn is a classical indication of death in nearly all the texts. Add to that her importance in the profected chart as Lord of the Year and her positioning on the profected 8th and death does indeed appear to be promised in the year.

The directed Sun (life, rules the radix 6th) square radix Mercury, dispositor of the Moon and ruler of the profected 8th.

Venus is in the radix 1st and so determined to life directed to the opposition of the Lot of the Killing Planet which is also highlighted by the directed 3rd being in square to it.

Saturn is in the radix 1st and so determined to life, is directed to the opposition of the Lot of Accidents & Surgery.

Jupiter, the ruler of the radix Asc, in the 7th, afflicted by Saturn, directed to the conjunction of the North Node indicates a critical turning point in the life.

The directed Lot of Death is sitting on the radix 6th house cusp indicating the possiblity of Death from an illness.

All three first house planets (Venus, Saturn, Sun), the ruler of the radix Ascendant and the Lord of the Year are actively involved in oppositions, squares or bodily conjunctions with harmful elements.

Maiora Esse

The maiora esse Ascendant is at 18 Sagittarius in opposition to the radix Moon (18 Ge) on the cusp of the profected 8th while the maiora esse Moon (18 Ca) trines the directed 8th (18 Sc).

In the maiora esse itself, the Sun (4 Ge) is square the Lot of the Killing Planet (4 Vi) and Saturn (23 Ta) is square Pluto (23 Aq). The Sun and Saturn are both in the 1st in the radix, the 6th in the profected chart which holds the radix Lot of the Killing Planet. Pluto is in the radix 12th, profected 4th (end of life). Mercury, ruler of the Killing Planet, is trine radix Jupiter, ruler of the radix Ascendant.

Minora Esse

In the minora esse, on the day in question, the MC conjuncts radix Mars (16 Vi) ruler of the radix 8th. The Ascendant (16 Sa) opposes the Lord of the Year, the Moon (16 Ge), and Mercury (23 Ta) (ruler of the profected 8th) inconjuncts the ruler of the radix Asc, Jupiter (23 Li), in like-engirding signs. Sun (3 Ta) square the Lot of the Killing Planet (3 Le).

Summary

There are activations, at each level, of planets connected with the 1st (life), 6th (illness) and 8th (death) while the rulers (Mercury, Sun) of the two lots, Death and the Killing Planet, are both active.

The chart of Mary Dickinson born February 1st, 1798 at 3:45 AM LAT 0W33 53N00 (chart time tweaked to 3:48:06 to match Asc/MC with the chart printed in Worsdale text).

Worsdale tells us that this is the chart of a young woman who worked for a steam packet company in London. She and a few of her friends came to his house to ask him questions about their charts, in particular, Miss Dickinson wanted to know when she might marry and “whether she was likely to live happy in that state???. When Worsdale told her she would never marry she told him he was wrong, she was to be married in the spring. He said he “told her with deep regret that [he] beheld terrific Astral Causes in her Geniture, the Effects of which were fast approaching??? and that she would drown. Sadly the woman laughed off his warning and he was proven right as on January 7th, 1823 at 11:30 am the native took her first ride on a packet ship and drowned.

“[S]he had engaged to go to a Village near Boston, she went on Board the Packet, and in the act of leaning over the side of the Vessel, she was precipitated into the River…???

Worsdale put her drowning down to the following train of directions:

“[T]he Part of Fortune is the giver of Life, and it was from the Directions that point to the Body of Saturn [25y 0m], Sesequi-quadrate of Mars in Mundo [26y 6m], and Parallel of Saturn in the World [29y 11m] (he being posited in Cancer, a violent Cardinal Sign of the watery Trigon, and in the Western Angle,) that...foretold the Death of this Native by Drowning???

Profection

The event occurred when Mary as 24 years, 11 months, and 4 days old putting the profection in the 1st sign, Sagittarius. Directed Jupiter is in partile square to the Ascendant but as he is already the ruler of the Ascendant we retain the radix degree for the profection and Jupiter is Lord of the Year.

