Profected 12th – Customized
October 25, 1854 – Victory at Balaclava

The day falls in P6, Libra on the cusp with Venus (LoY) also as lord of the month in P12; however, directed Pluto (7 PI) has usurped the LoY as manager of the times by his partile semi-sextile (conjunction) with the radix 12th. Radix Pluto is at 27 AQ sextile Venus; he is in P10 with Jupiter. Venus herself is angular in the month, being in the 7th (war) from the 6th with Pluto in the 5th (risks) trine the 6th (months' 1st).

By direction, the MC (29 SA) and lot of Success (0 CP) are critical while Fortune is moving turning critical, moving from 1 AR to 0 AR.
Venus is moving from 22 AQ to semi-sextile the directed Sun at 21 PI while directed Pluto is moving from 8 PI to semi-sextile (conjunct) the radix 12th (7 AR). And the lot of Small Victory, ruled by Jupiter, is changing degree as directed Jupiter trines the radix lot.

In the maiora, Mars, Jupiter and the North Node are critical; both Mars and the Node are with Venus in the month's 7th with Jupiter trine the house.

In the minora, the 2nd and Venus are critical. The 2nd is the months 9th (foreign countries) and the cusp falls on radix Fortune at 7 GE.

April 16, 1855 – Napoleon III visit to Windsor

The day falls in P11, Pisces, with Jupiter as Lord of the Month with Pluto in P10, the month's 12th. P11 contains Saturn who rules P9 (foreign countries) and is the month's 11th (friends, allies). At the time, Victoria and Albert were concerned (12th) Napoleon III had dictatorial (Pluto) ambitions and was planning to start another war in Europe.

Directed Fortune was critical while directed Pluto was square radix Fortune and directed Jupiter (27 CP), with Pluto in the month's 12th, was sextile radix Pluto. The directed Asc was conjunct radix Pluto while sextile directed Jupiter and radix Neptune.

In the maiora, the MC (28 AQ) and the Moon (0 CA) were critical. The Moon being in the month's 3rd, ruling P3 and being with the Sun could be indicating concourse with a neighbouring (3rd) leader (Sun).

In the minora, the MC (29 SA), Sun (29 AR), and Moon (0 TA) are all critical.

Jupiter and Pluto are being emphasized and are angular in the year. Saturn is angular for the month as are Neptune and Uranus (being in the 10th from the 11th). Nothing, however, appears to trigger them in the maiora and minora unless the fact that Saturn rules the minora MC and Jupiter the minora MC plays some part.

May 8, 1855 – Distributes War Medals

The day falls in P12, Mars (LoM) ruling in P12 with Venus. The event, with Victoria handing out war medals (Mars) on the Horseguard Parade grounds is depicted in a famous water colour (Venus); Pluto (managing) with Jupiter in P10 (11th from the 12th). No other angular planets in the profected month's chart. The 12th gives indications for horses, Pluto for mass cooperation.

The directed Asc (27 PI) is changing degree, moving out of its conjunction with radix Pluto and into a mitigated semi-sextile (conjunction) with radix Venus (26 AR).

In the maiora, Pluto (26 AR) is conjunct radix Venus (missed this originally)

In the minora, the SAN is critical at 0 GE and Pluto at 26 PI is conjunct the directed Asc (missed this originally). Not sure why the SAN was critical; represents the basis of life, one's ability to rise and prosper in life so possibly indicating her being immortalized in the painting (a stretch, I know).

So in each of the foregoing 7 events the planets and houses emphasized in the profection were also emphasized, by one degree or another, in the the three levels of direction.

Profected 2nd - Custom Cusps

Victoria had two children born in a year corresponding to her Profected 2nd; her second son, Alfred, born August 6, 1844 and her fifth daughter, and last child, Beatrice, on April 14, 1857. No other events were markedly noticeable during these years. The 2nd whole sign from the Asc is Cancer, ruled by the Moon in P11, the 10th from the 2nd. The Moon is with the Sun, ruling the radix 5th (children) and Mercury (general significator of children), in the same profected house but a different sign. While I didn't make a note of this in my original analysis of either birth, radix Venus is at 26 AR, in a partile semi-sextile (conjunct) the cusp of the 2nd and during 1844 directed Mercury was at 26 PI, partile square the cusp of the 2nd, making Venus the ruler of the 2nd with Mercury as temporary ruler during 1844. In the radix, Venus rules the 6th, co-rules the 12th by Taurus' interception that house, and, by her aspect, either co-opts or shares rule of the 2nd. Mercury rules the 1st and 2nd, both having Gemini on their cusps, and co-rules the 5th by Virgo's interception in that house.

