ETA: - thank you too, Martin! I was going crazy every time it reset, and I didn't know zodiacal from the cat box by that point. I kept thinking I was screwing it up and the proggie was trying to unscrew it. OUCH.

Thanks, Steven, got it. The 'reset' has been driving me a bit buggy.

Do you need to reset the PD preferences every time? Because mine seem to go back to including the outer planets and all kinds of things every time I close the proggie - in other words, every time I open the PDs, I have to go back to the preferences screen for them and tell it what I want it to do.

Granted, it's easier to reset Morinus each time than to punch sin, cosine, tangent into a calculator a gazillion times to do term direction and PDs, but if I'm missing a step and could leave it 'as is' that'd be great.

Okay. I'm going to try to find that now so I don't end up with Uranian quindeciles showing up again

Then I'm going to post a step-by-step how-to on my blog with screenshots if nobody has any objections.

I had problems getting Morinus running on account of the lack of a help file (even though it is a GREAT programme!), so I wanted to write an easy-to-follow tutorial so that other folks who aren't computer-and/or-maths wizards could use it too.

You are right, this program is for the people who are not afraid of their computers but in my opinion it is not so hard to understand how the program works, you just have to play with it. First of all, download the newest version: 2.1.
First start Morinus, if you click on the Options menu and see that:
Reload is enabled, then it means that you have saved options (Morinus.opt). If you press Reload then the default options-settings will be loaded and your options-settings will be lost.
Now either you didn't have saved options at startup or you pressed Reload , you check the Options menu and see that:
Automatic Save (enabled)
Save (disabled)
Reload (disabled)
This means that you haven't changed the Options-settings. Now change something in the Options menu: e.g. in AppearanceI dialog click on Antiscia then press OK, or e.g. in The Primary Directions click Zodiacal and press OK. If you check the Options menu, you will see that
Automatic Save (enabled)
Save (enabled)
Reload (enabled)
This means that you have changed the Options-settings.
You can either Save(by clicking on Save) the changed settings or Reload(by clicking on Reload) the default settings and loose the saved one.
You have to save your options-settings every time you change the Options by clicking on Save or just once by click on Automatic Save and the program will save the options-settings immediately and automatically every time you change the options.
There are three important files:
- placedb.dat (contains the places on Earth(towns, villages ...))
- Morinus.opt (saved options-settings)
- .hor (a saved horoscope)
Close the program.
You can play with these files. e.g. move the placedb.dat file from Res directory(Res means resources) to another one(move means to copy the file to anither directory and then to delete the file in the Res directory) and then start the program and check in the Personal Data dialog the Places-button. You will see that the list of the Places is empty, beacuse the program can't find the placedb.dat, so you can create a new one. Now close the program and copy the placedb.dat back to the Res directory.
Start the program again and you will see that the Places-list is the old one again. You can also do this with the Morinus.opt file, but it is not in the Res dirctory but in the main directory of the program, and it is created the first time you saved the options-settings.
I advise you to play with the program first before doing research. It is worth it. These files can be sent e.g. as email-attachments.

I forgot to mention that if you don't save your options-settings before closing the program then next time you start the program either the default options-settings or the last-saved options-settings will be set.

I told them to hit autosave after fixing their chart options and also their primaries options. Which I hope people will understand without being terrorised - really, it's too good a proggie!

I've got the latest version, glad to know that the charts and settings can be exported, but I'm going to leave that for a different post. Writing the one tonight was enough to make my brain hurt. I wish I could have given a better explanation of primaries, as well, but I've still got Martin's book on order - it hasn't arrived yet.

Still, I've linked to your site, and mentioned that he's got the book out and linked to the sample chapter here - unfortunately amazon in my country and the US both say it's out of print. It's not, but Wessex Astrologer doesn't have a direct link to it!

Rob told me he used Kolev's notations for the program and sent me some of them. Does anyone have a complete listing of Kolev's notations. I think it would make more sense in the pd chart if you know those.