In the radix, Jupiter rules the 1st (life) and 3rd (siblings, travel) and is posited in the 4th (end of life). He is strong, being angular, but is peregrine in Aries. He is trine the Asc, Mars, and the South Node; square Saturn. While the trine is a benevolent aspect, Mars conjunction with the Asc while in and ruling the 12th (evil daimon) and 4th (end of life), made worse by his partile conjunction with the South Node, cannot be judged harmless.

Jupiter, in the profected chart is in the 5th (children, pleasure, risk) and rules the 1st (life) and 4th (end of life).

Directions
The event took place on January 7, 1823 giving an Age Arc of 24° 57' which falls between January 1 (24° 55') and Februray 1 (25°), 1823.

The three planets that change degree by direction are active by direction.

The directed Moon (general significator of the body), ruler of, and posited in, the radix 8th is conjunct Saturn, the greater malefic, posited in both the radix and profected 7th (setting place). The directed Moon is also involved in an inconjuction with the directed 3rd emphasizing travel. While the directed 12th trines Saturn; indicating the body (Moon) maybe harmed (Saturn, 12th), possibly killed (Moon, Saturn, 8th) while travelling (Moon, 3rd).

Directed Mercury (general significator of travel), determined to death by his opposition to the 8th, rulership of the 7th and the Lot of Death, is sextile directed Pluto who is also determined to the 8th by opposition but occupying the profected 3rd (travel). This tends to reinforce the above.

The directed MC is conjunct radix Uranus in the profected 10th (an indication of the native being involved in a new and unusual, public activity). Uranus also has significations for travel and is in the 9th of travel in the radix; here it could be indicating a new mode of travel for the native.

Jupiter, the Lord of the Year is active, moving to square the radix Ascendant, which he rules, and by having the directed 11th (friends, hopes) move into his opposition.

Directed Neptune (illusion) in opposition to the directed Lot of Death.

The directed Sun square the directed North Node indicates a critical period in the life.

Maiora Esse
The event took place 340 days after the 24th birthday. 340 / (365/30) = 27° 57' of motion in the maiora esse and gives the following directions:

The Sun/Moon opposition moves, in the maiora esse, to square radix Mars (forming a T-square) while radix Mars is also being conjuncted by maiora esse Neptune and while maiora esse Mercury sextiles the directed Lot of Death, maiora esse Jupiter moves to inconjuct the radix MC (in like-engirding signs Taurus-Libra).

Minora Esse
Adding 340° to the radix positions yields:

The Sun/Moon opposition in the minora esse moves so that the Moon trines directed Mars while the Sun sextiles him. Minora esse Venus moves to trine the directed Moon, while minora esse Neptune semi-sextiles directed Mars and minora esse Jupiter trines the directed Killing Planet. Minora Esse Mercury (ruler of the Lot of Death) is inconjunct the radix Moon (in like-engirding signs Capricorn-Aquarius) and sextile radix Neptune.

Summary

Again, there is a build up, a layering of contacts across the three levels of motion, in particular with the profected/radix Ascendant ruler, the Moon, ruler of the radix 8th, and the Lot of Death and/or its ruler, Mercury.

This is another chart with the 12th sign on both the 12th and 11th houses; situations thought to be beneficial prove harmful. The chart makes me think the death could have been avoided; especially given the unmitigated inconjunction between the directed 3rd and the directed Moon. The young woman chose to make the trip on the packet and to lean too far over the side of the vessel (which could well be Neptune's influence, naivety with regards to ships being safe). She could have chose differently at various points, sadly she did not.

The chart of an unknown woman born September 3, 1801 12:35 PM LAT 0W33 53N14 (Lincoln)

Extended Speculum

Worsdale says this is the chart of a “Female, Born in Lincoln??? who, according to a relative, was born on September 3, 1801 0:35 PM [12:35 PM] LAT and died of consumption on June 28, 1825 at the age of 23 years, nine months, 4 days.

Worsdale times the death to the Sun (as Hyleg) to the “Zodiacal Parallel of Mars [23y 11m]??? followed by “the semiquartiles of Mercury, and Saturn in the Zodiac, &c.??? noting that “the Sun, Moon, and Part of Fortune were all afflicted by directional Motion, at the time of the Native's Death???.

As to the type of disease he says:

“Jupiter, and Venus, govern the Lungs, and Liver, &c. And being afflicted in the Radix, and by Directional Motion likewise, they always produce incurable Diseases, and a wasting of the Flesh; hence it is obvious, that a Consumption was the original Cause of this Native's dissolution.???