August 6, 1844 – Alfred

The day falls in P3 which runs from July 24 to August 24. P3 has Gemini on the cusp, ruled by Mercury who, by direction at 26 PI, is square the N2 Gemini cusp, trine the P1 Cancer cusp, and in opposition to the Virgo P3 cusp. Mercury acting as LoY is in the 10th (angular) in a mitigated inconjunct (opposition) to P3. Venus is on P10 and rules the radix 6th (health, illness) and Jupiter is also angular in P7 (5th from P3) and in trine to P3.

Also, by direction, the 2nd is critical at 0 GE, emphasizing the 2nd house which is acting as the profected 1st and the directed Olympiodorus lot of Children is at 26 GE conjunct the radix 2nd. Two other lots of children (albeit female children) are changing degree with one moving into the critical degree of 0 PI and the other moving to conjunct the radix Sun (ruler of the radix 5th) at 2 GE.

The directed Moon is changing degree. She is cadent in the 9th from P3 and is the general significator of motherhood.

In the maiora, Uranus (in P5) is critical

In the minora, Saturn (ruler of P6) is critical along with Valens lot of Children in a Woman's Chart

The above indicators are stronger and more clearly describe the nature of the event, childbirth, than those given by the planets I originally thought were ruling the time.

April 14, 1847 – Beatrice

The day falls in P11 which runs from March 24 to April 24. P11 has Taurus on the cusp, and Venus is LoY by her partile aspect to the radix 2nd. Venus is angular on P10 (12th from P11), in the radix she rules the 6th. In Aries, she sends her sextile to P11/the cusp of P12 and a trine to P5/the cusp of P6.

By direction, Mercury (0 PI), Uranus (29 SC) and the North Node (0 AQ) are critical. Uranus is in P5 (the month's 7th). Mercury is in P10 (the month's 12th). The nodal axis falls across P3/P9 with Mars, ruler of P5, in P9.

The directed Sun (16 PI) in P11 and ruling the radix 5th is changing degree as is the directed lot of Children (13 GE) which is moving into the trine of directed Mars (12 AQ) ruler of P5.

In the maiora, the MC (29 AQ) is critical and in the square of directed Uranus (29 SC). The Moon (0 CA) is also critical and in the trine of directed Mercury (ruler of the 5th from P11).

In the minora, the Asc (0 TA) is critical with Taurus being on P11 (month's 1st). The minora MC is conjunct the directed MC while the minora Sun (ruler of N5) is in its trine.

Profected 4th Three significant events happened during a profected 4th year:

• May 25, 1846 – birth of Princess Helena
• August 5, 1858 – re-visited Cherbourg
• January 27, 1859 – birth of her first grandchild

Mercury acts as Lord of the Year, he's in the profected 9th (foreign travel) sending a trine to the profected 1st and 5th (children). The 9th also rules grandchildren, being the 5th from the 5th.

The Profected Months

The birth of Princess Helena occurred immediately, the day after Victoria's birthday in 1846 with Mercury (LoY) acting also as Lord of the month, ruling an angle, the 1st; co-ruling the radix 5th of children and being the general significator of children.

The trip was taken when the profected month was in the 3rd (travel) with Mercury (LoY) in the 9th (foreign travel) sending his opposition to the 3rd.

The first grandchild was born when the month was in the 9th, which holds Mercury, now angular in the month's 1st and ruling the profected 1st which is the 5th from the 9th.

Birth of Princess Helena

At the time of Princess Helena's birth, the directed Sun, ruler of the radix 4th (end of matter) and 5th (children) is changing degree, moving out of a conjunction with the directed SAN. The Sun is with Mercury (LoY) in the 9th and square the profected Asc. The directed Asc was changing degrees, moving into the square of Olympiodorus' radix lot of Children, and, at the same time, moving to conjunct radix Mars in the profected 8th which is 4th from the profected 5th. Mars is in the radix 12th (seclusion) and at the same time, the directed 12th is changing degree, moving to semi-sextile directed Mercury (LoY).

The directed MC is also changing degree, moving into the sextile of directed Venus (ruling the profected 9th which holds Mecury and the Sun) and semi-sextile (mitigated conj) directed Jupiter (children); in the radix its in Aquarius which is on the profected 6th and contains Jupiter.

