I'd be very grateful if anyone with a copy of this book to hand could help me find the year of publication of the 1st edition, if mentioned. WorldCat doesn't seem to have it, but gives the year of the 3rd edition as 1944.

Yes, I have a 1970 copy of the book with a two page "Preface to First Edition" dated:
Bangalore 1-6-1940
B. V. Raman
1970 was the eighth edition published by Raman Publications, Bangalore.