He ascribes Jupiter's weakness to his cadent postion and being afflicted by “the bodies of Mercury and Saturn, in the fiery sign Leo, near Cor Leonis??? and says that the directions they were involved in around the time of death (Jupiter conjunct Mars, Venus conjunct Mercury) had “no power at any time, to give Death, but Diseases only.???

In this section he also denies the value of the “terms??? given in the old texts saying, after having “tried them all in the Calculation of several hundreds of Nativities??? he found “that there is no truth in them whatever??? but a few pages later on says “the true Terms arise from clear demonstration, they may be discovered by Calculations in every Nativity,...the fact is they are those places where the Benefics, and Malefics claim their greatest influence in the Zodiacal and Mundane Circles, and are found by adjusting the difference, as the Stars approach to, or decline from the preceding Angle at Birth???

I haven't properly tested terms in directions or Worsdale's theory so can't comment on its value; a future project awaiting...lol

Investigation
Profection
The profection is in the 12th, Scorpio, which also happens to be the rising sign. No planet, radix or directed, has a partile aspect to the cusp of the 12th house at 9 Scorpio; however, the directed Ascendant had reached that degree, should 9 Scorpio become the Profected Ascendant? If the degree of the radix Ascendant is used the chart just returns all positions to their radix position even though it is a 12th house year. I decided to test the directions against both scenarios. As the directions themselves (other than those of the Asc and MC in the maiora and minora esse's) don't change the deciding factor lay with the houses and their rulers; the profected chart with the 9 Scorpio ascendant seemed to fit nicely at all levels of direction. Mars is Lord of the Year either way.

Directions
The event occurred on June 28, 1825 giving an Age Arc of 23°50' which falls between Jun 3 and July 3.

The directed 12th reinforces the 12th house profection; its square to Mercury (ruler of radix 8th) emphasizes Mercury in the profected chart. He has gained strength by moving into the profected 10th. He continues to rule the 8th in both the radix and profected chart but where he ruled the 10th in the radix he now rules the 11th which holds Mars (LoY), now besieged in the same house by Uranus and the Sun with directed Uranus' malice increased by its conjunction with the South Node while directed Mars is conjunct radix Saturn (ruler of the profected 4th) and square the directed Moon (posited in the radix 8th).

The emphasis on the directed 3rd/9th axis falls across the 4th/10th in the profection. In the radix, Jupiter rules the Pisces 4th but the profected 4th is in Aquarius and Saturn takes over while directed Mars (LoY) conjuncts radix Saturn and the directed Moon squares radix Saturn.

Venus, who rules the 6th (illness), 7th (setting place) and 11th (good daimon) in the radix now rules the 7th and the 12th in the profection while directed Venus opposes the radix Lot of Illness across the profected 2nd/8th.

So we have the directed ruler of both the profected and radix Asc (Mars) and the three planets (Mercury, Venus, Moon) strongly determined to death by rulership and position all involved in inharmonious directions in a 12th house year.

Maiora Esse
The event takes place 298 days after the birthday, which equates to 24.49 degrees; adding 24° 29' to the radix positions yields:

Maiora esse, Venus, ruler of the profected 12th, conjunct radix Jupiter, ruler of the radix 4th while the mariora esse Mars (LoY) sextiles radix Jupiter, maiora esse Jupiter sextiles himself and maiora esse Mercury semi-sextiles radix Jupiter.

Minora Esse
Adding 298° degrees to the radix positions yields:

The minora esse Venus (ruler of the profected 12th) in opposition to the radix Ascendant, minora esse Jupiter in opposition to the maiora esse Ascendant and minora esse Saturn conjunct the radix 8th house cusp. Minora esse Neptune (a 12th house planet in the profected 1st) sextile the directed Lot of Death.

Summary

These directions at all three levels worked out a little differently here. For one thing, most of the degree changes happened earlier in the year and the only degree change to occur after the event, until the next year, is the directed Ascendant moving to 8 Scorpio, in the square of the radix Lot of Death.