Olympiodorus' radix lot of Children was in the square of the directed Asc. Bonatti's directed lot of Children, female was critical at 0 GE; in the maiora it was critical at 0 CA and in the minora, Dorotheus' lot of Children, female was critical at 29 AR.

Cherbourg Trip

Directed Mercury, ruler of the radix and profected Asc, is changing degree, moving to sextile radix Neptune (travel), semi-sextile radix Pluto and conjunct the radix 11th. The radix 11th is in Aquarius which is on the profected 6th (military). [Victoria and Albert were concerned that Napoleon III was amassing arms for another war on the continent.]

Directed Pluto is changing degree, moving from a conjunction of the directed Moon into a critical degree semi-sextile the directed lot of Travel which is also critical at 0 AQ. The Moon (travel) is in the profected 9th (month's 7th) with Mercury.

In the maiora esse, Uranus is critical, the MC is square radix Mercury (Asc ruler, LoY) and Mercury is trine the directed lot of Journeys.

In the minora esse, Mars (LoM) and Jupiter are critical and the lot of Journeys by Water is conjunct the radix 7th.

Birth of 1st Grandchild

Directed Venus (LoM) was opposite the radix lot of Children in a Woman's chart (missed this in the original analysis).

Directed Saturn, ruler of the radix 9th, (5th from 5th = grandchildren) and profected 5th (children) is conjunct the directed lot of Children, female.

The directed Moon and Pluto are critical and conjunct while in trine to the radix lot of Children, female.

At the time of the first grandchild's birth, in the minora, Dorotheus' lot of Children, male was critical at 29 TA.

Not quite sure why the female children lots were active, possibly because Venus was LoM and two of the lots involve Venus as a determinate. The grandchild grew up to be William III, the last German emperor.

Three significant events happened during a 5th year profection:

• October 7, 1835 – collapsed with typhoid fever, recovered October 31
• May 3, 1848 – gave birth to her 4th daughter, Princess Louise
• June 12, 1859 – confidences betrayed by a friend

The 5th whole sign house from the radix Asc is Libra and as radix Neptune at 27 SA is partile trine the radix 5th the profected Asc is in 27 LI 04. Neptune becomes Lord of the Year, he is on the cusp of P3 and is partile sextile the profected Asc and closely square Saturn in P6. Jupiter disposits Neptune, is angular in P4 and rules P3 and P6. Mercury (ruler of the radix Asc) is angular in P7 ruling P9 and P10.

The Profected Months

The day the illness began falls in P5, September 24 to October 24; Aquarius on the cusp, ruled by Saturn who is trine P1 from P6 trine and with Mars, co-ruler of the radix 6th and Venus, ruler of the radix 6th, both averse to P1.

Princess Louise's birth falls in P12, April 24 to May 24; ruled by Venus, who becomes Lord of the Month, and is angular in the profected month, being in P6, the month's 7th (so far, I think the 6th has come up in some fashion in all the births).

The day she discovered a friend had betrayed her confidences to a newspaper reporter fell in P1, Neptune, by his aspect to the cusp, is Lord of the Year and the Month. He's in the 3rd (newspapers). Neptune's only claim to angularity is by the rulership of P1; he's succedent in the radix and cadent in the profected year and month.

Typhoid Fever

At the time, directed Saturn (LoM) was conjunct the directed lot of Debilitated Bodies.

Victoria was on holiday in Ramsgate, which is by the sea; the profection is in a 5th year profection (pleasure) and the directed 3rd (short trips) was critical at 29 GE while the lot of Travel was changing degree and Neptune (LoY) was in the profected 3rd.

The lot of Death was also critical at 29 CA and there was a fear she would die (Neptune is in the radix 8th). The directed Sun (ruler of the radix 5th), Mercury (ruler of the radix Asc), Jupiter (angular in the profected 4th) and Uranus were all changing degrees.

In the maiora, the North Node was critical at 29 AR (with Aries on the profected 6th).
In the minora, the 3rd had turned critical at 0 SA (Sagittarius is on the profected 3rd).

Birth of Princess Louise

Directed Venus (LoM) was square the radix Moon.

The directed lot of Children (male) was critical at 0 VI while the lot of Children (female) was changing degree as were the directed Asc, Sun (ruler of radix 5th), Moon, and Mars. In the maiora, the Asc was critical at 29 GE and in the minora both Mars and Jupiter were critical.

Betrayed by a Friend
Directed Neptune (2 SA), Lord of the Month, and planet of deception was opposite the radix Sun (2 GE).
The directed Moon (0 PI), directed Pluto (29 AQ) and the directed lot of Deceit (29 CP) were all critical. In the maiora, Saturn and Neptune (LoY) were critical. In the minora, the lot of Friends was critical at 0 GE.