Venus, ruler of the profected 12th and 7th, radix 6th, 7th, and 11th appears to be doing the heavy lifting in the maiora and minora esses; perhaps because the woman died of consumption (tuberculosis). And then there was a lot of activity with Jupiter, the radix ruler of the 4th; possibly and indication of she had an easy release at the end.

This would appear to confirm Worsdale's claim that the two planets gave the disease that killed the woman its form and possibly supports his claim about their directions only being able to bring disease, not, in this chart, death. On the primary level only Venus was active and that was by an opposition to the lot of Illness. And while both are active in the other directions it is more likely that the Moon/Mars/Saturn directions signified the actual death.

Extended Speculum

Worsdale tells us the young woman drowned on July 12, 1825 about 9:00 am at the age of 16 years, 8 months, 13 days saying:

“[T]he Directions that destroyed Life, were, when he [the Sun] descended on the Cusp of the Seventh House [16y 8m], followed by the Square of the Moon in the Zodiac [18y 4m], and also by the Rapt Parallels [of the Moon] of Mercury, Venus, and Saturn [17y 11m, 20y 10m,18y 11m]; the giver of Life [Sun] was likewise directed to the Body of Mars in Mundo, by Converse Motion [22y 5m], and by Direct Direction [body of Mars in Zodiac, Converse Direction 22y 6m?], he arrived at the Quartile of Mars in the Zodiac [22y 6m], and though the rays of Jupiter, and Venus interposed in these Motions, their feeble power was of no avail, as they were afflicted in the Radix, and were also united in the train of Mortal Directions that cuf off Life.???

Investigation
Profection
The profection was in Cancer, the 5th sign from the rising sign. It contains the cusp of the 5th house at 15 Cancer 11. The directed Ascendant is partile inconjunct the cusp so the profected Ascendant is 15 Cancer 11 instead of in the Ascendant degree of 24° 12'.

With the profected Ascendant in Cancer, the Moon becomes the Lord of the Year. In the radix she is in the 12th with Jupiter, the Asc ruler, and Pluto, the three planets move to the profected 8th.

Directions
The girl died on July 28, 1825, 257 days after her 16th birthday, which equates to an Age Arc of 16° 42' that falls between June 28 and July 28. Only one planet changes degree during that period, Jupiter, ruler of the radix Ascendant and the 9th house, posited in the radix 12th with the Moon, ruler of the profected Ascendant.

Had to take a slightly different approach here as the directions in this chart, for the time of the event, were so interconnected I had a hard time finding a way to lay them out clearly.

The directed 2nd/8th house cusps (Ta-Sc) have moved to form a T-square with the directed Lot of Death. In the profected chart these signs fall across the 5th/11th axis with the 8th house planets (Saturn, Venus, Mercury) occupying the profected 5th. The profection itself is in the 5th radix sign, Cancer, while the radix 5th house contains the radix Lot of Death which falls it in the profected 1st for the year.

Directed Mercury has come back to its radix position (this can happen when a planet has a high declination, Mercury's is 22S) and is conjunct itself. He is in the radix 8th, rules the radix 3rd and 4th and the profected 12th. He is sextile the directed Moon who rules of the profected Ascendant.

The foregoing is further reinforced in the profection by the Asc in the maiora esse being conjunct the radix Lot of Death and the Moon, lord of the profected Asc trine the Lot of Death in the minora esse. Maiora esse Mercury, ruler of Gemini (radix 3rd and 4th) on the profected 12th, has moved to inconjunct the directed Lot of Death and trine the directed 2nd with both the Moon and Mercury connecting to Ascendant elements.

The directed 3rd is conjunct the directed Lot of Accident and both are in opposition to radix Saturn in the radix 8th while Jupiter (radix Asc ruler) trines the radix 3rd. The radix 3rd and 4th is Gemini which is on the profected 12th. In the maiora esse both the Lot of Accident and Jupiter have moved into critical degrees.

In the minora esse all three of the directed elements are being reinforced with directions involving new elements: Neptune, Sun, and Uranus, all of which are involved with the North Node (implying a critical point in the life and actually occupying a critical degree in the minora esse). Note that the Sun and Uranus are conjunct in the radix at 5 Scorpio and are only 19 minutes apart by declination so they are moving together at all three levels of direction. In the radix, the two planets occupy the 7th, the setting place, in the profected chart, they occupy the 4th (end of life). The Sun rules the Lot of Death. And last, we have Pluto, a 12th house planet, adding his weight and turning critical in the minora esse.

Summary

All the elements that moved into critical degrees did so in water signs which, in the radix, occupy the 1st, 5th and 8th (usually a water sign on the Asc would fall trine to the 5th and 9th).

The one planet changing degree by primary motion was Jupiter, the Asc ruler, who moved to trine the radix 3rd whose sign, Gemini, covers the radix 4th and profected 12th. He moved into a critical degree (29 Pisces) in the maiora esse and then moved to sextile the directed Sun/Uranus conjunction in the minora esse. Given the other patterns present at the time, a negative event that could end the life was very likely.

The chart is for a young child born February 18, 1825 10AM LAT 0W33 53N14. Worsdale does not include a drawing of the chart.

Extended Speculum

Worsdale references the chart in his discussion of Mr. G.J. Ping’s chart (p168). He tells us the birth time is accurate and that he judged the child would die before her first birthday, which was, in fact, the case as the child died on August 11th, 1825

“…for both the Luminaries, and Ascendant are afflicted at the time of Birth; {at the time of her death} the Sun giver of life was applying to the Square of Saturn in the Zodiac, and also to the Body of the Moon, &c. without any assistance.???

Investigation
Profection
As the event occurred before the 1st birthday the profection is in the first; the planet house positions change when the switch is made to Equal Houses from the Ascendant.

Both the Moon and Mercury are in partile aspect with the radix Ascendant. The Moon is square from the 10th and Mercury is trine from the 9th. The Moon is in the stronger position so probably has taken over as Lord of the Year. She is with Mars who rules the Lot of Death (0 Ar), who falls in the same house, and Pluto. She rules the radix 3rd and profected 2nd.

Directions
The child died on August 11, 1825, 174 days after their birth which equates to an Age Arc of 0°29' that falls between July 18 and August 18.

The red marks elements in critical degrees.

The MC/IC and the Sun are in the critical 29th degree of their signs. The Lot of Death has moved into the critical degree, 29, in Pisces.

Only the 11th house cusp changes degree by direction. In the profection the 11th house planets have all moved to occupy the 10th house.

In the maiora esse Venus has moved into a critical degree.

In the minora esse Jupiter has moved into a critical degree.

The key direction appears to be the Moon (LoY) in opposition to the IC (end-of-life) while squaring the directed conjunction of Saturn/Asc. Both aspects are classic indicators of death in most of the old texts. The indications are the child died after a sudden (Uranus) illness although there is no way of knowing as Worsdale doesn't say how she died, only that she did.

As well, Mars is the ruler of the radix Lot of Death (0 Ar) and his square to the Lot of Illness (who he is with in the radix) is of double strength as it falls between the like-engirding signs Sagittarius-Pisces.

The role of the benefics (Venus and Jupiter) in the maiora and minora esse is interesting. Venus has turned critical in the maiora esse. She is in, and co-rules, the radix 12th (illness, disease) which also contains Saturn and she rules the radix 6th (illness, injury).and trines Uranus (who occupies the profected 8th).

Jupiter has turned critical in the minora esse; he is in the radix 4th (end-of-life) and rules the radix 7th (setting-place) and 8th (death) while opposing radix Mercury, the Ascendant ruler, and being sextile Saturn and trine Venus, both in the 12th. Jupiter also rules the radix Lot of Illness (26 Pi) which is with Mars.

So while both planets are natural benefics, in this chart their determinations make them accidental malefics.

The chart of Mr. G. J. Ping, a school teacher, born September 21, 1802 22:12 PM LAT (September 22 10:12 AM) 0W33 53N14.

Extended Speculum

Worsdale describes the chart as weak “in all its parts???:

“The Sun who is Hyleg is afflicted by the Square of Mars in the Zodiac, and Jupiter is combust, and in Quartile with that Malefic, being near the Body of Saturn; Venus is also in Square to the Moon, and in Sesquiquadrate with Mars in the Zodiac, and Mundo; so that both the Benefics, as well as the giver of Life, were violently afflicted at the time of Birth???

He details two events, a severe illness and death.