In each instance the Lord of the Month was active by direction. Directed Neptune (LoM) was active during the illness and the betrayal but not during the childbirth; instead her directed Asc was active (maybe she had become a bit blase by the birth of a 6th child, experiencing it as more of an interruption than main event).

Profected 7th This is another profection connected with multiple notable events, there were six:
June 26, 1830 – the King William IV dies, Victoria is Queen
October 30, 1849 – ill with chicken-pox
December 2, 1849 – friend, Queen Alexandria dies
May 1, 1850 - 3rd son, Prince Arthur, is born
August 21, 1861 – trip to Ireland
December 14, 1861 – husband, Prince Albert, dies

The 7th is ruled by Jupiter, who's closest aspect (0º 45') is a separating sextile from Mars. The close connection with Mars in and ruling the 12th along with Jupiter's rulership of the 8th are indications that, even though he's the greater benefic, not all he attracts will be fortunate.

Death of King William IV

The day, June 20, falls in the first profected house (May 24 to June 24). Directed Saturn (5 PI) is square the profected Asc so takes over the management of the year, and month.

The 1st is the death of uncles and directed Saturn, ruler of the profected 1sth and radix 10th (the King, her uncle) is changing degree; Saturn is in the profected 4th (end of matter) while directed Saturn is conjunct the profected IC. At the same time, the directed lot of Death (28 CA) is in the trine of radix Saturn, maiora Saturn (0 AR) is critical, while the minora lot of Kingship (0 PI), MC (29 AQ), Sun (29 GE) and Moon (0 CA) are all critical.

Chicken-pox
In 1849 directed Uranus is conjunct the profected Asc and so takes on the management of the year. The day of the illness, October 30, falls in P6, ruled by Venus, in P5 (the 12th from the 6th). Directed Venus (0 AR) is critical, as is the lot of Death (0 LI); it's possible any illness, no matter how mild, the Queen suffered brought on a fear of death. Uranus could be indicating the unexpectedness of the disease which is usually associated with children, not adults, and can be more severe in adults. In the maiora, Mars (0 TA), co-ruler of the radix 6th was critical as was the lot of Debilitated Bodies (29 AR); in the minora, Uranus (LoY) was conjunct the profected Sun in P6.

Death of a friend, Queen Alexandria
December 2 falls in P7; directed Uranus is still conjunct the profected 1st and managing the year; he is in the radix 7th and the profected 1st (the month's 7th) . Mercury is the lord of the Month in P6 (8th from the 11th of friends).

Directed Venus (0 PI) is critical and in the month's 11th (friends) while ruling P11 and P6 while the directed lot of Death (0 LI) is critical. The directed 3rd (16 GE) is changing degree, moving from a trine of Jupiter in P3 (month's 9th). Uranus (LoY) is trine Venus. In the maiora, the 3rd (29 CA) is critical (new?), Uranus is square the directed Asc and Mars is conjunct the directed IC. In the minora, Mars (29 LI) is critical; he's co-ruler of the radix 6th (friends death) with the Asc trine radix Mars and square radix Pluto.

Birth of Prince Arthur
May 1st falls in P12 (April 24 to May 24) making Mars lord of the month; directed Uranus (5 SA) is still conjunct the P1 and managing the year. Mars is in P5 (children), it co-rules the radix 6th and P5 is the month's 6th. It trines Uranus.

Directed Venus (29 AQ) and the directed lot of Children, Male (29 LE) are both critical and opposing each other. Mars is with Venus in the profected 5th. The directed 2nd is changing degree, moving from an inconjunct of radix Uranus and to a mitigated (doubled in power) square of directed Mars (LoM). Directed Pluto is changing degree, moving out of a mitigated semi-sextile (conjunction) with radix Mars and trine with the radix lot of Children; Pluto is in P4 (end of matters).

In the maiora, Uranus (21 CP) is trine the radix lot of Children, Male while the Sun (0 CA) and MC (0 PI) are critical. In the minora, Mars (29 PI) is critical.

Trip to Ireland
The day, August 21, falls in P3 (July 24 to August 24). No directed planet aspects the profected 1st so Jupiter is the lord of the year and managing the times; he is in the 3rd of short trips; Saturn is lord of the month. Directed Saturn is in a mitigated sextile (trine) directed Neptune.