“At the Age of sixteen Years, and nine Months, this Native's Life was exposed to the greatest danger, by a severe Sickness, which continued with unabated violence, for several Weeks.???

Worsdale gives the cause as “The giver of Life [Sun] was then directed to the Body of Saturn, by Converse Motion??? [16y 7m] and says the life “was preserved??? because the Sun then moved, by rapt motion, into “the Terms of both the benefics??? (not quite sure Venus and Jupiter can share terms but then Worsdale had his own method for defining terms.)

Mr Ping died a few years later, on June 27, 1825 at the age of 22 years, 9 months and 5 days. Worsdale ascribes the timing to:

“The Sun was directed to the Parallel of Saturn, by the Rapt Motion, [22y 7m] followed by the Mundane Square of Mars [25y 0m], and Parallel of Saturn's Declination [25y 11m]...Directions of Jupiter and Venus were united in the Mortal train to the Prorogator, yet I did not regard their apparent power which could be of no avail whatsoever, though consequently, by their union, they showed the quality of Death, which must appear plain to every attentive Student in this Science.???

Worsdale uses this example to support the validity of in mundo directions. He is adamant that the birth time is correct and says:

“I defy any Man to have previously predicted the true time of his Death by any Rules, except those alone that are delivered by the immortal Ptolemy, for the Sun is certainly the giver of Life, and does not meet any violent Directions in the Zodiac at the time of his decease, and therefore if there had not been those in Mundo, of equal malefic power to have destroyed Life at the time he died, the Native would have been living, and in good Health???

Investigation
Profection
The profection is in the 5th sign from the Ascendant, Pisces. Normally Jupiter would be Lord of the Year but the directed Moon at 1 Cancer squares the radix 5th house so the Moon becomes Lord of the Year and the profected Ascendant becomes 1 Pisces.

The radix Moon is in and rules the 9th. She is sextile Mercury and Uranus in the 11th and trine Venus and Neptune in the 1st. In the profected chart, she is in the 6th sextile Mercury and Uranus in the 8th, trine Venus and Neptune in the 9th.

The event occurred when he was 16 years, 9 months old putting it roughly at 16° 45' or between May 22 and June 22 1818.

The directions pointing to an illness appear to be:

Both the directed Ascendant and directed Moon (Lord of the Year) are critical with the Moon being in the profected 6th (illness).

The directed MC is in Leo in the radix, Leo occupies the profected 6th and contains the Moon. The directed MC is semi-sextile the Sun (its ruler and general significator of life) while it squares the radix Ascendant and the directed Sun sextiles the radix Ascendant.

The threat of death is likely shown by:

The directed 8th is sextile directed Pluto. Profected Pluto occupies the 1st while radix Pluto is in the 4th (end-of-life). Directed Pluto opposes the radix Sun (general significator of life), is square to the directed Lot of Death and to the Lot of Accident. Jupiter and Pluto are in opposition in the radix chart, here their directed counterparts are averse without mitigation weakening the radix opposition (?).

Directed Neptune is semi-sextile the Lot of the Killing Planet without mitigation. He is in the radix 1st so probably adding to fear for the life.

As to why these directions did not cause his death, can only put it down to the MC/Moon trine and the powerful sextiles being strong enough to ward off the worst the squares and oppositions could throw at the young man.

Death – Age 22
Mr. Ping died on June 27, 1825 when he was 22 years old.

Profection
The profection was in the 11th sign, Virgo. No radix or directed planets aspect the 11th house cusp so the radix Ascendant degree is used for the profected Asc in Virgo. Mercury is Lord of the Year.

In the radix, Mercury is in the 11th, rules the 8th and co-rules the 10th where Virgo is intercepted.
In the profected chart he is in the 2nd and rules the 1st and 10th.

The timing yields an Age Arc of 22° 46'.

This is another chart with the 12th whole sign, Libra, covering both the 12th and 11th. Both house cusps are active by direction and Libra, in the profection, is on the 2nd which holds Mercury, Lord of the Year. Both the directed 12th and directed Mercury are strongly connected to the Sun (life) who rules the profected 12th, with Mercury in trine to the radix Lot of Accident. At the time of death, Mercury, the Sun, and the Lot of Accident in both the maiora and minora esse were involved in negative aspects. At the same time, Uranus was critical in the maiora esse and active at all three levels of direction and indicates an abrupt death.