The directed 11th is conjunct the directed lot of Journeys; the radix 11th is in Aquarius which is on the profected 3rd (travel). The directed Moon, ruler of the radix 3rd and a general significator of travel, is changing degrees. Directed Mercury (ruler of radix Asc and another general significator of travel) is in opposition to the directed lot of Journey by Water.

In the maiora esse, both the lot Travel and the lot of Journeys are critical while the Moon is square the directed Asc.

In the minora esse, the Moon is conjunct the radix lot of Journeys by Water, the lot of Journeys is conjunct the directed 5th while the lot of Travel is inconjunct the 5th

Not quite sure why the Moon appears to be controlling the action; possibly because she rules the radix 3rd and is strong being conjunct the radix Asc and the profected charts Descendant.

Prince Albert's Death
December 14th falls in P7 (November 24 to December 24) with Mercury as lord of the month. The directed Sun (5 PI) is square the profected Asc and managing the year. In a woman's chart, especially a diurnal one, he represents the husband. Mercury rules the radix 2nd (8th from the 7th) and he's in the month's 12th.

In the maiora, the 3rd is critical. The radix 3rd is in Cancer, which is on the profected 8th, and the directed 3rd is conjunct the radix Sun (husband) while the directed Sun is square the radix Asc

In the minora, the Asc (29 SA) is critical while directed Mercury (radix Asc ruler) is trine the radix lot of Death and inconjunct the directed lot.

I think that will my last post on the events in Victoria's life in this thread; a number of events have been covered to test my idea that directions are primarily related to three motions (1º, 30º, 360º) tied to the zodiac which is 'fixed' in us at our birth and I've purposely stuck to using only those; however, a recent comment has got me thinking about Solar Returns.

I have previously discounted them as, to the best of my knowledge, the only support for them is a line in Dorotheus which reads “the beginning of the year is always when the Sun enters the beginning of the minute in which it was on the day of the native's nativity” (IV.1 Pingree). I've always taken this to mean each individual's “new” year begins on the day and time in which the Sun returns to its natal degree and minute each year and not that a new chart must be created each year for that day and time. I've assumed the Arabs adopted the “new” chart approach as they seemed to be primarily preoccupied with determining where the planets were in 'real-time' whereas the early Greeks were preoccupied with 'climas' (ascensional times) and happy with 'mean' times or Pythagorean numerology for any number of other measurements.

But re-thinking this has led me to the idea that

• the 3 motions I've been relying on are all based on Sun/Earth(Moon) relationships with the Sun as the main organizing principal
• transits do have effects but those effects do not appear to be ordered in any fashion viz-a-viz the radix and actual events: they may be appropriate, they may fail miserably or they may be completely absent
• a Solar Return is essentially a “transit map” described by the position of the Sun on the day and time in question so perhaps the Sun's real-motion around each year's birthday provides a localized ordering or timing mechanism in the same way the Sun orders natal charts turned by 1º, 30º, or 360º; perhaps a Solar Return syncs the 'real-time' of the personal “now” with the “now” of the internal time described by the nativity's turnings

So I am going back to Abu Ma'shar who “wrote the book” on Solar Revolutions and taking another look at how the idea might be worked into my current exploratory framework going forward.

Hi James ... thanks, curious myself It's going to take awhile, from what I can tell Abu Ma'shar uses everything but the kitchen sink for prediction, including some things I've never heard of: Lord of the Orb (profecting rulers of planetary hours, I think, have only completed a first cursory read of Dykes book and don't recall seeing this in Part II of the Schmidt translation) and directing thru the 9ths as well as the bounds. On my second, slower, read through now and I'll probably need a third, it's a big book with a lot to think about.

There is a method of using the Solar Return as a timing mechanism with the ASC 1st house starting at the Return date..say April 3rd for example and then going to 2H) May 3......3H) June 3 etc etc.

An astrologer called Val Evans uses it ostensibly to solve unsolved crimes..she has a book called ''Forensic Astrology''.

That is very similar to the so-called lesser condition or minora esse taught by ʿUmar aṭ-Ṭabarī in the 8th century, basically profecting the ascendant of the revolution at a rate of 360° over a solar year. (Abū Maʿshar mentions it as well; Ben Dykes translates the Arabic term he used for the technique as 'the small days', contrasting with 'the great days' of the ordinary annual profections.) Of course, the ascendant of the revolution will be completely different depending on whether you use tropical or sidereal parameters: the two charts would be cast not only in different zodiacs, but for different times. The Persian ʿUmar presumably used sidereal tables.