In the profected chart Mars is in an overcoming square to the profected 1st which contains Saturn, the Sun, Jupiter, and Uranus. By direction he is inconjunct ( with the power of an opposition) Venus in the radix 1st while directed Venus is conjunct Uranus in the maiora esse and then in the minora esse you have Uranus conjunct the Lot of Death with Mars ruling the profected and radix 8th and opposing the Ascendant.

Not a pleasant set of patterns. Looks like he may have been thinking of marrying around the same time but it was delayed or put off or possibly completed but then broken off. Jupiter and Venus determined to the 7th and 1st would both promise marriage but their condition is awful, both in their detriment and being harmed by Saturn; they might grant what is promised and then withdraw it.

The chart of Miss Anne born May 4, 1803 at 7:40 AM LAT 0W01 52N59; died May 11, 1822, age 19 years 7 days. Worsdale insisted Venus was the Hyleg of this chart and not the Ascendant as some others claimed since, if that was the case, the young woman would have died at the age of 9 and not 19 years.

He calculates the following directions to Venus as the reason for her death: Venus to the Parallel of Saturn, in Mundo, by the Rapt Motion (18º 29'), Venus square Mars in the Zodiac (18º 38'), Venus to the Parallel of Saturn in the Zodiac (18º 48'), Venus to the Parallel of the Moon in the Zodiac (20º 01'); Venus to the sesquiquadrate of Saturn in the Zodiac (20º 58'); Venus to the sesquiquadrate of Saturn in Mundo, Direct Direction.

Investigation
Profection

She died shortly after her 19th birthday which puts the profection in the 8th sign from the Ascendant, Aquarius. Normally Saturn would be Lord of the Year; however, directed Pluto is partile sextile the 8th house cusp which puts the profected Ascendant at 24 Aquarius and gives control of the year to Pluto.



That puts Pluto in the 1st with the North Node, he is in the radix 10th.

The directed 3rd is trine Pluto (LoY). In the radix the third has Leo on the cusp, it falls on the profected 7th, the setting-place, which holds the South Node and Saturn, who would normally have been Lord of the Year.

Uranus is sextile Neptune with mitigation so having the power of a trine and directed Neptune is involved in an oppostion with the radix Mercury/Sun conjunction which is still conjunct by direction and has moved into the critical degree of 29 Pisces. Mercury rules the radix 4th (end-of-life) and co-rules the radix 12th, where Virgo is intercepted, in the profected chart he rules the 8th. And the directed MC has also gotten into the act, squaring Mercury.

The directed Lot of Accident is in radix Pluto's square and radix Uranus' sextile. The directed 2nd/8th axis is square to radix Uranus and falls across the profected 6th/12th and directed Uranus is sextile radix Neptune. Uranus is with the Moon (ruler of the radix Asc) in the radix 5th, the two are in the profected 8th along with Jupiter. The directed Moon is sextile the directed Lot of Death.

It looks like the conjunctions (Mercury/Sun opp Uranus/Moon) came to the fore with Mercury being the deciding factor as radix ruler of the 4th and co-ruler of the 12th and then ruling the 8th in the profected chart. While the conjunctions are inconjuct each other the aspect has the power of an opposition being in like-engirding signs (Taurus/Libra) with all four disposited by Venus who is averse (with no mitigation) to the Mercury/Sun conjunction and in opposition to the Uranus/Moon conjunction.

It's a shame Worsdale doesn't tell us how the young woman died. The involvement of the three outer planets could indicate a set of circumstances beyond her control that contrived to take her life.

The chart of the Duke of Bordeaux September 29, 1820 2:30 AM LAT 2E20 48N52. He was the last of the Bourbon line of Kings being the last male descendant of Louis XV of France.

Extended Speculum It took me quite a while to work through this chart, largely because years back, when working with the Worsdale text, I skipped it as Worsdale did not give the set of primary directions or list any life events. He did call the chart “a very remarkable one, when considered in all its parts” then gives none of the directions or events saying his “particular reasons for doing so must remain in obscurity”.

Astrodatabank (where he is listed as Henri d'Artois, Count of Chambord ) gives the Duke's date of death as August 24, 1883 and Wikimedia lists the approximate times of four other events in his life: his exile from France, his marriage and three possible ascensions to the throne of France. Out of curiosity I decided to take a look at them and I'm glad I did, the chart is quite fascinating.

The events examined are:

• August 2-9, 1830 named Henry V, King of France at age ten but never ascended the throne
• November 7, 1846 Married his cousin
• September 2, 1870 Offered the throne again
• November, 1873 Another attempt at gaining the throne
• August 24, 1883 Died at home

I start with the three attempts to ascend the throne first:

When he was almost ten years old the Duke was declared the King of France but did not officially take the throne as the ruling forces would not allow his mother and grandfather to escort him to Paris, they refused to leave him in France on his own.

Profection
The profection was in the 10th whole sign from the Ascendant, Taurus, whose domicile ruler is Venus. Radix Jupiter is partile sextile the Placidian 10th house, usurping Venus' rule and taking over as Lord of the Year. The profected Ascendant will be in 15 Taurus, the degree of Jupiter and the radix 10th, not the radix Ascendant.

In the radix, retrograde Jupiter is in, and rules, the radix 8th (inheritance) and is partile sextile the MC (10th) so he appears to be promising a rise in status (10th) via an inheritance (8th). The sextile falls in Taurus(Commanding)-Pisces(Obeying) signs so it has the strength of a trine with Jupiter in Pisces obeying the Taurean MC; Jupiter can promise an inheritance but he does not have the final say.

Venus, the domicile ruler of Taurus is peregrine in Leo, close to the Asc but in the 12th with the Lot of Vocation. Both Venus and the lot square the MC and so appear to promise difficulties (square) in any rise in status (MC) via a vocation. The pair are also inconjunct Jupiter without any mitigation; they are in an unfortunate house and Vocation's ruler is a fallen Sun in the opposition of an 8th house fallen Saturn, adding to the difficulties the native may face in gaining his birthright. In the profection, Jupiter sits on the cusp of the 11th house (friends, hopes) sextile the profected Asc. The radix 11th holds the Moon, the profected 11th holds the radix 8th house planets. Jupiter, as Lord of the Year, retains his rule over the 8th house which has Sagittarius (his other domicile) on the cusp of the profected 8th. Therefore it is reasonable to assume the year will involve events dealing with 10th house (mother, status), 8th house (death, inheritance) and 11th house (hopes, friends) concerns.

The profected chart with the directed positions in blue and green. Directed Saturn and Sun are in opposition across the 11th/5th axis, which is the axis being emphasized in the profected chart by Jupiter, LoY, in the 11th. The Sun is the radix Asc ruler, Saturn, in the radix promises a loss of inheritance and currently rules the profected 10th (status). The opposition forms a partile T-square with radix Neptune in the profected 8th (inheritance) and by direction Neptune is conjunct directed Uranus (upset) in Saturn's house (Cap) in the profected 8th. The event is the result of the native's grandfather (Charles X of France) abdicating under the threat of revolution (Uranus). Timing is possibly indicated by directed Uranus, who will temporatily move out of the conjunction with Neptune in September.

The emphasis on a loss of status and inheritance is further supported by the directed MC in the profected 12th in a mitigated inconjuction (which has the power of an opposition) with the radix Sun (5 Li) and in square to the directed Lot of Vocation (5 Le). It is also sextile the radix Moon (5 Ge) in the profected 2nd (property) in opposition to the profected 8th (inheritance).

The Moon is critical at 0 Gemini in the profected 1st. The Moon, in the radix, is the exaltation ruler of the 10th (status, mother), is in the 11th (hopes, friends), and rules the 12th (misfortune, exile). It is involved in a mitigated inconjuction (with the power of an opposition) with the radix Lot of Death while the directed Lot of Death is trine radix Venus, domicile ruler of the 10th.

It is possible his mother feared her son would be killed if he was sent to Paris on his own. The T-square involving Neptune would indicate the possibility of a deception involving the offer. Also of interest, while the Lot of Honor is active by direction the Lot of Kingship is not.
The Duke, his grandfather and mother went into exile (Saturn, 12th) on August 16th.
